Why cant parents look after and care for you when you're no longer a kid? I read somewhere that a mother in her 90s and her daughter in her 70s both lived together in an old care home and the mother was still giving her daughter sweets. Some parents will always be parents. Heck some hens will still drop food to their fully grown children. Its cute and adorable
@girl1213

How much of it is appreciated and how much of it is entitled depend on person. And sadly the entitled want to shout to the world that they deserve to continue to be "taken care of" by their parents while people who are truly grateful have to be searched and found. There's also the line of smothering and disrespecting the fact that your child IS an adult, which many adults want their parents to respect. The daughter in her 70s you mentioned was suffering from dementia, so she needs her mother's care just as much as she would need the care workers' when the sadly inevitable happens.

There once was a woman who had 100 children. She named each of them after numbers in the order they were born. There was a fire and all of them died except Ninety. Ninety went off to have kids of her own. They were very kind and loving. One day they found an injured dog. They took it home and nursed it back to health. They hid the dog and never told their mother afraid she would kick the dog out. In fact, they never told anyone. To keep from arousing any suspicions they named the dog "This" so the name could be used in conversation. One day This ran away. They never saw This again. No one else knew about This. No one even knew a dog named This existed. Only Ninety's kids remember This.

For the writing one, the key thing: You cannot be limited to just your race and sexuality. I write the story of a guy with a Russian mother and an Inuit Father. My IRL parents are American. What I can do though is TALK to people who do have those experiences, to learn of the cultures, see how they may interact, etc. You don’t have to write yourself to be a legitimate writer, and it really pisses me off when people say otherwise. My protagonist and I would disagree on a lot of things. In my Aspergers I talk to women to see if another character who is also a woman, has a similar socialization (expressed via thoughts, behaviours etc) If you want to make a character that is not you, great! It is suggested to learn so that you properly represent people. This way you don’t make stupid mistakes, like merging the Inca and the Aztecs because that is all you think old Mesoamerican cultures were like, and not as diverse and fascinating as they actually are. TL;DR write what you know, is beautiful because you can LEARN. You do NOT need to write what you ARE.
@joylox
@joylox Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be really boring if everyone just wrote about people like them? There'd be no diversity in the cast of characters. I like when people write about their experiences, but it's so important to also learn about others. We wouldn't have people who study history and write reports on it if that was gatekept, but they look into the region, the artifacts, the folklore and passed down history, to write about what that culture or that experience is.

I wish it were so simple as just asking people for how to write something. I want to be inclusive in my writing, especially with neurodivergent characters since I'm autistic myself and I know good neurodivergent characters are few and far between, but often when I ask, I'm shut down, told "just don't write about us you'll only fuck it up and if you even try we'll do everything we can to shut you down" and like. I get it, but how are you ever going to get more accurate representation, more people to understand you, and less people who think there's something *wrong* with you, when you lambast people for asking and wanting to get it right?

Not to mention you largely can't survive as a restaurant by only having a minority for guests. Sure, in a large city you can have that authentic eatery where you cater to a Chinese audience. But in rural areas you just don't have enough Chinese people to do that. And even if you're de facto a community institution, you still have to serve every customer and why not? Not having enough room to seat everyone is a rare luxury problem. There is a kind of trend towards more interest in exotic and novel food, particularly a larger variety of ethnicities and their dishes. Gatekeeping people from experiencing food, among the most accessible and shareable cultural expressions, is stupid and segregationist. I never heard of someone resenting paying customers for enjoying their food so long as they are halfway respectful.

10:20 So I'm Latino. I used to be relatively dark skinned. Idk what happened but every fucking ounce of melanin left my body. My black, Kinky hair uncurled and is straight/brown now. My brown eyes turned blue. My skin is so goddamn pale that I don't tan, I burn, INSTANTLY. I have no idea what happened. I just faded over 4-5 years. My brother too. There's no way it's vitiligo. Idk. But when I used to show my face I would get so heavily harrassed because I specifically said I was Latino and everyone was accusing me left and right of lying, that latinos are brown not white ect. I've never felt more goddamn rage. But the worst part? My hair REFUSES to curl. I tried so many ways and it won't. I used to be so proud and happy with my looks because I looked just like mi abuelo and it made me feel big and strong and brave just like he was! And after being harrassed it made my insecurity about whatever happened to me so much worse and now I won't even put my HANDS in public photos and I actively darken my skin tone when I post my face (which again, I keep to friends). I at least want my hair back...

