Poor man's JCW upgrade. I upgrade the brakes on my 2006 Mini Cooper S to the R56 brakes. No need for a big brake upgrade. It's not a DIY but it should give you some good info.
Braided lines and EBC yellows. I also add some powerstop components. I guess this can count as a review of powerstops? Maybe not.

Just found your channel since I'm about to upgrade my brakes and rear trailing arms (on my daily). So far i'm loving your content and how you explain everything. I just wanted to add those screws holding the rotors on are basically to hold them from falling off on the assembly line before the calipers get put on. I Never put them back in unless it's giving me a hard time setting the pads, sometimes the rotors are heavy and keep pushing them out, but 9 out of 10 times I throw them out.

I feel okay now because I have assembled everything I need..calipers and carriers, rebuild kit, HEL Braided Lines, Pagid RS pads (OEM for BMW ///M cars), grooved and dimpled rotors, caliper aerosol paint, lacquer and decals for £250 including sundries. My calipers are the most rusted one's i have ever seen, but I'm expected them to be perfect once I've restored them. I'll be smoothing the casting out too because I hate the sandcasted appearance of stock calipers.

Great vid! I recently bought an R53 and I too wondered if the car has ABS, it never kicks in as well. I'm probably going to do the same upgrade, brand new big brake kits are too expensive.

How did that banjo fitting workout for you? Seemed tight, and I received the same lines from Sneed4Speed but from everything I’m reading the lines going into the r56 calipers should be direct?

Nice vid! But keep in mind that new brake pads have to were in, so no emergency brakes and such the first couple of hundredth miles

@@skylined5534you can have pads bedded in even faster than that. Find an open quiet section of road and you can have it done in under 10 min

Hi, nice video! I would have a question: are the front brake pipes the same as those of the R53 such as length and attacks?
@RegardingAutomobiles
@RegardingAutomobiles Жыл бұрын
They are not the same. If you do this swap you NEED the R56 brake lines. The attachments going to the car are the same but on the calliper they are different. I recommend going for the stainless steel lines as they tend to be cheaper than the OEMs and probably give better performance.

@@RegardingAutomobiles I already have the brake lines in steel with the standard r53 system. I wanted to upgrade with the r56 brake, do you think by changing the banjo can I use the same lines? or do I have to buy the brake lines again? Thank you!

Can’t say, sorry. I’ve never read about anyone keeping or modifying the R53 lines or bolts when they switch to the R56 callipers.

does doing this give you less brake clearance behind the wheels

It does but I used the factory 17” rims and no problem. I have read the 16” are fine too. Check NAM for full threads on this.

8:35 everyone who owns a German car has been here... top tip: use penetrating oil and handtools. Then, when that doesn't work, and manual impact tool, when that doesn't work, grind the face off and hit the back of the rotor with a hammer.

Or a very large bit will drill just the head off and you can usually then take the shaft if it off with vice grips or even your fingers after. My favorite technique involves a propane or mapp gas’s torch to heat them up, quenching with pb blaster, then giving them an impact to loosen.

Hello, really stupid question, but will the R56 S Cooper brake upgrade will fit on the R50 Cooper 16" { R83 5-star (aka Daytona) } wheels?

Did you re-bleed after activating ABS the good ol' fashioned way? Most advice I've seen online says that this upgrade requires a scanner to activate and then bleed the ABS system, to stop the brake pedal slowly sinking to the floor.
@RegardingAutomobiles
@RegardingAutomobiles Жыл бұрын
I didn’t. My understanding is that you only need to use a scanner for the ABS if the tank goes dry. I swapped mine directly so I lost very little of the original fluid before I bled them. Pedal felt fine when I was on the track.

Five years later, what brake pads are you running with these days ?
@RegardingAutomobiles
@RegardingAutomobiles 2 ай бұрын
Well, right after this video I took the car to the track and blew the engine. It took me four years to figure out how to pull an engine apart and get the car running again. So after all that, I am still running the same pads. Hope to put a lot more use on them this summer.

What shop did you take the calipers for rebuild? You needed R56 brake lines with the upgrade?... because R53 lines wouldn't work? Love the channel! It's like watching myself work. Hahaha...

Thanks a lot! I was guessing you live in Oakville or Burlington. London is a bit far for calipers. Found a place in Toronto that will get me rebuild rear calipers for $90 each. Hope the project is going well!

Won't the R56 rear brakes work as well?
@RegardingAutomobiles
@RegardingAutomobiles 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve read that you can make it work with some modifications or if you swap in the r56 rear arms but I’ve never read anywhere that it improves stopping power. Also the eBrake cable is different in some way.
