It was a small but competitive match today at XMG. I pushed as hard as I could with my legs, but still not fast enough to catch @ipsc_foodie.
I started off the match by accidentally flipping my safety on and hitting a bunch of Charlie’s. And I ended the match by not knowing what to do when the steel didn’t drop. I did not know the rules of calibration and if I should activate the rest of the stage or not.
Overall, it was a fantastic day. Great weather, great squad, and had a rare sighting of one of my favorite guntubers, ‪@TheHumbleMarksman‬

I just ran into the same issue at a match, hitting the safety when reloading. You didn't waste as much time as I did trying to figure out the issue. Good recovery 🤙

Thanks man. Do you have the extended safety on the cz? I just bought a flat safety after this match 😂.

@@vmanshooting nope I’m running the flat safety. Which is why I was so surprised that I engaged it.

On the topic of speed: earlier this year when you were C class, were you shooting more reactively? Then slowly started increasing the cadence until you were naturally capable of accurate predictive doubles? I’ve often subscribed to the idea of “Don’t slow down to get your hits. Speed up your processing and get accustomed to shooting at speed” But after a long time of trying to push speed at matches and training sessions in the name of progress, it feels like I’m accepting a lot of mistakes and Charlies when I could be “performing at my skill level” which would result in better execution with the trade off of slower times and less exploration Did you have any specific approach? Did you intentionally start slower than you could have and over time allowed yourself to push the gas pedal more and more? Or was it more of a natural & subconscious progression?

I don’t subscribe to the “don’t slow down” idea. I think some people hear that and they think it’s ok to go balls to the wall. I think what everyone really means is that go at a speed at which you’re uncomfortable, but still able to process some things. At the border of failure / success is where I try to stay when pushing speed during practice. That’s where I feel like I’m able to learn at the fastest rate. When I was C class, I was shooting well in practice, but nothing translated to a match because I have not learned how to program a stage plan. I was too busy thinking my way through a stage. It wasn’t until this June when I decided to work on small movements and stage execution. My shooting has improved as well, but the movement + execution is what has made the biggest difference to get me out of C/B class. I’ve always treated all matches as shooting 85-90% of my capabilities. This usually will translate to 90% points. But also it means I’m able to call all of my Deltas and Mikes. I think pushing speed is good, but only after you’re able to execute (on-demand) a match mode run. It took me several matches of experimenting with match mode to know what my baseline is. I find this really important because guys who push all the time usually have trouble pulling themselves together for that one Major that counts. Shooting is as much a mental game as it is physical so I think it’s important to train that mindset and not get used to throwing Charlies and Deltas, unless your shooting major power factor. After understanding one’s match mode speed and capabilities, I’d pick 1 thing to “push” on. For example, if you’re naturally a fast shooter but slow mover, just tell yourself to maintain shooting speed but every 1st step needs to be with aggression. Or gun needs to be up before each entry. For me, I’m still about 5-10s off of the best local shooters after 6 stages. And they aren’t physically faster or pulling the trigger faster. They are shooting sooner and more efficient with their stage plans/execution. I’m working on less confirmation, and hoping to close some of the gap that way. This is what’s worked for me and not necessarily the optimal path.

@@vmanshootingyeah I think a lot of this makes sense. After multiple matches of making the same mistakes, I’m starting to realize that it’ll probably be more beneficial for me to start shooting closer to what I’m capable of so I can still have the ability to understand what’s going wrong. I think I’ve adopted this idea of what my cadence of shooting should sound like, and if it’s slower than that then it’s somehow bad. I’ve been trying to shoot fast just for the sake of being fast. Resulting in terrible grip, flying shots, sloppy transitions, and having no idea what my hits are & why I appreciate you always replying to me! I started shooting matches in March. Miraculously my local club is holding an all classifier match next week so I’m eager to see where I place I was able to double register too so I’m planning on shooting CO conservatively/at my skill level, then LO a little wilder. Curious to see how much my HF will differ
