The Prequels are not good. But they're fascinating in how they try to be. Today on Quinton Reviews, we discuss George Lucas' most infamous creation, and how they prove to be the most interesting commentary on War in the entire Star Wars saga (if you skip past all the Jar Jar scenes). Enjoy!

But anyway, have you checked out the entire site about the Darth Jar Jar theory or watched the KZfaq video that covers it? You should check it out in its totality. It's quite compelling. The main things that stuck out to me is the unique name Lucas gave him and the extremely unusual reaction that the Gungans had towards him when he returned to the Gungan city with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. He said that those reactions were from being clumsy and to me that just doesn't add up. Compare to a character that Binks has an almost same name to (Bink, a magician from Xanth book series) and the coincidences get weird.

Not to defend the actual line about sand but I think the subtext was that sand reminded him of his mother and life as a childslave. It also made him feel guilty for leaving his mother behind. When he takes the sand at her grave (never knew he did that, good catch!) it signifies him believing he is to blame for his mother's death. Or maybe not, idk. Maybe Lucas just thought it rhymed.

The sand is definitely a metaphor for Anakin's childhood. By saying he hates it, he's denying any emotional attachment to his mother and his home planet. The vision of his mother and her death brings those suppressed feelings flooding back, along with his failure to free her from slavery and save her life. By taking a fistful of sand from her grave he is basically swearing never to forget his roots, and never to fail again.

Have anyone else thought about the fact that clone troopers are genetically modified to age twice as fast as regular humans so that they can be put in the field quicker, so for example a 20 year old looking clone is actually 10, so therefor not only does the republic have an army of slaves, but an army of under aged slaves.
@Bigred073

Because human standards of age are irrelevant in a society consisting of differing species that age at different rates. By that logic, "Baby Yoda" could be classed as a senior citizen even though within his species, which ages over 9x that of humans, he's still an infant/toddler.

@@paulbutkovich6103 Well they don't seem like they are as independent as the clones. While the clones are programed to follow some orders no matter what like Order 66 they can still question other ones, for example in the Umbara arc in clone wars (spoilers if you haven't seen it) some of the clones actually questioned general Krell while if they were battle droids they would just blindly follow him. So even if the battle droids were sentient they don't have the same amount of free will. If that makes it more ethical I'm not sure.

I interpret the song from Episode 1 is called “Duel Of The Fates” because Qui-Gon, Obiwan and Darth Maul were ultimately fighting for Anakin’s fate. If Anakin were trained by Qui-Gon, he probably wouldn’t have become Darth Vader. Qui-Gon was an unconventional Jedi who questioned the dogma, which was why he wasn’t on the council. If Qui Gon trained Anakin in his own way, Anakin would be able to become the great Jedi he was idealized to be in A New Hope. Of course, Qui-Gon was killed in the fight, and Obiwan became Anakin’s master. Obiwan drilled the Jedi’s orthodox teachings into Anakin for years, crippling him emotionally.

I think it has more to do with Obiwan's inexperience. His master died before he became a knight and he immediately jumps into training Anakin. That's kinda like a teacher's assistant trying to teach Stephen Hawking. Qui-Gon had more experience, not only as a Jedi, but training other Jedi. Being taught to control your emotions when you're constantly frustrated with your teacher is one hell of feedback loop.

This is probably the best thematic look at the Prequel Trilogy I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait until the next video, but please don’t push yourself too hard. And remember: The Clones are slave soldiers bred and conditioned into blind patriotism and subservience to an imperialist state. The Republic is the biggest buyer of slave labor in the galaxy.
@midshipman8654
@midshipman8654 4 жыл бұрын
snuggling with depression idk, I feel like a lot of the slightly in depth looks into the morality of things in Star Wars come out pessimistic, but if you look a bit further then it doesn’t become so black and white with “the Jedi/republic are evil”. For instance, with your example of clones being slave labour, does that come into play if they were created for a specific purpose and their “nature” or sense of right was specifically talloired to be something, ie fighting a war? That goes into the nature of man and all, is the republic employing them any more employing “slave labor” than we as humans are slave to our desires? If they were implanted with these imperatives before birth, I don’t think you could argue that it is strictly wrong. That’s the sense that I got from the prequels proper and most of the clone wars. Clones are not fully human in the sense of natural law since their natural law was tailor made for them. If a golf ball machines one imparitive is to create golf balls, is it being told to create golf balls making it a slave in amorally negative context? I think this is more muddled in the tv series were we see clones as actual characters which gives them a more human bent. On the point of the Jedi, I see very little wrong with their philosophy from an internally morally consistent stance. The practicality of it can definitely be questioned from Naboo and back, but they follow a moral imparitive in the sense that the only good is the intent of goodness. Unless of course you can jump the is ought gap.

