Tackling Wet Dry Lane Conditions -

It's #MoMonday!
Let's talk wet/dry lane conditions. We've all been there, miss in and the ball hits flat, miss out and the ball goes through the face. Mo walks you through how to recognize the situation and how to properly adjust and adapt to the transition. With the new USBC rules no longer requiring 3 units of oil on the outside, wet/dry conditions will become more common during competition.

Same to me. I have only been out 4 years and I am struggling now. Part of it is getting back into the rhythm and getting my timing down, but the other is how they are oiling the lanes. From my local alley (one that I have never bowled at previously) it seems to be just like what MO is saying. I try to stand 20 or deeper and throw to 15 but it wont face up. Even if I straighten my line and throw 15 it likes to push a lot, and if you get it in, it doesn't try to hook until the last 10 feet. Tonight I think I finally learned to play the outside standing about 8 and throwing at 5. Then keep chasing left just barely when it starts to face up too hard.

@@tlalexander3 in my experience with house shot at the places I bowl at its best to a little more up the back of the ball since the outside of the lane hooks so much. Helps me control the backends. ( im a two hander at a more high friction house)

This is an awesome video! Love the way he showed the pin pattern on the ball and how you can expect it to react. I am left-handed so I don't have to deal with this condition change like righties, but this was still very helpful. I'm trying to learn the technical aspects of bowling balls so when I go to the pro shop and they start spewing all that stuff, I will actually understand some of it.

That is sad that USBC says you don't have to oil the outside yet years ago the ABC said oil had to be applied all the way across the lanes. Glenn Allison bowled a 900 with a yellow dot and had the score rejected and now USBC has approved multiple 900's and 300's are so common place most centers don't even post a list of honor scores. One center that closed had an electronic board the listed the honor scores, a lot of those were on wood lanes also.

My pro shop told me I'll encounter dry conditions more than oily in my area. This has been my experience with playing on several leagues. I now own a Brunswick rhino and a twist drilled for dry conditions. Hell just go practice with me on any facility on dollar day and you will see that they dont oil daily. Only 1 league I play on uses enough oil that I can use my Radical Intel for 1 to 2 games, told them I hope they dont change the oil pattern.

I encountered this scenario last night at my league. I'm low ball speed player 15mph. Was using vintage vapor zone asymmetrical ball with pin up layout and polish surface. Could not control the ball at all. Kept taking off on me. Then if I moved too far left to stay out of the dry my ball skated on the heavy oiled middle and kept leaving 10 pins or sometimes a 2 pin. Struggled to make it back to the pocket

S'Funny, at the house I bowl at the outside has NOTHING but oil. But yeah a lot of other houses, I gotta get real aggressive loft the ball to the arrows right out of the gate in order to get it to hold. Which I don't mind cuz I'm speed dominant but other players get upset at it, understandably.

isnt that the truth, i feel so depressed with bowling right now. i have avg 185-195 for 10 years and right now im 175 because it seems after game 1 im just completely destroyed with bone dry lanes, i have 3 different balls set up to have high, med and low hook depending on the oil that night but this season they all hook and react the same, it doesn't matter what i use or how i surface them i have to throw a massive inside shot from gutter to gutter just to hit pocket. I know a lot of people dont have this problem but with my rev rate i have to completely change the way i throw the ball. Its like learning to bowl all over again

@@brettrobbins2707 the bowling balls are much more aggressive today than they were 10 years ago so that area the lane changes much quicker a hint is to use a different hand position to allow you to play deeper inside on the lane to catch that oil to get to the down dryer Lane position your break point that should help you out a little bit but I understand your frustration

I agree, I'm a 210 average bowler who is now averaging 170's because of the Wet/Dry and quick breakdown of the oil pattern. I can't keep up with the quick changing lane condition. On a 5 man team, by the time I get to bowl, my shot has already changed again. Found out from my buddy who oils the lanes that they are only using 27 mil of oil for 42 feet. I'm not sure what to do. Buy another new ball and have that drilled a specific way for Dry conditions. I was thinking one with less hook like a Brunswick Rhino or Track Tundra just for this crazy HS.

@@frankesposito2229 yeah with the lanes changing every three or four frames the lane conditions change pretty frequently I bought one of those rhinos they hook a ton even with a slip agent on it it's still hooked a lot 27 ml sounds like a lot of oil we put 21 on our lanes and we are loyal 41 feet sounds like you're lanes are getting Cliffted

@@lylebarnard7447 This is what I did tonight. We have a 4 person team on Friday nights. I moved in throwing my strongest ball ( Hammer Scandal Pearl ) one board left of the third arrow (16 to about 9, 7 ). This ball is drilled to start rolling in the mid lane. It hooked nice for the first two games and by the 3rd game I had to switch to the Hammer Web Pearl, which goes a little longer and kicks on the back end. With the Scandal I stood at 34 and moved to 38 the start of game 3, at that point I started to get some over/under so I switched to the Web Pearl and had to move back to 34 and finished the game with 4 strikes in a row. 200, 225, 201. Needless to say tonight is not the competitive night that Wednesday night is, where most of the bowlers have hooks and throw it on the right. We had 2 lefties tonight which helped preserve the lanes a little. I'll know more after Wednesday night if this strategy will work and I can stay on top of the changes.

@@anthonyharrison8855 Last night I was on an atomically Wet/Dry condition. I used my smoothest ball, my DV8 Poison and even it was jumping, which it never does. Right of 7 was dead dry, left of 7 was super flood. So if I missed right of 7, split, but if I missed left of 7, washout, 5-7 or flat 10. Finally in game 2 I pulled out my Widow Spare at 500 grit with a high flare layout and rolled right up 8. The ball rolled early and set and floated to the pocket, totally ignoring the wet dry. Suddenly 6 strikes, with sanded plastic. Sometimes less is more.
