I made a backpack for my girlfriend and ended up making something very similar to a Japanese Randoseru bag!
I love the result despite many small errors along the way.
Made with 1,4mm thick vegetable tanned leather, dyed with Fiebing's Oil dye in walnut and hand stitched.
Do let me know what you think in the comments =)

I have been making leather products for the past 7 months, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.
As always, do let me know what you think of this creation and this video. If you have any tips or comments about the techniques used, please let me know by dropping a comment below this video :)
Thanks for watching!

Hi James, the bag is beautiful. I have one thing to add about the process, be careful when you use glues , it is better to do it in open spaces and wearing some protection.My partner woks in a hospital specialised in treating people with cancer and the amount of patients that come to it who have being in contact with glues in a daily basis is huge so just be more conscious about you dealing with those kind of products.

Thanks a ton James for your message :) I would have liked not to make the very silly mistake of forgetting about the clasps in order to get the clean front flap I was hoping for initially... But at the same time I agree with you that it could have looked a bit too simple without these!

Beautiful bag. You really have a talent for this. I’m enjoying watching your videos so much. I’ve been doing leatherwork for a few years but you absolutely never stop learning or being inspired - so thank you for that. As far as shoe polish: I’ve seen and heard of old timers using shoe polish and using it regularly. So if I was you and it was achieving a look you want - keep it up. After all it WAS designed FOR leather. 👍🤗

Thank you Choya, i'm glad you're enjoying the videos :) yes i completely agree about the shoe polish: I've got a lot of questions about it from people who are surprised to see it used like this and every time i come back to "it was made for leather so it should work in theory"

Shoe polish is not recommended for use on veg tanned leather, tho as it causes the grain to tighten and crack with flexation. Okay with chrome tanned because that process tightens the fibers initially.

Just found you, wonderful bag! I appreciate that you don't pretend that we always get it right the first time, everything takes Doing before we perfect a new design. As for stitching, I too like a single thread length and went through agonies using the traditional method of piercing the thread with the needle to hold it in place, until....I found Weaver Leathercraft, here on KZfaq. He has very quick and useful vids on everything, but the first time I saw him explain how he stitches, well, it was a moment. IT's traditional except that he does not pierce the thread but chokes up on it as much as he can, you can play it out as you need it. Another amazing deal was that instead of going through with one needle, then the other and testing to make sure you haven't snagged the first thread, etc., he puts one needle in half way, puts the other in, pulls down slightly on both to make a vertical X, grab the sharp ends and pull. No pierced thread, and so much quicker, cuts sewing time by at least a third. Check out his channel, it's amazing, he's saved me from making mistakes on expensive leather. Karen

@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karen, I will definitely g check him out :) I find that, using quite thick thread and needles, I can't get both needles through the holes comfortably enough to use the vertical X trick.

Brilliant project! I love the design and your sharing of your thoughts as you work through. You might consider gluing the seams before you stitch and getting the holes aligned during gluing with several needles every 5-10 stitch holes. That can save a lot of pain in the stitching process.

I like all the lessons learned in this project. Now if I can just remember for my own projects. Where the thinner leather was stitched to the straps, I might have stitched across the thinner piece to make a square. This makes it a decoration instead of a 'funny bulge'. Of course, it also puts more stitches on a stress point. Very nice finish on leather. I think that shoe polish worked well.

An important consideration for leather workers is the glue element to construction. We all prefer that natural leather smell to industrial glue. There are vegetable based substitutes that are less harsh on the nose.

@@JamesBerry I was also a little hesitant at first too. Tested it out on a small sample first. After three days all I could smell was the leather. There are many ways of treating leather: you can even put it out in the sun and give it a suntan to darken it. Oil can be applied in all sorts of fashions depending on the leather, it's intended purpose, and the desired appearance. One favorite technique is to darken the leather using no dye at all, but by applying heavy oil. Purity is important though because certain chemicals can break down the leather in time. A popular mix today is neatsfoot oil with beeswax emulsified into it. You have employed techniques I have not tried, but the amount of oil that went into the project leather was not excessive for this leather and intention. The backpack will last a very long time with that much oil in it. I have soaked some projects in neatsfoot oil and been disappointed with the look, then come back and looked at the piece 10 years later and it has a rich waxy amber patina and is still as good as new.

