One of Judaism's greatest sages, Rambam (Maimonides) offers us a deeply meaningful insight into the nature of the Seder night. In showing us the difference between how we are supposed to understand Seder night first as children and then as adults, he teaches us a crucial lesson which we can all apply in our daily life. Take a break from the pre-Pesach preparation to watch this 25-minute shiur. Wishing you all a Chag kasher v'sameach!

the rabbis are far worse than any Pharoah. Keeping their own in spiritual bondage for 2000 years now. They never had any right to lord it over an anthill, after the Temple was destroyed. When did Yahweh talk to them and tell them to usurp the priesthood, and tell them to tell their victims the deed was now the thing?

Excellent message on Rambams teaching. In spite of facing different kinds of difficulties he wrote an extradinay wisdom oriented teachings in the 11th century that is remembered even today. As the Rabbi Sacks said and quoted him about the two kinds of freedoms. One physical and the other mental.The 40 years long journey is about physical ( Egypt to the promised land and the second is entering into it). Great teaching to the entire human race. The 'eye-opener' for me, as a Christian, is how Judaism may encapsulate Process Theology, at the very core of its belief. If I read Rabbi Sacks correctly, he would be able to claim, with any member of the SEA OF FAITH NETWORK, that "religion is a human creation", precisely because - under the guidance of God's 'ruach', our FREEDOM (God's greatest gift to us) has been preserved, as we have been led from polytheism to belief in the One God; so that, whilst God doesn't change, our conception of Him does; under the vast number of influences open to us: not least, science. British Judaism is so fortunate to have Rabbi Sacks as one of its leading Teachers. God bless him.

God's scripture is not just mere stories but it offers the human race great understanding on who God is and what is expected from God. Although today much of the world believes in a Universal God many use scripture for self benefit and not really for the benefit of God's creation. The commandments Moses gave to His people should be understood for the benefit of creation. We need to change this fractured world but we cannot ignore God's word. Unfortunately man has divided God's word with "Religion" but God can not be divided. The hour has come for the human race to do the Will of God and not the will of Religion. The stereo type thinking has to change.

Amazing! Actually, I was always wondering - Why, according to the Rambam who downplays miracles, was commanded by G-d initially at the burning bush to "prove" through three miracles that he is the messenger from G-d? Thank you Rabbi Sacks - my question is answered. It's because the Jews at that time as slaves in Egypt were at that level that miracles were important and a valid proof. Once again... wonderful class.

because the Rambam is a Talmudic liar . The rabbis had no Gdgiven right to lord it over an antmound after the Temple desolation and a defunct priesthood. These people deny miracles. You question is very good and thought provoking and exposes the Rambam as a liar who has enslaved his victims for 900 years. He is far worse than any Pharaoh who came before. Sacks' explanation is another sneaky excuse to defend his Talmudic idol Rambam.

Excellent discourse and one of the best that I've heard to date. In particular, though he did not point to the reality that (nearly) every "problem" is in fact an opportunity, he dwelt on "Mathil bi-gnut u mesayem b'shevakh" "מתחיל בגנות ומסיים בשבח" alluding to that reality - the reality of the need to peel away the cloaking ("klipot") that conceal the opportunity that is within and inherent in what superficially presents as a "problem". It is a pleasure to listen to the wisdom of Rabbi Sacks who, in sharp contrast to the Hareidim (who at worst deny the right of the State of Israel and of Jews to self-determination and freedom or at best merely pay lip service to the State of Israel and to Jewish self-determination but concurrently reject the inclusion of the Israeli flag and celebration of the existence of the State of Israel on its independence day or sounding of its National Anthem in their synagogues), points directly and favorably to the State of Israel and its fundamental importance in his conclusion to his discourse.

He also says the speaking about the miracles is to get the children excited. But the RaMBaM explicitly mentions (even emphasises) the miracles in 7:1, i.e. *not* specifically for the children! I had a start when the Rabbi said it is a long way from being a slave to becoming a human being. I think the basic premise we ought to start with is that slaves have been human beings all along, they are just denied the respect due them as human beings... human beings degraded as they may have been by being forced to do unsalaried demeaning work, without being given freedom to live as they chose in ways that could improve their lot.

Wonderful class as usual... just one correction. The Rambam was not supported by his brother David. Actually, the Rambam especially in his commentary to the Mishnah is vehemently opposed to the Yisacher and Zevulun relationship - where one person supports the other. However, as evident from one of his letters it is clear that it was a financial partnership - the Rambam invested money in the jewelry business. And the reason the Rambam became a doctor after the drowning of his brother and loss of his investment was because he refused to take a salary as a practicing rabbi. Clearly, the Rambam could have been hired as a rabbi. The Rambam "practiced what he preached," and earned a living through a profession.

