As someone who doesn't care about multiplayer and had never played Halo, the Master Chief Collection was fantastic. It had one of the best features in any remake: you could smoothly switch between the remastered gameand the original ones by just hitting a button. The graphics, sound, music and even pre-rendered cutscenes changed in a second. Every remake needs a feature like that.

As someone who only plays campaigns and no multiplayer, The Master Chief Collection was amazing. Also, Reach has the best campaign. It represents a tonal shift from fun sci-fi adventure to extremely grim war game, and the stakes are much higher for it.

I remember the days when Halo was 'THE GAME'. Sadly, it is currently just a shell of its former glory.

As someone who absolutely loved Halo Reach, I still can’t see anything but Halo 3 as the best I’m the series. Halo CE had a great campaign, Halo 2 had incredible multiplayer. Halo 3 was the first to game to have both. For all the hype the game had (and it’s still one of the most hyped up games ever), it really did deliver on pretty much everything it promised, a truly generational game.

One year before it Quake III showed it was possible to make an FPS on consoles that is online with their Dreamcast release (and it even had crossplay!). Contrary to what you're saying, Halo [1] could have very well come out with online play.

I just wanted to say that your bit for last week's April Fools video where you hyped up the #1 spot insanely only to do THAT by the end of it was so damn good. Well freaking done on that one, man.

Honestly 3 only has 3 issues for me otherwise it would be perfect. 1) the visuals aren’t that dated but human models look really bad and a remaster would do a lot in that department. 2) the story ends fantastically but I don’t like how the first half of the game was written as “more fighting”. Like legit the game could have immediately went from chief crashing into the mission on Voi. 3) personal thing but elites are more fun to fight than brutes (before infinite anyway) and I think reach has the most fun elites in the series to fight comparatively.

Halo 3 is my personal favorite of the franchise. Even with 343 Guilty Spark as the final boss!

I grew up with Halo, and as much as I love the games, including those made by 343i, I can’t deny that the franchise has become niche. And that’s just fine. No king rules forever.

I remember introducing my dad to these games when I first played the shit out of "Halo: Combat Evolved" on the first laptop I ever owned. Ever since we first played the first Halo together, we made it a tradition where, after attempting it on Legendary, we would play every newly-released Halo game on Legendary together. We stopped before 5, seeing as, at the time, we didn't have an Xbox One, and we just didn't have the time for it any more, so we stopped at 4. I remember we actually left the Xbox on when we had to take a break seeing as, for some odd reason, dunno if it was a glitch, but every time we continued our campaign, it'd start us over, not from the last saved checkpoint, but from the beginning of the mission. Were I to pick my personal favorite out of all the ones I've played, I think I'd have to pick Halo Reach, seeing as it felt like the most complete experience, but I definitely agree with the top spot, seeing as that WAS the first one I ever played; likely hundreds of hours poured in to beating it multiple times on Legendary, and just futzing around in online multiplayer...good times... =^.^=

I think your list is pretty good, honestly. As someone that grew up with these games, I won't lie in saying that I kinda hate what 343i has done with the games, least of which being how they changed the Forerunners, but the series is still something near and dear to my heart.

Halo 3 will always be my favorite. It's just all the little details, the sound design, the bullet spray, the smoke, the physics, the explosions, the glossy pastel visuals, the heavenly extra-galactic scale of the art design, the iconography of the cutscenes, and plants that move when you touch them. It was the perfect storm of a game. I love how scrappy Halo 2 was and how much spirit Halo CE had, and Reach absolutely continued to refine the formula, but there's no other game with the level of finesse of Halo 3.

