This test compares flush factory choke tubes against extended ported aftermarket chokes. It tests pattern density and consistency of pattern distribution. I test both a waterfowl hunting ammo and a dove/crow/target load through factory modified and full chokes and then test them both through modified and full Carlson's extended ported aftermarket chokes. The results can help you pick the right choke tube for your budget and objectives.

I counted every single pellet on all targets in a 30" circle, shot at 40 yards. The results of this experiment showed an increase in pattern density with the aftermarket chokes, but no significant difference in how evenly the patterns were distributed. The stock chokes were the factory modified and full that came with my 12-gauge Mossberg 930 with a 28" barrel. Carlsons provided some of the chokes I tested in this video at my request, thanks to them for their support.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide NGD was this past Friday. Used, only came with flush full. I’ve shot fixed mod 1100 for most of my entire shotgun history. Someone gave me a Light Mod for the tournament . Pattern board Friday night only hurt me. Saturday morning , I was too concerned with my “up and left “ findings . Stations 1-3 on the main event , that morning weren’t so pretty . I borrowed a Mod ,at station 4, and proceeded to turn things around quite valiantly ! I think most of it was between the ears.

This test doesn't really show anything significant. Both full chokes threw essentially the same pattern. The modified chokes produced different patterns at 40 yards, but a "Modified" choke is defined as a choke that patterns 60% at forty yards. Hence the two "full" chokes were actually modified chokes and the "modified" chokes were somewhere between skeet and modified depending on the load. The fact that one of the tubes was extended and ported doesn't really mean anything. If your goal was to achieve the greatest pattern density at 40 yards, the factory "full" did just as well as the after-market choke.

Joe, I disagree. This test does show something significant. That there wasn't much difference, exactly what you pointed out. But it was real data from the field that shows some difference. Nothing groundbreaking. But if the truth is not groundbreaking then that is fine by me. People need more information based on real testing, not internet speculation. People everywhere claim all sorts of things about chokes, some are crazy. So I've set out to do real tests and show what's really happening, as unspectacular as that might be.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide What interested me in them was the fact that you don't have shot size restrictions even in full. I tested Kent fasteel 2.0 #2 1 3/8oz, boss 3/5 1 1/2oz and Federal #2 1 1/4oz all 3" shells and at 40 yds and longrange choke, had the highest percentage total (hits/pellets) in a 12in circle with the federal, although boss had a similar hit count, I couldn't find the 3/5 pellet count. Both had around 26-28in a 12in circle at 40 yds.

Great quick look at what going to an extended aftermarket choke can do for patterns. Good job. It has been my experience that the disparity between OEM and Aftermarket extended chokes is primarily due to length of the Parallel Section and the profile of the constricting section entering it. In this particular example, you have a very short choke system that has an abrupt constriction and short parallel section (Remington's and Mossberg's choke designs are among the shortest). Lengthening both the constricting and parallel sections of the chokes eases the shot charge's transition from Open Bore to constriction and better controls it on exit (at least in theory, there are always exceptions). As the choke design lengthens, however, I have seen less drastic differences between OEM and aftermarket chokes, especially when comparing extended OEM to extended aftermarket. Having looked at the results in the Beretta/Benelli Mobile (12 and 20ga), Benelli Crio (12ga), Browning Invector 10, and Winchester/Browning Invector (12ga - SX4), I can say that what mattered more on pattern efficiency and evenness between OEM and Aftermarket chokes was not just the length of the parallel section, but the diameter/constriction of a given choke for the shot type and sizes used. It is the later of these two that really makes the greatest differences in patterning efficiency and density for any given load. In my experience it has been more important to match the constriction needed to pattern well with a given load than it is the other way around, regardless of choke design and manufacture.

I hear you. What was interesting to me here is that the aftermarket full did only slightly better than the stock full for both loads, but the aftermarket modified did alot better for both loads. I've done some further testing since I recorded this and found that most of the time, aftermarket chokes provide significant benefit over factory the tighter you go when shooting bismuth. To the point where I feel bad about using some of those factory chokes for years hunting ducks.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide it’s all valid data points and shows the importance of patterning your gun/load/choke combos. There are the “rules of thumb”, but they mean bunk until you actually test your gear. When it comes to shotshell patterns for ducks and geese I see a lot of arguments about “it’s good enough, I don’t shoot past 40 anyways”, and while you can harvest critters with inefficient patterns and poor choice in shot materials, it raises the probability that you will have a bad pattern that doesn’t cleanly dispatch your quarry. To me, I want to know that if I do everything right and get that animal in that pattern it will 99% of the time die. I want the only factor in whether or not that animal is cleanly dispatched to be me. A good indian makes sure he can’t ever blame the bow. I’m glad you are putting together these videos. You’ve got a good presentation style and I’m sure it’s helping folks learn to be better hunters. Keep it up!

I tried some extended ported choke tube for my Benellis awhile back designed for Hevi Metal shells “back when they were good”. Compared to the crio tubes in my Benelli they did no better in fact a bit worse in most circumstances plus louder and better chance of muzzle blasting your hunting buddies. But admittedly the Benelli and the Mossberg are 2 very different guns.

Yea, Benelli is known for their factory chokes. Aftermarket chokes could yield better results, but it would be more a factor of random synergy than increase in quality.

Do you think aftermarket flush tubes would perform any different from factory flush tubes?
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 10 ай бұрын
That is a hard question. Best answer I can give is sometimes. The higher end the gun, the less likely I think aftermarket recessed chokes would boost performance. Cheap guns are more likely to see gains. But it really comes down to gun/choke fit. No 2 guns are the same. If I were going to buy chokes I would invest in quality extended tubes, probably Muller or Carlsons. If your stock chokes give you decent performance than stick with them.

What you are failing to compare is the actual constriction of the choke ie Bore size vs actual constriction. Extended this, ported that, X constriction (IC, Mod, Full) is meaningless. Mid range, Long Range etc is another bunch of marketing garbage. Many choke manufacturer's, in the fine print, state that it is an equivalent size rating. A Carlson “Mid Range” is dead in the middle between an IC and Mod in a factory Maxus II.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the feedback. I am half following you. Give me some numbers so I can make sure I am tracking with you. Do you mean focusing on say a 0.715 constriction vs the stated choke note as "Mod".
@marshprowler2739
@marshprowler2739 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNewHuntersGuide Choke is the difference between the bore diameter and choke diameter. So it looks like your gun has a nominal bore size of .730. Using Carlson example, the Bone Buster Mid Range is a .705 diameter which equals .025 constriction (Imp Mod), the LR is .690 which is .040 (Ex Full) and has steel shot restrictions. (If your factory “Full” doesn’t have steel restrictions, it most likely measures Imp Mod and patterns lead as such). Cremator MR is a .715 which equals .015 constriction (light mod) and the LR is .705, same as Bone Buster Mid range. A Briley BlackCloud Mid range is .020 etc. In my Super Back Eagle 3, NO aftermarket choke can touch the factory IC and Mod from 0-40 yards. You can look at some patterning I just did on my channel. The Maxus II wasn’t impressive with anything I already had, so I measured all of them, then ordered one based on actual constriction that should work with an SPECIFIC shell/load instead of name or “range”. P.S. I’m a competitive skeet shooter and am extremely familiar with testing chokes, barrel regulation POA/POI. Keep up the good work!
