My dad always said "Listen, I'm not just your parent, I'm your friend. But I don't have to be; respect goes both ways." I like that aproach because he let me know that my respect for him will be returned, and as long as I don't outright disobey him, he'll continue to be my friend.

The only thing "I'm not your mom, I'm your friend", along with many other of her parenting choices, taught me was that she was not a safe space. She was not safe to talk to. Now as an adult, I still don't tell either of my parents how I feel, who I talk to, what I'm struggling with. Saying that to your kid just doesn't work.

As a parent of 2, I have always been confused about this saying. I'm both to my kids. I want a connection with them and want to be included in their lives AND I want them to view me as an authority figure and respect my guidance. Those aren't mutually exclusive, and I'm at a loss to figure out why the hell anybody would think that they were? Just be good to your kids, show them that you care about them, support them emotionally and try to be the best example you can be. Shit's hard, but not impossible. FFS, burning your kids' stuff in retaliation for them not complying with your every demand? That's not parenting, that's straight up mental abuse and attempted conditioning. Those are your kids, not a slave and fashion accessory. wtf :| If you'll excuse me, after watching this video I feel compelled to go hug my kids and tell them that I love them.

It's more true to regarding how you speak to them. You don't usually address your parents with names like "dipshits" like you would with your local group of buddies for example. There is some formality and respect that are expected to be maintained. At least, that's how I interpret that sentence.

Parents can act out the "I'm not your friend, I'm your parent" thing in 2 very different ways. The first (and correct way) is clearly establish that you are the authority but you still respect the fact that the child is an individual with their own personality, interests, dreams, and shortcomings. This is perfectly healthy since it allows for reasonable boundaries and an appropriate amount of autonomy for the child. As the child matures this relationship also matures by gradually allowing more autonomy for the child and will eventually evolve into friendship when the child grows into an adult. The second (toxic as hell) way this can be used is a dictatorship where the parent assumes a god like position over every aspect of the child's life. People that grow up in this environment tend to have a lot of difficulties in relationships (romantic or others) and struggle to live independently since drill sargent isn't there to tell them to clean their living space, eat, or pay bills. Also, based on new research, if the dictatorship is emotionally invalidating and/or doesn't allow for the development of a personal sense of identity there is a significantly increased chance of the child to develop borderline personality disorder.

My favorite things about parents is when they yell at their kids for not following rules that they don't have to follow making themselves sound like hypocrites. If they're not going to regard the rules that they set in place, I or any other kid in the house shouldn't have to either. Also, I love how that mom didn't like how her son didn't want to do anything sports related and thought he wasn't a man. Clearly she has no idea how many sports related injuries can happen a year.

Scaring a child into submission will only teach them how to better hide the activities next time, not stop them. They will avoid communication with you as they will want to reveal less about their life for fear of unnecessary reprimanding, and will want to leave the situation in totality as soon as they’re able. If you want a respectable relationship with your child, instead of constantly questioning and belittling them, find alternatives you’re willing to compromise on, keep your line of communication open and as positive as possible, and support them through their mistakes-not controlling every aspect of their life, as they will find a way to gain freedom anywhere they can anyway (rightfully so). In trying to keep your child under your “watchful” (abusive/controlling) eye, you’re ensuring they will no longer want to be in your line of sight, effectively pushing them away. You are a friend, an authority figure, and an aide in survival. These are roles that are sacred, not to be undermined or abused. Someone who does so will face the long term consequences of no longer seeing/being a parent to their child, or will have set the precedent that this is behavior the child should accept from loved ones, ensuring they end up in a similar situation romantically. In this case, the individual they now dedicate their life to will likely perform a manipulation tactic such as isolation, gaining full control of their now partner, and you’ll lose the child through that means as well. TLDR; stop it. Get some help.

Yup. We get better at hiding, better at lying, better at listening for footsteps. We get more cautious, less trustful, and don’t know how to express ourselves or set boundaries. Helicopter parenting as it’s called is not an effective way of parenting. It just ensures that the child doesn’t trust anyone and doesn’t feel comfortable being themselves.