Halo 5: Guardians was so unpopular because of what i praised Halo 4 for. I liked Halo 4 for bridging the gap between the novels and the games and making them more of a cohesive narrative. Halo went overboard and made the novels like Fire Team Osiris required reading. The marketing did a good job bridging the gap, but a lot was missed, like Master Chief and the surviving SPARTAN-IIs became vilified because ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) took over UNSC HOMEFLEET, and the head honco at the time, Admiral Whitcomb personally hated Dr. Haley and the SPARTAN-IIs with a burning passion, to the point he started nasty rumors and intentionally misinformed the pubic about how horrible Halsey and her SPARTANS where all of this being 'official UNSC broadcasts' (the commercials and marketing for Halo 5), to the point all their allies ended up out of the picture some how.(Admiral Lord Hood was put under house arrest by the now ONI run FLEETCOM and Lasky was given a backwater assignment that kept him busy for example.) that's why the books, and even some of the games like Reach, have the recurring motto among the front-line soldiers "Never trust the spooks at ONI".

Honestly MCC needs to be higher it's been years since it's first realse and the multiplayer is fixed and everything about it is amazing. just because games can realease in poor states doesn't mean they need to stay there. It shouldn't be used a a crutch though but if a game updates and becomes better that should be taken in account.

Halo : Reach is THE nostalgic game to me. Every time, I remember playing it for hours with my friend, doing nothing but goofing around in Forge and online. And THAT LAST MISSION. HOLY SH*T.

Putting Halo 4 over Infinite is a real hot take there, I sympathize a little because the plot is interesting in 4 and I dont think open world suited Halo because it makes it so theres less variety in the worlds you explore, but I really think Infinite was the best game since 3 for its new mechanics, art style and finally found a way to wrap up Cortanas relationship with MC without lighting the world on fire

We need weirder rankings. Every Halo ranked from Most to Least. Every Halo ranked by how enjoyable it is to just idle at the title screen. Every Halo ranked by the worst state the options menu can be in.

I have Halo 3 at #1 honestly, Halo died with Reach and while the multiplayer in Reach is amazing, it just didn't fill the shoes 3 did, and yes Halo 2's campaign has the best story any video game in the last 20 years has had, Halo 3 was the perfect send off to the perfect trilogy, going out with a bang, and most peoples' childhoods got MADE off of the multiplayer in Halo 3, from the custom game fat kid lobbies, to the voice coms of Halo 3's community, etc. Halo 2 didn't have that togetherness Halo 3 had, and neither did Reach

Whenever I watch one of these videos, I notice that people like to point out that Halo 1 did not have online multiplayer but fail to mention the system link capability that was just as important to it’s success as Halo 2 with Xbox live. Meeting up with a bunch of your friends, clearing out a room to make space for several bulky xbox consoles and even bulkier crt televisions. People forget that at the very beginning, this is what Xbox was known for. Halo was a lan party game before xbox live.

As someone playing the master chief collection rn: Halo 3 > Halo 2 >>> Halo Reach > Halo 3 ODST >>> Halo 1. Have not started Halo 4 yet, can't rank it. Edit: I should specify that I am talking from pure SP perspective, because the multiplayer is uninteresting to me.

I'm very surprised you put Halo 1 at the top. I can kind of understand your reasoning in that it had a massive impact and got so much right on the first try. However, to me it gives the implication that the series peaked at the very beginning and never got better, an implication that I fundamentally disagree with! Personally the only change I would make to this list is to put Halo 1 in between 4 and ODST.

Personally i dont think 343 are doing a bad job, halo wars 2, halo 4 and halo infinity are all great games, but it dont make up for halo 5 (im talking story wise)

I do agree with most of these. Yes halo 3 should've had a longer campaign in my opinion, multiplayer doesn't need any explanation. Halo 2 for me had almost the complete package, although some levels from the campaign were worse than others due to how quickly they had to redo the game and finish it. Probably had potential to be absolutely insane when looking at their plans for it. Multiplayer at that time was on a new level, only thing lacking if we compare it with todays standards would be unlocks and customization. Halo ce for me is just so damn fun to play and my favourite , love the campaign and yes for some it feels repetitive but I'm one of the people that think Two Betrayals is the best level in the franchise. Multiplayer has really fun gunplay.