It looks great. Our 'mistakes' are usually only visible to us makers that have the original vision. Now I can't excuse a crooked stitching line, which happens WAY to often for my tastes. You did a fantastic job. I remember sitting on my couch hand stitching with the tv on. I appreciate how you discuss your expectations as well as your disappointments in design and execution. Sometimes we have to make changes mid-flight. One suggestion is I'd think if you'd did a square-foot test of your coloring and finishing process from start to finish, you would have felt much more positive about it throughout the entire project.

@gijsbo2000
@gijsbo2000 10 ай бұрын
@@JamesBerry You need very little of the Saphir. So over the longer term, it is not that much more expensive than cheaper shoe polishes. A thing with shoe polish sometimes can be that the pigments rub off on clothing. Saphir has developed its “Canadian” line of products for leather objects that are often worn on or sitting on textiles. It sits somewhere in between a paint and a shoe polish, and its pigments will not rub off that easily. Very easy to work with, many colours available, colours can be mixed without a problem and it also nourishes the leather. When repairing bags, nowadays, I almost always use Saphir's Canadian products for finishing instead of their shoe polish.

Lovely tutorial thanks. For the mottled look I start with wood stain and then lighter and darker leather dyes. Gets a great "aged and knackered" look to brand new leather . I also am a huge fan of antique to make the grain pop if you are using belly leather. Shoe polish is also a winner in my opinion. It's dye and it's wax. What could go wrong? I use it liberally when I'm doing black leather and stitching as the white core of the leather tends to show though the stitching holes and the polish sorts that right out. Lovely work and a great concept for a very tidy bag. Well done. That triple gusset looks tough. To be honest, I should probably have glued it up with the outer wrapping and stitched the whole thing right through. A bit of skiving on the edges along the stitch line makes multiple layers easier to deal with. Subscribed and look forward to more.

Hi Alex, thank you for the great feedback! I'm glad you liked the video and am very curious about the wood dye: how does this differ from leather dye? Is it not bad for the leather? The thing about shoe polish is that tons of people are saying the same as you, however I'm getting great results so far with no rub-off at all as long as it's applied properly... Hi Dr. Evil and thanks for your comment ! It's been a year now and my girlfriend uses it basically every day to carry her laptop and stuff for work around. It's wearing really nicely and is starting to look a bit used (but in the good / patina way). I was lucky and think I got the design and construction mostly right. The only two elements I would change now are : 1. the straps on the back are too far appart at the shoulders and will need fixing when I find the time - this makes wearing it not the most comfortable but she loves the bag and has got used to it (it also works ok'ish with the straps quite short) 2. the closing mechanisme was sown directly through the front flatp - I should have sown them into the inside lining of the flap so the sowing doesn't show from the outside. Hope these elements help :) Best, J.

@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
It's vegetable tanned leather (often called vegtan or veg-tan leather). You mostly find two types of leather, vegtan and chrome tan, the difference being in the processes used to obtain the leather. Most times, vegtan leather will be more resistant and less soft than chrome tan. I highly recommend you find out as much as you can about the difference between the two before choosing the leather you want for your project as they will have very different feels to them and will not require the same work processes to use. Good luck with your crafting :)

Well done! The mottled look... Was that a result of the oil/dye mix? How did it show as mottling? Better question; how did you apply the mix to make the effect? (I akin the look to dripping alcohol onto acrylic paintings, which make a more pronounced look. I like them both!!)
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you =) The oil and the dye don't mix well at all, so simply dipping the sponge or cloth into the mixture then applying it to the leather meant that some areas got more leather, some got more oil - then the oiled parts would not absorb the dye as well... all in all creating a nice mottled effect. Not sure I could do it again if I wanted to but happy with the results =)

Where do you purchase your leather? The leather looks like veg tan but appears supple somewhat after dying. Does the oil dye soften the leather some?
@JamesBerry

Hi Ian, I get it from a french website called DecoCuir (I'm based in Paris, France). The leather is somewhat supple at 1.4mm thickness and does stiffen up with dying to then become supple again after applying Neatsfoot oil. I don't have access to really high end leather though that will be my next big purchase if I can sell one of the bags I'm making. Do bear in mind that all the processes I do to the leather will vary greatly from one leather to another, one dye to another and one oil to another. I treat every piece of leather as a unique piece as I can't easily control the quality of the leather (or my techniques come to that).

the benefit of oil dye is that it doesnt dry out and stiffen leather like spirit based dye does.. so its not that the oil dye softens the leather, but it simply lets the leather stay as soft and flexible as it started out as.