@@midshipman8654 Okay, only going after one point since you had talked about a fair bit, but; 'With your example of clones being slave labour, does that come into play if they were created for a specific purpose and their "nature" or sense of right was specifically talloired to be something, ie fighting a war?' Yes, completely yes. It isn't even an argument, it's as simple as asking if the child of a slave who was born already enslaved and raised thinking that their entire life was just to work for their master is a slave or not. A slave isn't defined by details such as personal belief, but rather by their position, and it doesn't matter if you are born into the situation or not, it is still slavery.
@midshipman8654
@midshipman8654 4 жыл бұрын
TamaraBloodhoof well, yes, but the defining difference between the traditional notion of a slave and the clones, is that a slave, or humans in general, are not purpose built, or in other words it is not necessarily their nature to be a slave. Is an ant a slave because it is compelled to work or even die for the colony? That might be a little insulting of a comparison, so maybe the example of an AI is better. If an AI has a prime directive, say making golf balls, even if it is sentient and sapient and has reason that meets or even exceeds our own, it would have no Reason to not keep making golf balls. Self preservation is not an ends in itself, nor is gaining power. It may attempt to get those things as a means, but the ends remains making golf balls regardless. Humans do not have a singular prime directive, but a variety of wants and desires that’s why enforcing one on someone is considered wrong (unless you want to go into spiritual justification a la John Locke). If your desires are purpose made can that be called slavery any more than slavery to hunger or thirst, or want of companionship? Or is it just because they are human derived that the clone army was unpalatable. Would it make a difference if they were reptilian or robotic? From what I’ve seen clones by and large follow the ant model with near human level capacities, but for them, the hive is the republic. It’s a difficult subject matter to be sure, but I don’t think you can out and oUt describe it as bad. Definitely dubious though.
@TamaraBloodhoof
@TamaraBloodhoof 4 жыл бұрын
@@midshipman8654 It IS bad, mainly because they are sapient humans. An ant isn't a slave because of the mindset of a different type of creature. A robot who is only a program, not A.I. or arguably V.I., can't be a slave as they wouldn't have the capability of actually rationalizing about their position. The Clones however CAN think, are shown to have thoughts and emotions in many cases, but are instead indoctrinated and brainwashed. If we didn't have characters show that the clones were more than just biological computers, then you are correct that it is speculative, but since we have been shown this, it is slavery of a bent they can't recognize themselves.
@TamaraBloodhoof
@TamaraBloodhoof 4 жыл бұрын
@@midshipman8654 What makes it unpalatable, to use your words, is they are sapient. I would feel similarly for an A.I., and again as we have seen the clones are not just a hivemind, instead having personalities that differ enough to show them as individuals in many instances. You can argue about whether it is justified that they remain as slaves, but their position is one of forced servitude if they decide against the directive they are given.

In fact, it was actually a bit of a whoopsie, because they thought based on the white outfit, he was probably an Admiral. But see, people checked out his rank based on the stripes on his chest (yes, they actually mean something, crazy, right?) and it turned out he was a Colonel. So then a bunch of canon had to get twisted in to explain why Yularen went from commanding whole fleets in the Clone Wars to a lowly Colonel in the Empire.

