Fantastic video. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the "why" of your past decisions instead of just documenting what you did and not discussing the pros and cons of each option.

YES! First video I've found that touches on the actual thought and planning of chassis design so I can dive deeper down the rabbit hole. I've been searching youtube for about 5 days for something like this. I'll be watching any other videos you have on this for sure. Thanks for taking the time to make this!

First? I would also thank you for these wonderful series, which has more or less demystified the process of building a car for me

Hey Ben - your videos are really well done! I just found your channel today so new subscriber. You've included a lot of great tips and explanations in this one - I went through a similar learning process a few yrs ago when I built my chassis. Carroll Smith's Tune to Win was a great resource for me at the time - publication is decades old but still relevant. I went the push-rod route with corvette knuckles front and back (with lots of mods) - a few things I might have changed if I started over but that's how these builds go. If I'd seen a video like yours before beginning, it definitely would have sped up my design work! Thanks for taking time and sharing all your insights with the community, I'll definitely be watching a few more of your videos in the coming weeks!

Thank you for doing these videos. I have been working out an idea of building my own classic style open wheel car and you have saved me a fortune in knowledge and frustration. I’ve ordered a bunch of books you recommended and am changing a great deal of my design already. So glad I came across this when I did. Hope to hard park my chassis near yours one day. Maybe even compare a lap time. 😄

You’ll have to drive my car along with yours for a proper comparison, I suck as a driver!

Don't forget to look at the brake torque around the upright when calculating the rod ends in bending. The lower ball joint gets a lot more bending force because of this moment on top of the pure longitudinal force. That's why it seems some cars get away with rod ends in bending on the upper wishbone, as the braking moment somewhat counters the braking force, but on the lower one it doesn't.

Just when you think you have a plan for your suspension, THEN you look at the Ariel Atom suspension and go, damn, I need that on mine.......

Thanks - I read the chassis book, but did not pick up on the differences in forces for the different suspension mounts. I now need to re-check my design. But now, before I built any of it is definitely the time to check!

Thank you so much for your very interesting and nice videos. I have restored some cars earlier and buildt a FFR Cobra. I was planning on an other kit (GT40), but you inpired me - so now I am hoping to build a Lotus 49. It will be more a look a like than a replica, because of engine, spaceframe vs monocoque. Will be following you here!😊👍

What is really hard to find is information on production car chassis improvement, how to examine such a body/chassis and improve it for racing purposes. An amateur can do it to some degree by following load paths but of course production cars are compromises to take account of passenger accommodation and safety so it's a real challenge sometimes.

I've always liked the Fred Puhn book "How to Make Your Car Handle"...rather old now (from the 1970s?), but a ton of useful info.

I came to ask this. I'd love to see a video where you review all of the books or sources you've used to educate yourself on the design principles.

Great video Ben and well done on the work you’ve done so far. Just out of curiosity could you tell me where you sourced the parts you showed during the vid, like the threaded control arms, circular ball joint holder etc. I’m in Australia and I’m contemplating building a replica Brabham BT 19 of which only 1 was built and is a legendary car here. Keep up the good work. 👍

Threaded ball joint sleeve: www.speedwaymotors.com/Steel-Upper-Ball-Joint-Sleeve-K772-Style,2126.html Sleeve with attaching points: www.speedwaymotors.com/Upper-Ball-Joint-Collar-Ring-and-Steel-Clevis-Kit,379575.html But if you're doing an open wheel car something like this would look more period correct. You'd just run spherical bearing with a bolt through it instead of a ball joint: www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=1825-150 Threaded tubes can be found in aluminum or steel. Search for terms like threaded tube, swedge tube, swedged tube or swadge tube.
