In this lesson, you will learn how to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to problems in the xy coordinate plane. We need to apply the pythagorean theorem, which is c^2 = a^2 + b^2. To do this, we look at the points in the plane and subtract the y-coordinates and subtract the x-coordinates to find the values of a and b in the equation, the use the pythagorean theorem to find the straight line distance between the two points.

Pythagorean theorem is so vital that it pops up often in maths. It helps not only to compute the distances that we can't measure actually but also evaluating periodic functions.

The formula is also used as part of the equation in a rocket launch plotting altitude / speed / thrust etc.

This equation is based on proportionality concept. If y is proportional to x i.e y = Kx =A/Bx, where B is change in x value and A is corresponding change in y value. C represents the vertical shift.