Reach is not better than H2 or H3, not even close. But it is a strong enough 4th place finisher after the OT. But I think the better conversation is more analytic. For example.. Halo has the best world building (duh) H2 has the best campaign and story, H3 really shines in multiplayer / competitive play where it dominates in every way to this day and likely forever. Halo Reach then peaked with the strongest forge/creative, building from what H3 started. Halo MCC then dominates in terms of achievements and overall replay value with the community supporting online play very strong and nearly endless challenges to be completed in campaign domains, and then they add in crazy fun skulls (looking at you acrophobia) to make Halo a totally new and fun experience fighting in a totally new way while exploring endlessly, especially in H2 where you don’t die from collision, fall damage, and there are very very few invisible barriers stopping you from flying off into literal sunsets.

Halo 1 from a sheer game feel and weapons sandbox I feel hasn't been surpassed by any other game in the series. While later games simplified and balanced things as they pushed graphics in ways that often times undermined level design and AI density, halo 1 was still old school enough to have some of that boomer shooter DNA in there. The shotgun kicks like a mule and people underestimate the plasma pistol. They are so busy overcharging it that they don't realize you can fire it as fast as the jackals do on legendary and melt people. Every weapon (except the assault rifle, ironically) has such a strong place in the roster and feels so damn good to shoot.

Halo 2 deserved #1 imo, it improved on what the first game introduced. I also don't really mind the cliffhanger, it never bothered me. To me, the endings that lead up to a sequel are cliffhangers in their own right, even if they neatly finish up, so I don't see why it matters.

i think you heavily underestimated how crucial forge was to the halo 3 multiplayer experience. sharing your favorite custom games and maps on your profile and looking through other people's stuff while in lobbies has essentially never been recreated imo, it was a completely unique experience and if one had a core group of friends to fuck around with in custom games i'm certain they'd put halo 3 as #2 at worst, and likely #1. halo 3 multiplayer wasn't just a competitive shooter, or fun social tactical game, it was hide n seek, zombies, grifball, puzzles, bumper cars, and more, all stretching forge mode and the game to its absolute limits

Reach is my favorite but like all opinions, im biased. I didnt grow up with xbox. So i just listened to everyone say how great it was and occasionally play 2 with my buddy but i was like "meh". I watched my "rich" cousin (we refered to them as rich cuz they were spoiled rotten. Even now 20 years later they are pampered people) play 3 and i didnt get the hype. But i loved in 2010 and met a buddy that played Reach and i got massively into it. Though i only played Swat. I eventually unlocked the confetti head shots which i loved lmao. Then 4 came out and it was okay. Played the zombie or whatver mode but i didnt like it as much and ive never played 5 or Infinite. Got the collection with my Xbox and started the campaign but didnt get far lol. One of those games where i wish i was into it more but just cant

Halo 3 is my favorite in the series but it’s the multiplayer that makes it that. I’m not much of a multiplayer guy but I sank hundreds of hours into Halo 3’s multiplayer. Hands down the best, most balanced multiplayer ever (as far as shooters are concerned). If we only talk about campaigns though then it’s definitely Combat Evolved. I was very young when Halo dropped but I vividly remember that opening sequence when you get to the Halo ring like it was yesterday.

Halo CE anniversary did *not* have a multiplayer. It came with a map pack for Halo Reach. So I have no clue what you're talking about with the anniversary multiplayer

Halo Reach is my favorite before the 343 updates.

My ranking would be: 8. ODST. Probably the only Halo game I dislike. The game is just a lazy Halo 3 reskin without any of it's charm. The story was boring, no memorable characters except for Buck (but that's only because of later games). 7. Halo 5. Multiplayer was really fun. But the campaign was REALLY bad. Still better than ODST though. 6. Halo CE. It's a good game, but it hasn't aged that well in my opinion. 5. Halo 2. The first halo game I played. It's okay. 4. Halo Wars. I could finally play as the covenant. That's why I love it. 3. Halo 3. Great story, fun memories with friends (note, I didn't have a xbox back then so I can't judge it's online multiplayer) 2. Halo 4. The best campaign in my opinion. Really fun to play through. Not the best multiplayer. 1. Halo Reach. Awesome multiplayer, pretty good campaign. The game I spend most time in during the 360 era, pretty much played it every single day. Haven't played Halo Wars 2 or Halo Infinite (campaign) so can't rank them here

