Incredible chemistry between them at that moment in time. Two of the very best of the rock era...if not the best. Giants and legends...no doubt. No wonder Rainbow was so exceptional. They sound like brothers here....so aligned. So true...you cannot lose with a Blackmore and Dio on your side.

Too bad Richie wanted the band to become Foreigner 2.0. To this day there are people who confuse "Cold As Ice" and "Stone Cold".

What an incredible treat. Thanks for sharing! I have so much respect and admiration for both of these amazing musicians. They stand head and shoulders above many of their peers and, without a doubt, eclipse most of the talent out there today. It’s wonderful hearing them laugh and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Ritchie once said that RJD was one of the few people who could make him laugh, and hearing him in such a good mood, laughing, joking, and enjoying himself is wonderful. I love hearing him speak, because you’d almost never imagine that this soft-spoken, intelligent, seemingly proper English gentlemen would be responsible for producing some of the loudest, in-your-face hard rock and often displaying wild stage antics. And I simply adore RJD. His singing voice, charisma, and showmanship were unparalleled, and he was a kind and generous human being, who was loved by so many. It’s unfortunate that their relationship soured, but these things happen when two strong-willed, opinionated, controlling, and perfectionist personalities are put together. And it certainly doesn’t help when outside forces are trying to impose their will and are stirring the pot. Much has been said about Blackmore possessing a big ego, being difficult, and chewing up and spitting out those with whom he worked, but the man was incredibly serious and disciplined about his art and had no tolerance for those who didn’t put in the same effort. Some said that RJD was also difficult, but these gentlemen earned the right to demand focus, seriousness, and a hard work ethic from those around them. The age of Blackmore/Dio was the absolute best and produced some exceptional music.

I could listen to these two for hours. They are hilarious! They could've been a comedy duo. I guess in some ways they were.

Despite falling out... Ronnie and Ritchie had a lot in common - classical background, love of the medieval and the same very dry sense of humour.

Big personalities. It's no surprise they were stand-offish with each other at first when Elf and DP toured together. They are/were the kinds of guys to not take shit from anyone, Dio even more so being a scrappy little 5 foot tall New York Italian.

RJD never had any formal singing lessons, and as he said in one interview, - that he had the intelligence to use his talent. Amazing voice. Amazing soul. RIP

Never heard Ritchie laughing that much and that intensive while Ronnie is talking about 16th Century Greensleeves. This is great !!!!!

Paying compliments to RJD, too. Blackmore was fkn jolly and relieved to be done with Deep Purple and starting a new sound with a singer he finally felt was on his own level of capability.

The band on the first Rainbow lp was basically Elf. Craig Gruber on bass, Mickey Lee Soule on keys, Gary Driscoll on drums. Ritchie wanted to fire Gary Driscoll and find a new drummer, so sneakily began auditioning new drummers. Gruber and Soule were against Driscoll being fired, so they quit over it. Jimmy Bain didn't play bass on the 1st lp, Craig Gruber did.

I'm sorry, Elonna, but your information is ... faulty. After the first album was finished, Blackmore fired bass player Craig Gruber two days later. The drummer lasted a little while longer, then he was fired. Mickey Lee Soule was the last to be dismissed. None of them "quit." You'd be out of your mind to walk away from a potential money-maker like Ritchie Blackmore after you'd been in a (good) but very poor selling band that had been dropped from Epic, and picked up by DP's management's label, Oyster, and having been living on a day to day basis money-wise. Blackmore wanted bigger names in his band. Personally, except for Soule, the first album had the best-sounding group. Driscoll had a drumming style somewhat like Ian Paice's. The first album is the only one pre-Glover that had a 'bottom' to it - for some reason the mixes for RISING and LONG LIVE were very toppy-sounding. I'm sure Dio liked his old band members and hated to see them fired per se, but he was no fool. Blackmore was his big chance for mass exposure. And as a musician he knew that Carey and Stone were miles above Soule's capabilities.

I was going by what Craig Gruber said himself in an interview. Colin Hart (in his book A Hart Life) said Craig was fired for having contempt for Ritchie and not hiding it. Which didn't surprise me, from what Craig said in the interview! He was given a second chance to play bass in Rainbow (for LLRR, I think), but responded to Ritchie telling him to play like Roger by saying "So get Roger then". According to Craig Gruber, during that time frame (late '70s) he was making good money as a session musician in LA and he knew his rights. So, he wasn't starving or desperate. Jimmy Bain wasn't a bigger name or better bassist, he was someone who kept his mouth shut and got messed up with drugs. Ditto for Carey. I believe what Colin Hart had to say, that Blackmore wasn't interested in "big names" because he didn't want competing egos. He also hated people knowing their rights and sticking up for themselves. Cozy Powell was an exception.

I don't believe the testimony in Hart's book - too many other books and magazine articles/interviews contradict it.