The idea here was to make sure the dye was not going on evenly over all the leather, that there were some places with more oil in it than others so the dye would penetrate differently. Not sure how well this worked but I love the final finish. Will probably try this again sometime but varying it a bit... we'll see :)

I worry about shoe polish coming off on clothing or hands. I don’t use it on anything that comes in contact with clothing.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 6 жыл бұрын
I fully understand your concern and always warn people about this when discussing this method. That being said, my girlfriend and I have both been using these bags nearly on a daily basis with no traces of it rubbing off on cloths. I have polished both bags a few times since then and still have not seen any traces on my hands, cloths or even the couch the bags are thrown down on after a long day. I would therefor say, with absolutely no scientific evidence to back my claim, that if you rub off the shoe polish properly as they suggest on the polish box then you should not have any issue ;) If you try this out, do let me know what your results are like as I'm working with a very limited test pool here!

You can always seal the leather after applying the shoe polish if its something you're worried about; a top coat will effectively put a barrier between you and whatever dyes/stains/polishes are on the surface and preserve the look longer as well.

I like the overall look of this bag; its pretty unique in my experience, and the fact that its handmade just adds to that. I've never used shoe polish myself, but given that its designed to polish and help protect shoe (made of leather) it stands to reason that it would also work just as well on other leather pieces, with the bonus that its readily available and inexpensive; people who are more experienced may chime in otherwise and I defer to their knowledge, but in the absence of that I say if it works for you, go for it. One tip for the future (which you're free to take or ignore, since its just an idea); you might try something like this antiquing dye (www.tandyleather.com/en/product/fiebing-s-antique-finish-4-oz-british-tan) to get that mottled appearance. You dye your piece as normal, then once its dry you apply the antique (the amount will depend on how mottled you want it, with more giving a more dramatic look) and wipe it away fairly quickly; it will settle into any natural wrinkles, crevice, marks etc. in the leather, leaving them darkened, but it will also stain the rest of the surface irregularly, resulting in that patchy, mottled look.

Thanks for the comment :) Yes, I'm happy with shoe polish though many people are worried it might rub off on cloths. Though I completely understand why they think this, I've found that as long as you rub the polish off properly, then you shouldn't have any issues. I'll definitely give antique finishes in the future as I've seen other people get great results from it !

Its very nice bag ,, but I am sorry to tell you that you need more to delight the bag internal as I think it's poor finishing with the pockets , the outside is not matching with the inside ,, hope that your next bag be more beautiful,, please don't upset from my words
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Indeed I still have lots to learn and making sure the inside is as good as the outside is one of the next big challenges for me. At the moment I feel that doing this though will require a lot more equipment and materials and will make these bags more and more expensive to create. I totally understand the value of making the insides as nice as possible and thank you for your constructive criticism :)

Personally, I think I would have gone for a wider strap section over the shoulder, thinning up as needed, with the lower strap stitching outside of the shoulder section.

Thanks, this is an idea I'll be testing out in the future. I find that about 1/4th of all the time spent on a project goes into making the straps. Will be testing different options in the future for all these :)

From 16:24 to about 17:00 it appears that an entire panel is glued on after attaching buckles, but nary a stitch there. Just not something I'd do. I'm guessing it is largely for appearance (it turned nice) because it was sewn on the bottom..but up the sides Id have stitched it.
@JamesBerry

ah I see where the confusion comes from! I actually stitched all around the two parts (inside panel and outside panel) so that they should not move one bit =)

JamesBerry This one: amzn.to/2J0HBlm Its a great conditioning product, been using it for years. Makes it water resistant as well. If I want to take it a bit further, AFTER aussie has completely dried, I usually seal it with Resolene: amzn.to/2J0PCGM Resolene makes it waterproof and its the greatest leather protection finish out there. Also makes up for a great leather resist If you’re into using antique stains.