Listening to these videos have helped me to realize I’m not being dramatic or cruel for thinking my mother is abusive. She has been gaslighting my whole family all my life, so I could never trust my own thoughts, only her words. It’s taken a lot of time for me to even feel comfortable thinking I might not be to blame for being abused, and these videos, and Robin ranting, have helped me accept it. So thanks for for your unruly rants and rage over these terrible parents. You make me laugh and feel just a little bit more comfortable in my own skin.

When I moved in with my Nana, she gave me a new phone because my birthgiver refused to give me my other one back and for like- 6 months or so I refused to take it anywhere with me or put a password on it. I left it on the kitchen counter- Then one day I asked my Nana if I could bring it out to the restaraunt we were going to and she was like "well duh-" My mom convinced me I was always doing bad things on my phone for the longest time (I literally just called and texted my friends-) and so I was too paranoid to have any security on it. Thinking back on it, it makes me laugh thinking that my birthgiver constantly asking for my passwords and all kinda defeated the whole purpose of having them in the first place

Well this and the fact she literally posted her crime. Considering she said her password, it’s her phone. She likely was given it as a gift by the parents or someone else. That means potentially this woman has committed a crime by destroying someone else’s property and then documented said crime. I’m so glad more and more people are seeing it for what it is. Not a punishment, but as a literal crime, regardless of if it’s a parent and a child. I’ve never understood what destroying someone’s property shows.

Mom of two teenage girls, and I’m not going to lie, I usually skip the r/insaneparents because it’s so hard for me to listen to. I think about how my mom treated/treats me, and I think about how horrible my girls would feel if I treated them like some of these parents. It makes me _genuinely_ tear up. I almost finished this one (it was on while I cleaned), but I had to stop at 28:50. I cried... legitimately still have wet cheeks right now, and I’m not even going to pretend it was ninjas cutting onions! I can’t imagine how that little girl feels, and I can’t imagine why a mother would EVER want to hurt her child like that. I don’t understand. I wish I could hug and comfort and hold every hurting child out there, including adults that still have their hurting young selves trapped in their hearts. ♥️ Love and comfort and hugs for everyone, and I mean everything I say. ♥️ I try not to hate because I feel that hatred does nothing but poison myself, but I do feel a special type of rage when I read or hear about a parent/parents hurting their child(ren.) These “parents” spit in the face of the unconditional love a baby has for their parents, of the innocence each human being is born with. Oof... I’m going to go watch some funny videos ASAP because my heart hurts from sadness and my jaw hurts from fury-related clenching.

He verbally abused me and my sister including my mom as it felt like he was norhing but a ticking time bomb. One day he could come home and be happy, the next he could comw home and yell at everyone foe no reason. Him and my mom fought, he got mad at me for getting a math problem wrong, even one day he was telling me and showing me sexual stuff as it seriously made me uncomfortable and such as I couldn't say anything to anyone. He was soon suicidal and always threatened us be would off himself and of course everyday I was scared and nearly crying and such. Now Im a senior in high school and live with my sister and mom who live alright lives so far. We still see our step dad as he would take me and sis out sometimes when he had money.

Watching these makes me feel a bit better about my parents, bc at least they tend to realize thier mistakes and apologize. Now then that doesn't change that my mother is probably a narcissist and has what I think are may be autistic meltdowns bc idk any other reasonable way to explain her getting mad, throwing a tantrum, and angerly pouting and glaring at an autistic 10 y/o bc he had a panic attack and expressed he wanted to get off a fair ride before it started and she wanted to ride it. I know she's bipolar but damn that's a crazy thing to do. I (her 19 y/o child) knew and told her she needed food, she refused saying she was too mad, so I had her go back to go ride rides on her own since that's what she was mad she could do, while I took responsibility for the 10 and 17 y/o, so we got snacks and met up with her after she calmed down. Talked to her later about it and she thought it was ok to try and make him ride things he didn't want to bc that's what was done to her as a kid "and she turned out fine" (paraphrasing) but everyone's different and that's just how to break trust. She did however admit she knows she was acting childish. She thought her riding on rides and us sitting under the tent bc it was hot and we had no interest in the rides made her look like a bad mom, honestly I think the tantrum made her look worse I love her but I'm glad I don't live with her, cuz we're both a mess and my blunt honesty rubs her wrong about 80% of the time Will say later neither the 10 nor the 17 y/o wanted to ride the faris wheel she kept trying to convince the kid and I did a bit too but they really were just uncomfortable with it so I road with her and the two stayed together and were just fine. Boundaries and consent are very important even when it's small things, but especially with an autistic kid