Pearl Shifer observe what you find meaningful, cutting up little animals to make the gods happy is not meaningful anymore Baal is a title used in the Bible which could refer to any local god. Literally the word simply means “master” or “lord” and consequently every local tribe would have their own “Baal.” While the ancient Israelites were on their way from Egypt to the promised land (and after they arrived) they were constantly looking for ways to get into Baal's good books - but exactly why Baal was such an attractive deity for the ancient Israelites is a bit of a puzzle. They had ample evidence of the existence of God as he had killed thousands of them personally while they were on their way to the promised land and after they arrived. Oh. Ahh, yes I see.
@bell1095
@bell1095 6 жыл бұрын
Reporter You got it wrong. Cuting little animals does not make god happy, but only the one who brings the animal for his (!) korban. God does not need the temple sacrifications nor prayers, said already Prophet Jermijahu. Torat Kohanim as well as the whole temple cult was a way to keep jews off from „free“ idolatry as exerted about the golden calf. The message of sinai failed entirely, then as today.

First thing is I do respect Rabbi Sacks. 2nd thing, what is it with the monotheistic religions that they don't even seem to understand their own religion, why would muslims be telling Jews to convert, go to exile or be killed, both Israel and Islam are branches of Abraham and God said he made a covenant with Abraham. If he made a covenant with Abraham then he made it with all descendants of Abraham, it just doesn't make sense, what is it with people that they cant stop arguing or at least try and understand a bit of their own history.

0:15 Isn't it Guide OF the Perplexed? 3:53 Hmm. But aren't 'miracles' just 'laws of nature' which are not perceptible to the 'materialist' of 'conventional' reality? 4:24 They say: 'So men come into this world with all the right hardware for the job, but puberty sets dads-to-be down the wrong path for milk production. When a man does lactate (and yes, it happens) it is almost always a symptom of an underlying medical problem (or thanks to injections of estrogen and prolactin, which come with a slew of side effects).' - 'Since your brain is wired to care for a newborn, other things may trigger the let down reflex. If you baby cries, or if you hear any baby cry, your milk may let down in response. If you go too long without nursing and your breasts get too full, your let down reflex may trigger to relieve the pressure.' - So he must have been so affected by the cries of his newborn, which must have become more and more frantic as time progressed, that the crying increased the estrogen and prolactin. But really, he shouldn't have had to 'afford' a wet-nurse. Surely all the new mothers in the area could have helped out? The screams of a starving new born would have triggered the let-down reflex in all mothers for a 100 mile radius! They'd have been queuing up at the door! No breastfeeding mother would be able to handle the thought of a newborn starving to death through unavailability of milk. So there has to be another explanation other than "couldn't afford a wetnurse". Was he in a desolate place very far from human habitation? 4:54 It's probably not a story about wisdom or miracles or health insurance, but rather a story to remind the men as to the nitty gritty of what breast are for. Interestingly, in modern society in first world nations, many men worship the breasts but all hell breaks loose if women breastfeed in public. Even women hate it! The poor breast has become the vessel of the sillicon implant. And Rabbi Tovia states that the Barbie doll doesn't represent 'idolatry'. I BEG TO DIFFER! 5:10 Well no. There's nothing wrong with us as such. It just shows that the man was going to die of grief from the screams of the newborn and that his body 'compensated'. The human body HAS miraculous propensities. 5:16 The 'supernatural'/'natural' divide; I CAN'T buy into that Rabbi. I see the pragmatic 'materialist' versus the 'non-materialist'. 'CONVENTIONAL' reality versus ULTIMATE reality. He that ALWAYS has to 'know' versus he that is open to the unknown. 6:16 Well no Rabbi. Moses didn't 'perform'! God performed! 6:40 Of course they're not! They're just PRACTICAL solutions! Specially when it comes to breatfeeding newborns.

The fallacy at the end is that it's not what God does for us but what we do for God. (????) This is the opposite of the Message of the Scriptures. Human nature cannot be changed by Man. Man requires the New Birth. The Spirit of God must intervene in the heart of People for there to be change.

I have no idea what scriptures you have been reading, but the Torah is clear we are to serve G-D, more so for Jews who are Hashem's partners in the world. And it is not a silent partnership. Rabbi Sacks is correct. It is about what we do.

