An early live performance of Song for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age from the 2001 Bizarre festival.
This version is different than what eventually ended up on the Songs for the Deaf album in 2002. Its most prominent differences include alternate lyrics and it features Mark Lanegan on lead vocals.

Why are people always complaining about the way Lanegan "performs on stage", yeah he stands still, but with a voice like that, he has the fuckin right to do whatever he pleases!!!!

Alfredo Hernandez was their first drummer. Dave was their fourth and was the seventh drummer in Nirvana. This is Gene Troutman, their second drummer. And Josh was in the Trees well before Mark ended up in QOTSA. He was supposed to be on the first record but he was obligated to something else.

What I got from ear, please take it with a grain of salt It's a new song, called song for the deaf Livin' underground Here against the track Can I trace the sound? Earth up to my neck Kill... Killin' Time Rot, right on the vine Prey... Pray and hiss Oh, wouldn't ya mind? I've lost If I crave for what's left Ready now Hold behind, that's where I see If it wasn't for what was now what to be If it were the words that hold up together Words be fallin' all around Jump down, jump down, yeah Jump down, jump down, yeah Silence shatters, just do your shtick I've lost If I crave for what's left If not love If not, I crave for what's left For the deaf I can take a walk Right beside the ditch This halo round my neck 's tearin' out ev'ry stitch Kill... Killin' Time Rot, right on the vine Rot, right on the vine Prey... Pray and hiss Oh, wouldn't ya mind? I've lost If not, I crave for what's left If not, love If not, I crave for what's left For the deaf

I think it's awesome that Queens get the success and recognition they do, but I totally agree and miss this era of the band so badly. At one point, QOTSA were hands down the best rock and roll band in the whole fucking world. They didn't need gimmicky sounds like making their guitars sound like shit (era vulgaris) or 3 guitarists with a million effects and multiple dudes playing keyboards. They could just fucking kill it with bass drums and a couple guitars. No "dark" dance music. Just a bunch of swaggering Rock songs by dudes who were still trying to prove themselves with some great songs. The performances felt vital and everything new that they did genuinely broke new ground. They've grown, and they're not those red eyed dudes going for fucking broke. Now a large contingency of their fans weren't out of their diapers when I discovered them. The dangerous, fucked up, drugged out Queens of old would terrify them and they don't wanna know about anything before MTV played the Little Sister video. I'd rather it be Queens than some other lowest common denominator bull shit, and I am happy for them (Josh and hired hands) but I can't help but think Walkin On the Sidewalks or You Can't Quit Me Baby with Nick and Josh and some honest to god dudes from the desert (Gene, Alfredo, etc) will always trump whatever artistic, gothic dance rock with 10 people playing on it they will put out next.

+Justin Vavala You've gotta admit though, their new live shit Is amazing. Love it or hate it, it's still a great show. And the fact they're going all out for what they create just means they've moved on from your personal taste.. Not that they've wimped out, or that they'd give a damn wether they'd been "Trumped". I'd be willing to bet if today's QOTSA did Songs For The Deaf live they'd do justice to it.

+Justin Vavala each era was special. you can't expect a married 42 year old with 2 kids to keep writing songs like feel good hit or quick and to the pointless. i like the st-sftd eras for what they are, and i like lullabies-lc eras for what they are.

My advice, when you have the flu, wait til it's nearly all but gone, you'll still have a bit of gunk in the back of your throat and it makes your voice go a bit croaky, but singing this makes you sound like your grinding your vocal chords. That's the guide how to get Lanegans Voice :)