They don't care a lot of the time. My mom still hasn't apologized for what she's done to me and my brothers. Narcissists especially don't care at all about their kids unless it makes them look better. Sometimes they change with time when they realize they've isolated themselves from their children with their abuse and manipulation, but other times they kinda just get sour and blame the kids for abandoning them.

2:12 I’ve actually talked to my parents about that and they brought up a good point. “We can be your friend but we will always be your parent first and as parents it’s our job to keep you safe and a friend would not keep you safe from what you are doing” brought up during a conversation about my unsafe choices

Important note: I am transgender. Alright so when I was in 7th grade, three of my friends invited me to go to the mall with them. I ask my parents, they say yes. My mom went off shopping and left me with said friends. Only one person's parents stayed with us. Now, keep in mind that I was 13 and the others were 11-12 (6th graders). We had a really great time. I got food, bought stuff with my own money, and just hung out overall. Then it gets late and everyone starts going home. It's just me and the friend who's parents stayed. My mother comes to get me. We walked away and start heading to the car, everything is normal. Then my mother begins to (negatively) comment on the person's parents, who were a lesbian couple. She says some s*** about how she doesn't approve of their relationship, and that they shouldn't have stayed with us. Basically saying that we should be left completely alone in the mall. Reminder that the other people were in 6TH GRADE. We leave the mall and go home, and my mother tells my father about my friends. All hell breaks loose in the living room as my parents full on scream at me for a HOUR about how 1, you can't be transgender (note: most of the friends I was with were also trans), 2, apparently the gay people existing was influencing me somehow, and 3, I may no longer talk to those friends outside of school ever again. I also got a lecture about how my parents were tired of me dressing masculinely. As an addition, my father also said several slurs in the span of a few seconds. I still have the words "WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU, YOUR FAMILY OR THESE G** D*** F*GS?" engraved in my memory. TLDR: Homophobic/Transphobic parents yell at a 7th grader for going to the mall with his transgender friends and tell him that he needs to dress more feminine before he "destroys his family."

One of the worst things when you cut your parents of is when you realize that the only reason you appear to feel worse now/ have more symptoms is because you don't have to be afraid of the consequences anymore, and you just have years of pent up pain and trauma expressing itself at the same time. And then your stupid brain is still going to ask you if you really did the right thing by leaving, because that's the kind of traces manipulative people leave with you. To that little voice, yes, yes it was the right thing to do. Hope everyone who's escaped terrible parents in the comments have a great life full of happiness and fulfillment

5:38 Got a friend who's kind of like that. We can set up a day and time, be like. Okay, that's where we can meet. But like somethings always up. Last time right before I checked my phone messages to make sure nothing had changed since we agreed in a place and time, I got a "So what then?" Again, I didn't read that until I was about to leave. So I'm just like "Yes, we just agreed on it, *what have I said that made you think otherwise?*" (I'm still without an answer to that.) And I started walking there,, got no messages on my way, later got there and called them a few times, waited a few minutes. Left afterwards. They apparently thought it was unclear if we were gonna hang out or not, so they did something else with that time.

Okay so, my mother tried doing the whole "I'm not your friend I'm your mom" AFTER WORKING HER WAY INTO MY FRIEND GROUP FOR DND When I got mad at her because she was telling an (ex)friend of mine about my personal life when he started cyberstalking me, she proceeded to ground me. For 2 months. Because I "had an attitude" when she was telling a guy 4 years older than me about my personal life an encouraging him to harass me.
