The RAF is a true meritocracy, you won't regret joining up, it set myself up for life of which, could've been a whole lot different & not for the better at that. Training is tough, it's meant to be, they don't suffer fools either, afterall it's a privilege to serve, remember that, i served for nearly 10yrs, it was FANTASTIC.

The RAF will give anyone who becomes a member, a focus and targets in life. I have many friends who were not pilots in the RAF but used the the sports facilities, one was air movements and now a very senior pilot with Virgin, two ex SACs who are captians with Cathay, One a senior captain on A330s with a holiday company, myself 30 a professional pilot, one awkward JT who is now CEO of NHS North. So dont think about it, do it!

I'm interested to know more about the cabin crew rostering. Im assuming if they have worked long haul flights, they would get a couple of days off, then back on another flight, a layover somewhere, then back to the UK followed by another 1-2 days off? (Like civilian cabin crew flying patterns?)

I joined the RAF in 1999. I wish the internet was around then, like it is now. I would have done more research & joined a more adventurous and interesting trade, like this one. I only got a not very informative pamphlet from the careers office & went with what was available.

I was thinking about applying for this but according to the website you only do a year flying followed by a year in the catering/hospitality ground teams. How would it work if you only want the cabin crew role?
@royalairforce
@royalairforce 4 жыл бұрын
Hi You won't only do a year. Postings are normally between 2-4 years, so you'll be in that specific role for at least that amount of time. Also, the role encompasses both sides, so you may switch between the two during your time in service. Or you may spend more time on one than another. It will depend on your own career progression. Hi You can see the practice AST here on the RAF Recruitment website. You can also watch the video explaining what will happen on the day. So…. I’m 33 and I have my AST in the next couple of weeks. I’ve got a few questions. I’m applying for the firefighter role. Am I too old? Are there many people my age joining? Also I have a fiancé and 2 kids that I’d prefer NOT to be far away from after basic training. Are these things that are possible or is it like I’m sent where I’m sent and that’s that?
@royalairforce
@royalairforce 2 жыл бұрын
Hi No, you're not too old, the upper age for entry for that role is 47. We have people across all age ranges apply for all roles. You can give a preference to where you're posted, but it will be the RAF that decides and it will be where you're needed. That could be any station the RAF has in the UK, or elsewhere in the world. We will take your preference into account, but it's not always guaranteed. And it depends on where you currently live as to whether you're near an RAF station you could be posted to. Your family can live with you, there is an option for non-married couples to get accommodation, although you'll need to prove commitment (joint bank account, for example). Or you can travel to your posting weekly/shift pattern too, for example. RAF Recruitment

No, they're not soildiers, they are Royal Air Force personnel performing their peace time military role, air and ground stewards. All RAF personnel also have a designated 'war role'.are trained in basic force protection to defend an installation and assessts in time of war. Garry H, ex RAF.

I served as a steward, early eighties. Believe me, we where trained in combat roles, and trained every six months, we also trained up, in fire fighting duties and security of bases. The work, was demanding at times. But it was good, fun.The job, put me in good stead, for a long and successful second career in the emergency services. Happily retired at 53 years of age.
