On the classifier I'm curious. Why did you shot the further partial first over the open closer 1 on the right?
@vmanshooting
@vmanshooting Күн бұрын
I think I was the only one to take that option. I believe it comes down to what one’s strengths are. I have a slow draw compared to the people at my level-1.2s on to an open 7y target and guarantee alphas. However, for the slightly smaller target I feel confident I can get it in 1.35s. Through my live fire testing, taking hardest to easiest targets has been better for me and I’m certain it’s because the draw time differences aren’t large enough to make up for how easy the shooting becomes.

In your opinion, what is it about steel that is more difficult, or maybe just simply different than paper? Is it as simple as "theyre usually A zone size or smaller" or is it more psychological?
@vmanshooting
@vmanshooting 2 күн бұрын
That's a good question. My belief is that it is harder both physically and psychologically. Physically because you are transitioning for 1 shot vs 2. On paper, you get 2 shots so it's naturally easier to get sucked into the target to get the hits--even if you had a slightly bad first shot it's still relatively easy to get an overall Alpha - Charlie. On steel, everyone is trying to "bump transition" off of 1 shot, which means shot calling has got to be on point. The same Charlie on paper would have been a Mike on steel, and any makeup on steel is guaranteed to be 0.4-0.8s (for me). It's hard psychologically for me now because I felt like I used to be able to see a streak sight picture and let it rip and it will hit. But lately there have been moments where I miss even though I see a steady dot. It's been a combination of zero being off, loose optic, bad trigger pulls, injuries, poor stance, and poor patience that has caused me to miss steel. The mental block is real because it's been a long time since I've hit steel like I used to. I think all of the hoser stages we have at locals lends itself to this type of sloppy shooting :(. The balance between vision focus and aggression is something I'm constantly bouncing back and forth between.

@@vmanshooting Wow. Didnt expect that much to go into it. Thanks for the detailed answer. Awesome stuff as always. And congrats again on making GMs! How much time did it take to get there? From when you started taking it seriously to achieving it?

@@petercho546 haha, I've been thinking about steel and the math behind it for a while now. wrt to my journey, I dabbled in USPSA for several matches and it landed me in C class. I was C class for 2 years because I took a year off (had a kid) and when I did shoot, I did not train hard. It wasn't until June 2023 that I trained effectively. My kids had reached an age where I felt less guilty about leaving the house for several hours. And the main difference from before was I went to matches 2x a month. That gave me data points (stat sheet and video) that tailored my training to focus on my biggest areas of improvement. I stopped working on reloads and draws. I started working on entering into positions, on transitioning faster, on knowing how fast I *could* shoot on the move, on small aggressive movements, etc. I iterated on them every single match, while trying to keep my score respectable (no hero or zero mentality). Later on, when I felt like what was holding me back from classing up was my gun manipulation (Oct 2023) I really focused on it for about 2 months. But the main takeaway is the process of gathering data, retrospecting, training, and moving on to the next topic. When are you shooting a match?

@@vmanshooting Hey congrats on the kid and good on you for taking care of your responsibilities. At the moment I'm busy with school for a job, and don't have any plans for competition shooting. With the way things are going as well, not sure how much money i should be spending on shooting instead of food and water and the stock market. I'm always asking myself if I should go to the range and the answer is always "no you'd get 10 times more value through dry fire" lol. Reaching the heights of shooting is definitely a desireable achievement, someday, but there's no way I can have it as my priority. Combined with the fact that I'm complacent with my performance, as my main goal from the start was to at least be able to protect myself and others and not accidentally shoot a good guy, while nobody is ever actually "ready" for something like that, I can carry with confidence. I completely agree with your mentality and process as well.

it’s just speed practice. making sure you’re accurately hitting targets while moving fast and training trigger discipline with the white targets. yes impractical for fighting, but that’s not why he’s doing this. it’s literally just an advanced target practice
