Racism is a disgusting waste of time and energy. Ignorance is Racism. We as Polynesian Uni students must not let these ignorant asswipes affect our dreams and goals and we must continue and complete our studies. Take a year off or two but always complete your studies. It took me 8 years to complete by BA and LLB and GDLP combined due to economic reasons not Racism. Though Racism wasn't a driving force wanting to complete my degrees I wanted to do it for me and prove it to myself. There were a lot of nay sayers who were negative about the time it took me to complete. All the nau sayers were fellow Polynesians and Faafafine. So much for support. But I used their negative words meant to push me down. But I ended up finishing and being the FIRST Samoan Faafafine & transgender woman to complete her law degree in Australia and be admitted to the bar and be on the role of the Supreme Court and Federal Court of Australia. No one can take those pieces of paper away from you. No one.

Samoans aren't indigenous in NZ .They are migrants like the Pakeha and the Asians . No difference. Maori are the tangata whenua in Aotearoa and have no other land they can go where their language and culture are paramount. Pacific Islanders have that as a privilege.

@@MrAhuapai True, Tangata Whenua are the Indigenous Peoples of Aotearoa New Zeaand. However, the word 'Indigenous' is universal & applies to any First Nation Peoples from one's homeland eg NZ, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Niue, PNG, Solomon Is, Vanuatu etc in the Pacific. The word Indigenous goes with them regardless of what foreign land they migrate to.

@@vosavaka-viti625 Indigenous coming from a particular place and having lived there for a long time before other people came there. The term Indigenous relates to being from that place. They dont have to be first nations as we know them. Italians are indigenous to Italy.Migrants are not. In NZ its disingenous to refer to Samoans or Tongans as indigenous as they are a migrant population. Its also used in a political sense First Nation as terminology where the original population have been overtaken by a dominant population. pacific Islanders should use the term when they are in their own land not when they are living on another indigenous persons land.

Very true, racism, ignorance, rudeness and bad service I experienced at the Student Info Desk of UoA. Undergraduates with their parents, caregivers and guardians {of pasifika origin that has no knowledge of today's technology computers} are refused to see someone for help with their first time experiences to apply to UoA. Only to be told to go on the computer, go online and apply. No wonder, our Maori and Pacific students loose interest, give up and drop out because of such attitude coming from people that works at the UoA. This has to be stopped and something has to be done about it. School Career Services personnel are not so great helpers either. And so, who will help the unfortunate one's? God help us!

Even my IT teachers at high school acted in the same manner unless if I was asking them advanced stuff, but than again, I am not entirely sure if it would be different if I was Pacifika.