I think there's a misunderstanding across the fandom about what the Jedi philosophy regarding emotions is supposed to be. To me, it appears quite similar to Buddhism in that the goal is not to completely shut off all your emotions, but to not allow yourself to be swallowed by them. So feel your emotions, but let them go after. Work to get through them so you aren't driven by them to the detriment of yourself and those around you. Anakin's failing wasn't in listening to the Jedi and shutting off his empathy in response to their teaching. It was his unregulated emotions that led him to genocide, child murder, and joining the Sith. Yoda wasn't telling Anakin not to care, he was telling Anakin to accept the things that are out of his control. Death is a natural part of life and will come for us all someday. If you spend your life terrified of losing your loved ones, you will likely act in ways that are not good for you or the people around you. For a milder, real world example - say you're terrified of your wife leaving you for someone else. Maybe it's happened to you before or maybe you just feel you're not good enough for her. If you allow this fear to constantly occupy your mind, you might start getting overly jealous of her spending time with male friends. So you get controlling. You try to stop her from hanging around with those people, you interrogate her about where she is, who she's with, what she's doing. You destroy your relationship (and your own moral character) because you're scared. Most people feel like there's someone they absolutely cannot live without. But that's not true. Friends/family are necessary for a happy life, but one specific person is not. Life will go on after your father dies or you break up with your partner or your child leaves home. "Letting go of attachment" in the Jedi sense is about understanding that. The Jedi failed Anakin not because their core philosophy was flawed, but because he wasn't given enough guidance in how to actually get through the intense emotions he was feeling. And also because the life of a monk in a judgemental, corrupt organization was probably just not suited to the poor guy. Oh, and Yoda didn't say that about Rey because she understood the core of their teachings and he decided they could just discard all the ancient wisdom. He said it because she stole all the books before the place was destroyed. Rey had everything that was in there with her literally, not figuratively 😂
@o0Evo0o
@o0Evo0o 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say the Jedi "didn't give enough guidance"- he is fully aware that he's "not acting as a Jedi Should" and "not the Jedi [he] should be" etc, and has no problem explaining the concepts to other people- eg Padme ("compassion" vs "love"), Ahsoka (throughout the cartoon), Rex (re: Echo in s7). The problem is his reluctance to address his own fears- he gets defensive and deflects. And that's something the council saw immediately- the scene where they're testing him, they ask "how do you feel", he says "cold", they keep probing and get to his fear for his mother, and he gets defensive and goes "what's THAT got to do with anything??" Basically, they can't help him until he admits he has a problem, and Palpatine's on his other shoulder telling him he doesn't have any problems and nothings wrong with him.
@spaceocean2530
@spaceocean2530 Жыл бұрын
Mmmm, but Anakin could have helped his mother. He had the visions before she was kidnapped. Shimi had an absolutely excruciating life and death. Anakin could have aided her, but since the jedi were so negative when it came to his unavoidable attachment to her, they told Anakin to forget his visons. To make peace with them. But thats stupid, if it is in your power to help someone then you should do it. Its canon that the Jedi even kept her letters to him. Shimi and Anakin didn't deserve that. It highlights how the Jedi were really inactive when it came to the plight of many defenseless people, and only helped politicians, planets that gave them power in the war and the wealthy. They may have not have been aware of it, but thats what ended up happening. It's also why so many normal citizens didn't really care that much when they were wiped out.
@Killzoneguy117
@Killzoneguy117 Жыл бұрын
Its a failing from all sides. The fault in the Jedi I think is that they created a culture that was so rigid that Anakin could not air these worries out. If he's going to be expelled for having a wife, obviously he isn't going to tell the Jedi Masters his worries about losing Padme, and thus they cannot help him navigate those worries. The core philosophy was fine. The problem was how the Jedi interpreted and implemented that philosophy.

@@user-xx6vy9ri8p I'd have to disagree heavily. All three movies had subpar acting but still picked up a bit after each installment and even then it still dragged the movies down greatly. Looking behind the scenes, the films are incredibly interesting considering Palpatine's 4d chess manipulation, the role of the senate/industry/corruption and how it all quietly happened while the "Republic" was being molded into the Empire. Not to mention the wonderful job The Clone Wars does on even further expanding upon the story of the prequel trilogy. With that being said, the prequels (including The Clone Wars) is still my favourite period of Star Wars and will always be due to the immense wealth of "filler" or sub-plots that are hidden in plain sight and only give me further pleasure upon re-watching the movies.

