Ray congrats on your recent move and new business. We have just put to bed our 7 day business and closed it at end of a seven year lease. We had very little control over costs as it was a franchise format. I really hope you have purchased the building or plans to eventually do so. Keep control of all your actual costs, that way your integrity will be kept intact. Work only a set amount each day, including keeping up with the books and spending quality time with your family. Don't short change the family, They are priority one. Supervise an apprentice or two, do not let your skills and your positive attitude go to waste.

I agree with you 100%. I quit working for a shop that was screwing people. I worked the office and did oil changes, tire rotations and a few other small things. Im far from being a master mechanic. More like a shade tree. The owner of the shop was out for nothing but money . He would quote a customer and say they wanted life time warranty parts. Well he would buy the cheap one year parts but charge for the expensive ones. He had a contract with a company that transported disabled and senior citizens. They stayed on top of all the preventative maintenance along with repairs. He would charge them 80 buck for a oil lube and filter package. At the most he would change the filter and top off the washer fluid. I seen him pull some shit. I could not continue to work for someone who was screwing people over. I have lived whats considered in poverty level most of my adult years and know what its like to struggle. I could look these people in the eyes when they came to pick up their cars. His business went under about 2 yrs later. I do have a friend who has his own shop that I met when I sold him parts from the salvage yard I worked at. He is honest, works with people, very good at what he does and even teaches the mechanics class at one of the colleges. He has helped me out in a bind when I get stumped working on my cars.

A little tip on U-Joint, wrap some electrical tape around the joint so that it doesn't fall over on you in tight places. It still allows the joint to swivel, but makes it much easier to get into places like this. A trick I learned removing the upper transmission bolts using 36"' long extensions.

Hey Ray. This video reminds me of my very first mechanical undertaking. I had a 72 Plymouth Satellite when I was 16yo. This was in the years of the mullet. Starter went bad. I didn't have the money to get it expertly repaired by a professional. And one of my buddies claimed "It would be easy" and we could do it. It was September in good ole Pine-ellis country... and it was hot. So we jacked er up and after emptying half the tool box under the car, got the old one off. Then realized we had the wrong starter. Had to drive around to 3 stores to find the right one. Upon installation of said unit...I think it took the two of us 3 hours to get the top bolt in. After all we only had a cheap set of craftsmans...no wobbly bits...like one extension...and had no clue how to to be resourceful. Entire job took about 6 hours. But we were so dang proud when the car fired up... Thanks for all that you do Ray. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself with us.

I noticed issues like you described when I was in my 20s. The problem has progressed over time and affects both shoulders, neck, throat, arms, and hands. The cause is several collapsed discs in my neck (no trauma or accidents to cause them). Any work I do at (or above) head level becomes extremely uncomfortable after a minute or two from the neck all the way to my hands. I have not yet had to change my line of work but this definitely has made the job a lot harder as the years have gone by. I have to slow down and very deliberately do my work so that I can continue to resist item gravity. I find myself working from the top down rather than the bottom up when possible.

@@boggy7665 yes I think so. Even though we call it a mag switch. So "m" would make more sense. But birg warner calls a different terminal the m terminal. Alot of larger diesel engine starters have that terminal labeled as the s terminal though. Borg Warner, Delco Remy (though they are the same company now). I think prestolite. Look at a diagram for a Delco 50mt, it will have that labeled as the s terminal. I know that is way more information than you asked for... But hey it's the internet where everyone is an expert! Have a good day

The dedication to get up in the middle of the night just to find out it was all for nothing! We really appreciate the effort you put in! It was fun to see that whole clip too. It could have easily been summed up as "i thought i lost the rest of the footage, so i went to the shop at midnight to find that I had the footage the whole time", but we get to see the hard work you put in for ourselves.

I remember we had this Chevy flatbed with a 400 in it. It wouldn't start one morning, we're all standing out there looking at it, when I say "Have you checked the cables?". I grabbed that solid red positive cable and gave it a tug to see if the connector was loose. That red cable came loose right at the connector. It had rotted in half and there was nothing but corrosion crud left inside that red insulation. I about fell down when I pulled it, not expecting the thing to just come right apart.

466k subscribers - on to the next milestone. I think the variety of content in the workshop and back on your property makes for a more rounded picture of what you do. Sure its great seeing one engine bay after another - and believe you me I have seen lots, because I like them - but the new stuff is more attractive. Which is fortunate because you had little choice I guess. More power to you and the family.

15 years ago a friend started an ambulance service with a used fleet. Can’t tell you how many repairs I had to make from the gravel. We saved money and time by doing what needed to be done and in a few years had an inside shop which could hold 8 ambulances and two side bays for smaller vehicles. I was wrenching on a unit outside and the new guy asked why I did t bring it inside first. Old habits die hard.

I remember one time I had to use several extensions to run them out to the front of the engine just to get onto a starter bolt and get the ratchet on at the same time. You need to keep at least one entrance mat that you can take out to the parking lot and lay on the ground to protect your entire body from the rocks when you have to lay on the ground and makes it easier to slide under, around, and out from under a vehicle.

Your exciter wire is traditionally the crank wire. That starter terminal was marked with a C for many years. The other small terminal was marked R for resistor to indicate that it bypassed the ballast resistor wired into a points and condenser distributor ignition system. C had a 5/16 wrench size nut and the other an 11/32 size nut. (sorry, I've forgotten the bolt and pitch size)

I have probably installed a dozen starters in my life...One was just like this (close) in my 2000 V-10 Excursion which had caught on fire when my dad owned it causing the starter to get a little cooked. I cringed as you loosened the last bolt cuz those starters are heavy and will crush your Chiclets (teeth) if yer not careful. Brings back memories....starters used to be easier to get to. I enjoy working with tools...rebuilt a few Baja Bug engines...learned a LOT doing that....Met my wife installing a new clutch in her 79 toyota celica....took me 90 mins....never done one....was easy...she thot I was amazing.