Ze’ev Herzog : This is what archaeologists have learned from their excavations in the Land of Israel: the Israelites were never in Egypt, did not wander in the desert, did not conquer the land in a military campaign and did not pass it on to the 12 tribes of Israel. Perhaps even harder to swallow is the fact that the united regional power, was at most a small tribal kingdom. And it will come as an unpleasant shock to many that the God of Israel, Jehovah, had a female consort and that the early Israelite religion adopted monotheism only in the waning period of the monarchy and not at Mount Sinai. Most of those who are engaged in scientific work in the interlocking spheres of the Bible, archaeology and the history of the Jewish people - and who once went into the field looking for proof to corroborate the Bible story - now agree that the historic events relating to the stages of the Jewish people’s emergence are radically different from what that story tells eh...

The RAMBAM of Blessed Memory was undoubtedly a Mekubal (Kabbalist)...His Moreh Nevukhim (Guide for the Perplexed) is entirely kabbalistic and this is why Academics and Rabbis who are not initiated in this G-dly Wisdom (Kabbalah) are completely lost and clueless as to what he’s describing in His G-dly Sefer (Book). Maimonides, in one of his 13 foundations, claimed the time for Messiah should not be contemplated or calculations carried out. He was referring to the edict of Sanhedrin 97B, which curses those Jews who did that sort of thing and tried to figure out Daniel's Messianic prophecy in chapter 9 of Daniel . Yet he and Rashi did the exact same things the Talmudic sages warned again.@@janishart5128

One celebrate Pesach according to the Scriptures. Not man made traditions. For Yahweh looks to the HEART and its intent. There is no longer a physical temple, for WE are IN Yeshua HaMoshiach, are the "living stone being built up by Yahweh's hand and not by "man". (Not with bricks). Yeshua is our High Priest and we his "Priesthood", who obey the " Commandments of Yahweh" and follow Yeshua who embodied fully the "WORD" commandments/teachings and instructions of Yahweh (Avinu) within him. That which was of the "letter" has been "transferred spiritually". For we now "walk" not in the Flesh, but by the "SPIRIT".

@@BertGraef: Your 'non-question' doesn't make sense. Why would the rabbis claim that the "Jewish people are the Messiah", when that is exactly NOT what the Tanach teaches??!! There is only ONE Messiah who will arrive in the Messianic Era, and he will be heralded by Eliyahu (Elijah). BTW, we are NOT "you people", thank you very much!! How would you Christians like it if Jews started calling you "you people"?! It's pretty rude! "World peace", will arrive, as stated (prophesied, actually) in Tanach, in the Messianic Era when the Jewish Messiah arrives and brings the 3rd Temple to Jerusalem. The Messiah will NOT be 'divine', but will be an ordinary man, although he will be a very righteous man, well-versed in Tanach, and he will NOT be 'saving anyone from their sins', as this is NOT his task! PLEASE DO THE RESEARCH, learn from the Orthodox rabbis, and STAY TUNED - Moshiach and world peace are coming - the way the world is, we expect him at any time! You don't know these answers because you have been listening to false, pagan Christianity all your life (as MANY, MANY of us have!) and you refuse to learn God's ACTUAL Truth! It would be very helpful for you to listen to some of the Tenak Talk videos, and/or those by Rabbi Tovia Singer of Outreach Judaism, or Rabbi Michael Skobac of Jews for Judaism - they have videos on these subjects. Also Rabbi Singer's books (Let's Get Biblical - Why Doesn't Judaism Accept the Christian Messiah?) would be a great help to you, as would purchasing a copy of the Hebrew scriptures (called "TANACH" - Torah, Prophets and Writings, i.e. Psalms, Proverbs, etc.), so you can see for yourself what God ACTUALLY said to us.

There were Jews who did great miracles, mightier than Moses ever did. Joshua chapter 10 proves it . Who the hell does Rambam think he is, discounting and denying miracles? Just another Sadducee in disguise. The Rambam discounted divine miracles just to downplay them so he and the sages of Talmud could make their Talmud APPEAR more authoritative than the written Torah of Moses and the words of the prophets. Talmud Judaism is a total sham and a disgrace, not only to the Jew who doesn't know better, but an affront to G-d almighty. The weekly 10 man debating society is a total screwup.

been slaves to Talmudic error for 2000 years. Admit it. Why would anyone demote Daniel to non prophet status, when his writings are full of incredible and sublime prophecies. Including the greatest prophecy of all, found in Daniel 9, and the revealed time of Messiahs coming. Why was there a curse placed on this prophecy? Sanhedrin 97B along with the farcical explanation found in Megillah 2a? Why? Even the Sages admitted that the time for Messiah had come and gone after the temple destruction. How did they know this? They also knew that the power of the Sanhedrin to execute the death sentence had been taken from them by Rome in the time of Christ, fulfilling Jacobs prophecy to his son Judah in Genesis 49:10.