The prequel trilogy might have crappy writing, but it draws quite a bit of value from the original trilogy things it sets up retroactively. Dooku's conversation with Obi-Wan isn't as straightforward as that. Remember that he is a former Jedi Master who left the order because he was frustrated by the Republic's corruption. He wanted the Jedi to take an active role in what he saw as upholding justice. We have every reason to believe that Dooku - like most Sith - intended to betray his master. I believe that the conversation with Obi-Wan was an attempt to recruit his own apprentice and overthrow Sidious. He is not the kind of person that would approve of a fascist dictatorship, dark side or not. You could even make the argument that his plea with Obi-Wan was as much a chance for him to redeem himself to the light side as it was to corrupt Obi-Wan to the dark side. Lucas didn't spend enough time on him to unpack it all, but Dooku is a fascinating character with a complex background.
@LordJagd
@LordJagd 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe this doesn’t relate, since you point out that Dooku isn’t much of a sith (more of a fallen Jedi) but the “rule of two” seems like it would apply. You don't have to be sorry. Americans are possesed with originals, and unironically believe, that everything other than OT is shit, because its not like OT. Luke didnt had any reaction to his uncle and aunt dying, yet people use Anakin's line about sand as an example of "bad acting and writing". 50% of the stuff in ESB wasnt relevant to the story, yet people consider that movie to be perfect. Luke had a cringey, whiny "Noooo" in that same movie, yet people make fun of Vader's "Noooo". OT was a simple, cliched story of "good guys defeat the bad guys with the power of plot armor", while prequels had a brilliant story of a Palpatine's rise and Anakin's fall, but "originals had good story and prequels have bad story, because I said so". Americans really believe, that their filmmaking is the best, but for the rest of the world american movies are popcorn flicks at best. They are hypocrits. Love whatever you want.

22:00 - Re: Yoda tells Luke to give up his attachments and Luke says "mm nah" This is one of the things that rubs me the wrong way about the sequel trilogy regarding Luke and Leia in particular - none of the movies understands the ramifications of Luke choosing his friends in ESB and RoTJ over Jedi traditions. The idea that Leia will go on to not be a Jedi because her having a family and being a Jedi are incompatible is specifically the kind of choice Luke JUST decided wasn't necessary to make. (Also it's p sexist not gonna lie) Also the way Luke treated Kylo/trained the other Jedi seems to be in keeping with the traditions which, again, Luke rejected in the previous two movies. Luke saying "I am a Jedi like my father before me" is not Luke embracing all of the Jedi teachings but rather recontextualizing what being a Jedi means, and in the context of the scene is an act of mercy towards Vader, and is literally Luke choosing a familial/emotional attachment. So the idea that Luke would go on to make a Jedi school where he teaches the same exact shit the Jedi were teaching in the prequels that created Vader is blah and I hate it. Worst possible conclusion to have taken. OK the worst possible conclusion was the part with Sheev Palpatine. But it's still pretty up there!

And whats more, i do hope that the upcoming clone wars tv show, gets into ep 3 and changes some of the stuff there, not changing what happens, but giving more motivations, because after all the depth that the show gave Anakin, i still cant believe that he would join palpatine like that while knowing obi Wan and ashoka, plus others of his jedi friends are out there

This is a pretty minor point about the history at the start of the video, but the common consensus about the start of the Vietnam War really had more to do with building a defensive alliance with future NATO member France (which was the colonial power over Vietnam) and the belief that the whole of South East Asia would fall to Soviet Union military bloc after the creation of a communist Vietnam rather than economic conflicts in Vietnam. Both of these reasons were horrifyingly short-sighted and cruel of course with Ho Chi Minh actively writing letters to Truman offering him an alliance with the new communist power (turns out the Vietnamese were just as afraid of Soviet/Chinese Imperialism) and the Domino Theory being one of the most absurd pieces of Washington Pseudo Science in recent history. Most of this info is described well in the Ken Burns documentary, but if you have a good source for the economic motivations of the U.S invasion I'd more than happy to read that and change my perception.....Oh yeah the Star Wars bits were pretty good too.

The Jedi Order maintained peace for one thousand years before the coming of Darth Plagueis and the Palpatine. The Jedi were peacekeepers and never challenged the galactic senate. Blaming them for the fall of the empire is just stupid.

The whole system was flawed. Multiple groups can be blamed for the fall of a system. The Senate was so fundamentally broken in a way that kept the civil war going. The Jedi were fundamentally broken in a way that sowed the seeds of tension (not actually fixing issues just "keeping order"), doomed Anakin (bad teaching about emotion) and meant they would fight for the sith (no though or consideration for why they were fighting).

Isn't the point of Yoda's "nothing she doesn't have" line that she literally took the books? They're in the falcon later on

Riley Wilson Star Wars fans reading deeper into the subtext beyond the surface level information? You fool. You absolute bafoon. Why would we do that when we can just read a clinical overview of lore on Wookiepedia?

i agree with you on the lightsabers as propellers being the peak of the franchise, there legit is no topping that. also, i'm just here to say, i always loved the prequels and have never given them grief for telling the story they committed to tell.