The Nostalgia for Halo Reach is truly bizarre. The Multiplayer is the worst in the series. Did you forget the RNG shots? Campaign is great for book readers like me(they even retconned that tho 🤮)but it’s like 1% of the game. 4-5th best game

Okay, literally nowhere in the ad campaign for Hunt the Truth had Chief as a Tyrant, Locke's first reveal as an ONI assassin being sent to kill chief, in a time where we know ONI is a shady fucking government op, was supposed to be your first hint that what you're being told isn't true. Secondly from Chiefs perspective it was meant to be a more indepth, whoops i almost killed humanity, like what Cortana freaked about in HaloCE when he almost activated the Halo ring and is also the only thing that remained from the original story. 5's story is bad enough as is, why make shit up? Also H:CEA didn't have multiplayer, it was just reach's with CE maps remade on Reach based on a popularity poll (blood gulch not returning because it was already in Reach as a big ass forge map) I also would have swapped halo wars 1 and 2, the original has some dogshit levels (looking at you Arcadia City, Scarab, and the Flood) while 2 has a lot more consistent level design in base game ( Spearbreaker dlc is very difficult but I think that was the point, forcing you to work with limited resources) Not to mention Halo Wars 2 does at several point do things differently from the build base, amass troops strat that also doesn't put you in a shitty time limit or make you redo an hours worth of progress if you fail, the only bad level was Hold the line, it goes on forever, and you need to know when to point your swarm of wasps to delete a large group of enemies before you're told they're coming otherwise they'll break the barriers before youre fastest and strongest group can stop them.

First Halo is great, but frankly I think it's aged poorly. So much of the game is going through reused rooms and environments over and over again, if you don't know about the Magnum being busted or decide to try something else, then you're at a massive disadvantage.

I've always disliked halo 2's multiplayer. Campaign is great, MP is dogshit... I was there when we had LAN parties, and everyone wanted to play Lockout... Worst map design ever for Multiplayer.

Not gonna lie, Reach was supposed to be #1. It was Bungie's last hoorah on Halo before they moved on to Destiny and what a hoorah it was. I will always continue to say that Reach is the best in the franchise and nobody will change my mind. I've made tons of memories of that game alone. To be fair, I've had the other older three as well I just adore Reach.

Thank you thank you thank you for not listing Halo 2 as the best Halo game. It doesn't deserve that title, and I suspect too much nostalgia is clouding older game's minds when they list it as number 1.

How tf is Halo Infinite's story "back on form"? Most of the story happens off-screen before the game even starts and just gets told to you through boring audio logs, and if you haven't played Halo Wars 2, you'll have absolutely no clue what's even going on. It's a disjointed mess.

Halo CE is the worst in my opinion. I've never seen worse level design and I've played a lot of games.

CE at 1 is such a nostalgia bias pick. the levels are repetitive, then you end up playing old levels in reverse, the endless waves of flood spam sucked and it had bad missions and even a terrible one in the library that you just pray ends soon. genuinely one of my lowest ranked halo games if i made a full ranking. only thing saving it is the story, characters and the setup for the whole franchise, otherwise not a fun game

Hate to say this but Halo CE is objectively worse in comparison to the rest of the trilogy, I understand the points he was making about the importance and effect of what the game did at the time for the foreseeable future for the FPS genre n blahblahblah.. but these are all legacy points, literally any other Halo game in the trilogy serves as a direct upgrade of pretty much everything the first game had to offer, still a great game don’t get me wrong, but not the #1 as objectively it just hasn’t aged as well as the others, like come on the second half of the campaign is just backtracking the first half plus the infamously known WORST mission in the whole franchise which I don’t need to mention...