The race based affirmative action entrance score and pass rate/scholarships is one of the reason why people display racist attitudes towards Maori an Pasifika people. Using history is no excuse to have those race based privileges. To stop pre-judicial attitudes, you need a even ground and proof to yourself that you, besides you race is no different to anyone else. What disguises me is your affirmative action schemes into hard subjects like med. There will be a few, admittedly less (as stats from Otago) Maori and Pasifika who achieved comparable exam scores to other Asians or Europeans which are been looked down on due to affirmative action. People in NZ will know about it. When they find a GP, they are going to automatically correlate race to qualification, skills and ability and as such, they'd likely choose a non-maori/pasifika GP.
@wayneamituanai7278
@wayneamituanai7278 8 жыл бұрын
No, people who display racist attitudes towards Maori and Pacific students just don't understand affirmative action. You say history is no excuse ? Well Pakeha wrote that "excuse" when they agreed to meet the obligations of underprivileged populations under the Treaty of Waitangi to develop an "even ground".And mate don't ever go associating the word "privilege" with disadvantaged populations because that's just plain ignorant. Affirmative action for the Medical and Health Sciences is to bridge the health disparities and inequalities between Maori/Pacific and Non-Maori/Pacific populations. Also, Maori/Pacific medical graduates usually go back and serve their underprivileged communities so your whole "choosing a GP" argument is full of crap. The people doing the "choosing" here are Maori and Pacific patients who request for Maori and Pacific doctors. Can Asian or European doctors communicate effectively in Te Reo the effects/symptoms of treatment ? Define a "competent" doctor now.
@chrischoy9
@chrischoy9 8 жыл бұрын
Grew up in a underprivileged background as well. Based on your assumption that every non-maori/pacific person is automatically branded a racist because of their skin colour. Your assumptions also assumed that the most discriminated group is NZ aka Asians faces no discrimination in NZ. Those assumptions automatically make you sound racist. "Disadvantaged population" -Another word I also hear. Ever heard of Chinese gold miners in NZ? They were discriminated by early European settlers and how do they earn respect? By simply working harder. The current system with MOST NOT ALL Maori/Pacific students are whining their way into a shortcut rather than being competitive. The most plain legalised racism: Giving a degree to someone with a lesser qualification due to their skin colour. How is that any different to racial segregation/maori supremacy? Only ignorant people won't know affirmative action is no different to a National Front for maori/poly. Does not having Affirmative action mean no Maori/Polynesians will graduate as doctors? No, it in fact encourages them to be more competitive rather than "incompetent" doctors who got a C- average vs A+ average for other grads. Doubt underprivileged maori/pacific community would choose a doctor who knows 50-55% of their stuff rather than one who knows 90+.
@wayneamituanai7278
@wayneamituanai7278 8 жыл бұрын
+chrischoy9 Just because you assumed that I made those assumptions doesn’t necessarily mean that I made those assumptions. You are totally missing the point of my argument.I am basically saying this: Affirmative action in relation to the Medical and Health Sciences is to bridge the health disparities and inequalities between Maori/Pacific and Non-Maori populations. Maori and Pacific have the highest rates of disease and have the poorest health outcomes (look at the stats). Having more Maori and Pacific doctors will reduce these health inequities (want me to explain, sure I would love to educate you).I do not know why affirmative action is implemented into other faculties and I have specifically referred to the Medical and Health Sciences in my previous comment. And if you are inferring that affirmative action in the Medical and Health Sciences is institutionalized racism then you are basically denying Maori and Pacific people their right to better health outcomes. Who's racist now? Only ignorant people won’t ever see the bigger picture and are confined to their own pre-conceived beliefs. If Asian/Indians or any other ethnic group had the highest rates of disease/poor health then of course the government would make a commitment to level the playing field through affirmative action. But they don't have the worst health outcomes which is great because I would never wish that upon any population. Finally, could you stop with the “stupid Maori/P.I doctor” generalizations because you have no evidence to back that up, again you are one who sounds racist here. There is no such thing as an "incompetent doctor", have you ever heard of a practicing medical license? You either have one or you don't ! So I doubt the Medical Council will employ incompetent doctors in the first place because nobody who knows 55% of their stuff would pass those vigorous board exams.
@chrischoy9
@chrischoy9 8 жыл бұрын
Wayne Amituanai That is a very pro-Maori/Pacific-centric view. I can easily tell you're not the type of person who has even been to uni (by your use of American English and your attitude in doing bare-minimum). If I showed what you've just justified to one of my close hard working Pacific/Maori friends, they would be disgusted as much as I am. You can justify all you want, you can twist your justification and make Hitler non-racist, you can depict ISIS as a civilised human rights group, it's not hard. Anyone can do it, but ultimately, it sounds illogical which is what you're doing. I don't view Affirmative action as "racist" for manual labour jobs that don't require much experience, but denying someone getting a A from graduating in favour is someone with a C rather than someone more QUALIFIED due to their RACE/ETHNICITY is ultimately RACISM. -Dictionary definition of racism. If language barrier is a problem, they can give a double weighting on people who studied Maori. I don't see a problem in that as long as everyone has the same equal rights on a fair playing ground.
@wayneamituanai7278
@wayneamituanai7278 8 жыл бұрын
I am having an online argument with a cartoon avatar, do you think I care If KZfaq autocorrects my punctuation and grammar into American English. And of course I would give you my bare minimum because you are not worth my effort. Funny you say that your Maori/Pacific friends would be disgusted with what I have just said when all the hardworking Maori/Pacific researchers are the ones who are perpetuating these justifications in the first place. And now you want to associate "hard working" with Maori and Pacific people when you just generalised them as incompetent. Language barriers are ONE of the problems. There you go again being ignorant, trying to recommend "quick fix" interventions. But yeah, nothing further because you are entitled to your opinion and your facts so rant off all you want.