A teen girl at a pizza shop gave me a dirty look because I wouldn't tip on a $10 pizza when all she did was hand me the card machine. I'd tip for a pizza delivery, but not that. "Guilt tipping" is getting out of hand. I empathize with service workers, especially considering the sitatution and the last few years, but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. I don't have a lot of money (poor) and so it just seems like there's so much extortion of extra costs where there used to be none. I can't afford to pay an extra 2-5$ for every cost on top of tax. fun story about people getting offended by pants one of my friends told me this story about her mom. so I'm guesstimating it happened in 1970-80 she (my friend's mom) came from a very rural area, very traditionalist. But she went to study in a big city in the north for university and picked up some more relaxed habits. especially about dressing. she started wearing pants because everyone else was doing it and she found them comfortable. not a problem untill she went back to her parent's house for summer vacation. she didn't want to get back into a gown because comfort so she just went with pants. her parents didn't really love it as much as she did but they knew better than judge her from her clothes' choice. her father told her that if anyone ever disrespected her she should tell him and that ended the conversation. well, as it happened there was no need for it because no one told her anything (apart from the disapproving looks) they just went directly to her father with their complaints (they were sure he could make her stop or something) the conversation went something like this: "Why are you letting your daughter dress like that? it's immodest and immoral. She should be wearing a gown!" "why? so that it's easier for you to lift it?" and no one ever said anything again.

Being Bisexual who often leans towards male partners I felt like guilty for saying I'm in the LBGTQ. There is that worry about how people would be if I dated a woman seriously. I don't want to be a mother and some people respond with 'people have kids in wars and it works out' and I'm like....thats not good. Gatekeeping is insanity. It is important to call out people faking disorders or self diagnosis but yay.

I know how you feel pal, I’m Arrow ace and I identify as every gender (meaning I use any pronouns) and sometimes since I don’t give a big deal about people using my birth pronouns or because I’m not in any queer relationships sometimes I feel like my gender is isn’t as important but over time I learned that you shouldn’t worry too much about conforming to not conforming and no matter what you’re gender is valid

I'm sick and tired of my mom gatekeeping pretty much anything. Most of all productivity. It's always, you're lazy, you can't be stressed, you can't be depressed, you can't be tired. First it was: "you're in college and I have to work, you live in luxury" Then it became: "You work in shifts and get to go home, I work with sick people 24/7" And now I'm almost never home because of work: "You're a manager, you don't do real work. Can't you just take a day off and come home?!" I'm sick of this bullshit attitude where boomers shoot down other generations without even thinking about it, just to make themselves feel better, but then instantly regret it once they run out of negative things to say. WHAT ARE YOU, 12?!

25:54 Kind of unrelated but the boneless chicken thing reminded me of something. My dad was eating boneless chicken with a fork. He bit the fork by accident a piece of his tooth came off. He fished it out of his mouth, showed us the piece and said “Yeah, that’s my tooth.” We were like “Oh.” We then continued eating supper like nothing happened.

I noticed most of the restaurants being safe spaces for other Chinese people a lot. It's honestly really cool to see so many people of an entirely different ethnicity all in one place just, chatting and eating food. Not being harassed by others like you would see in schools or on the streets, just living their own lives and enjoying it. My family is hispanic mostly, so sometimes when we eat at a Chinese restaurants we kind of just go "hah that's funny. we the only non-asians here" and sit down and eat. We didn't bother anyone, we didn't try to, we were just there for the food. And hey, we're supporting a local business and not McDonald's for once. I joke about the chopsticks being annoying to use but it's because I lack the proper skill and practice to use them. I'm bad at sculpting too you expect me to throw shade at Alice Adams? Chinese food tastes amazing and I don't understand why someone would get so worked up about eating food people like. If I told everyone to stop consuming tamales because it's cultural appropriation my family would disown me on the spot. The idea that you cannot eat certain dishes because they were created by people who you weren't descended from is stupid and ironically enough is pretty racist on it's own. I'm not speaking on behalf of chinese people, I'm speaking from experience as a POC myself and applying that logic to this situation. Eat whatever you want, I don't care.

Those do. I think that doctor thing is just usually before the first responders arrived like boy scouts. If you get your first stage first aid badge in boy scouts you like learn how to do first aid for before the first responders arrived to help and keep the person living and no longer going to the realm of the shadows, so I think it's more of that than anything
