Episode 5 - Rust Issues
Onto the left side!! The right side floors and sills were finished in between filming so in this episode we tackle some rusty (no surprise there!) structural parts of the body on the left side. We're carrying these repairs now as we have more access without the floors in place. We made the replacement parts from sheet metal by hitting it with a hammer and dolly

Good afternoon Jeff, I do enjoy your metal work. Very tidy and excellent panel fitment. I also appreciate the fact that with skill and talent despite the lack of a ship full of high dollar equipment. You take care and stay healthy. Good luck.

Thanks, there are a few more videos ahead, plenty of metal work was needed on the shell, at the moment we are buttoning up some ends and start prepping for paint

Thanks, one of the reasons that I'm making these videos is to help other restorers, just like I follow other's channels :) One tip I can give is that if an area looks weak, its probably worse undeneath. Niente di che :)

RJ-quick question please. what is the name of the die you use to roll back the edges and provide rigidity in a panel? BTW-great section on one of your clips that shows how to make a custom die for a reinforcing panel.

Steve Wuertz do you mean the tool showed at 3:40? That is called a bender.
@stevewuertz3598

RJ-I have since figured it out. It was from an earlier video-i think its a dimpled die-puts an edge to a stamped hole

The generic term is tool and die or forming die to be used in a press

That was my plan in the beginning but I'm going for a more original look since its not a real GTA (they are super rare and very expensive) I'm going for a stock look with better wheels, no bumpers and a little mo power :)

Very well made, well done! I will need to do some of those repairs on my car 😆 Are your rear suspension turrets ok?

Thanks for the comment! The rear turrets look ok they were sand blasted and painted before so they aren't hiding anything :)

Nice work on the panels! What tools and techniques are you using?
@raisingjunior6389
@raisingjunior6389 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks,we used a combination of hammers, dollies and chisels and our homemade bender, depending on the piece. My dad did most of the tricky lines, he keeps the rotten piece to compare the depths of the pressings

Yeah, it was bad, but most Gt's in damp countries end up like this after years or driving in the rain!

Raising Junior I think it was wrecked sometime in the late 90’s or early 2000’s since the tires were made in 1997 and not much wear on the tires. Then there it sat under the trees with a few other Alfa’s until a few years ago. It’ll need the floors and all layers of the sills plus the nose is rusty the right rear fender is probably smashed beyond saving the left rear fender is savable with some straightening and a new trunk floor.

Please show more of the panel forming techniques. When i weld panels it is never so nice, how do you do it
@raisingjunior6389
@raisingjunior6389 5 жыл бұрын
By now we are almost done making panels, there's just a few patches left to make, but we can feature those. My welding isn't the best, but a few tips are clean the metal well from any paint and rust, possibly use a Gas mix instead of normal CO2 gas and use the right current and wire feed, don't be afraid to use a high wire speed, I used to think slow is better but many times its not the case. Its more difficult to weld on old metal, it tends to melt quicker leaving a hole
@jaymyers6452
@jaymyers6452 5 жыл бұрын
@@raisingjunior6389 yes the most common problem i have is that it burns through making a hole and then i sit there filling it in with the welder. I use 0.8 wire with c02, maybey this is my problem
@raisingjunior6389
@raisingjunior6389 5 жыл бұрын
@@jaymyers6452 You could try 0.6 wire, i never tried it but since its thinner you'll need less current to melt it. I try on scrap pieces to set up the welder before working on the actual piece
