In this video we're looking at a question from a viewer on Resistance and Resistivity. It's a great question because it combines electrical principles looked at in other videos with practical areas of electrical installation work such as cable length and volt drop.
These videos are aimed at learners studying electricity on any course and will help those studying the City and Guilds 2365, 5357 Apprenticeship, 7202 and 8202 courses as well as the EAL Diploma in Electrical Installation.

Joe, your explanation is just brilliant. Thank you very much for all your efforts here. The only thing which is disappointing me is, KZfaq - it doesn’t allow me to give you thousands of likes😊. You deserve it

So in a real-life situation, in a domestic house, it would be a parallel circuit to the actual socket from the consumers unit. . And then from the socket to the machine which is supplied by a 16mm aluminum cable would be in series? I find this hard to grasp. Can you help me understand this please Joe

Hello sir good day 🙂 How about looking for the overall power factor given : load A = 3.6 KW at unity p.f load B= 11.5 KVA at lagging p.f of 0.6 load C=5.52KW at leading p.f of 0.8. Oi in which it is connected in parallel.

Joe, a burning question. Given that amperage is a function of conductor size, (coulomb of electrons) being pushed by most any voltage. The question is in a step down transformer (example 2-1 step down) INPUT 12 volts and 12 amps. The output would be 6 volts BUT the amps is GIVEN as double to 24. But, amps is a function of conductor size on the secondary winding, so what is the correct amperage when we do not know the conductor size, Confusing question? Thank you.
@JoeRobinsonTraining
@JoeRobinsonTraining 3 жыл бұрын
You kind of need to think about the question in reverse, there will be a load connected to the secondary side of the transformer, the resistance of this load combined with the secondary voltage will determine the secondary current. This will then determine the primary current. The power in to the power out of the transformer will be equal for a perfect transformer and so if the voltage is lower on the secondary the current will be higher to keep the power the same.

@@JoeRobinsonTraining Thank you. now looking at it in reverse. The load determine the current. Thank you again.

Hi joe , why could you not use the voltage drop formula? I know it’s r1 +r2 in the formula but as you have done you just double the resistance .After you calculate resistance , multiply that x 2 (line and neutral) vd=ib xl vd= 45x40x0.1325/1000? Then subtract that from the 230 cheers
@cristianbacu4010

There are 2 formulas for calculating the voltage drop, one for the single-phase circuit and a second one for the three-phase system. They account for Resistance, Reactance, Current and Phase angle, and of course the Lenght of the conductors. I think Joe will eventually get there with the presentations, but he needs to introduce few more concepts to be able to do that.

Joe great videos but in this instance I think your calcs are not entirely correct? If the motor is rated at 45A @ 230V then there is not 45A running through the circuit as there is not exactly 230V across the motor. Would it be better to first calculate the impedance of the motor , then the total resistance of the circuit and then the true total current; which I think is 43.86A ?
