As a messed up kid, this song always gave me hope that I could change, that things could be okay for me in the end. I suffered a lot of depression, including self-harm, and was told by religious people that I was going to go to hell and suffer for my hurting myself, and my lack of faith, but I always tried to ignore them, and keep my hope. Another reason I always try to be kind, to live my life with compassion and honor. You can always be kind. It costs nothing, and gives others such hope, something to cling to when they are in a bad place. Be kind.

"The song describes four passengers - a farmer on vacation, a teacher seeking higher education, a hooker and a preacher, both of whom were "searching for lost souls", on a mid-night bus traveling from the United States to Mexico. The bus is involved in a fatal accident due to the bus driver not seeing a stop sign only to be hit by an 18-wheeler which kills three of the four passengers; the lyrics ask why there are only three crosses and not four. (There is no mention of what happened to the drivers of either vehicle). The song mentions that the farmer and teacher were killed in the wreck, with the farmer leaving a harvest and a son who would follow in his footsteps, and the teacher leaving knowledge in the children she taught. It also mentions that the preacher lays his bloodstained Bible in the hands of the hooker, asking her if she could "see the Promised Land". The end of the song reveals that the story was being told by a preacher during Sunday church services. However, in a twist, it reveals that the hooker survived and had a son. The preacher telling the story is in fact the son of the hooker (holding up the bloodstained Bible as proof), who read the Bible that had been given to her by the dying preacher; in turn, her son eventually became a preacher himself."
@alexisdowers2030
@alexisdowers2030 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct, but I have a theory on what happened to the bus driver. That theory goes is that bus driver was so distraught that he tried to save them but was I unable to do so, but the hooker he was able to save her and they bonded (this is going off the fact that the driver is possibly single) and eventually they fell in love and married and had a kid who is now the preacher

This is a beautiful song, and I think only a few great country singers could try to cover this, and I can't think of any currently working that fit just right for it. Randy had the perfect voice for this, and I can never hear this song and not cry at least a little. I'm also glad the bus driver survived. They don't get mentioned, but I'm glad the lady had someone to help her after the crash. And I know they survived because there were five people on that bus, and three crosses. The truck driver, I'm going to assume survived for the same reason.

It made quite an impression on my daughter and myself. I couldn't tell you where we were going or where we came from that day but we will always remember what we saw.

I feel like the story he tells was straight forward and very touching but I also tried to analyze the placement of each person in the story. I think he symbolized Christianity through his song. You grow in faith and teach the word to others so you leave them with the word and wisdom to do the same. That's just what took from it but it's such a great song.

I love how much attention you paid to the lyrics. The farmer is on the bus for vacation. The teacher for education. The preacher and hooker are searching for lost souls, one to save'em, the other to use'em. After the accident the preacher is dyin' but leaves his Bible to the hooker. She, in turn, reads it to her son who grows up to be a preacher himself (and the one telling the story).

This makes me think of an episode of Touched by an Angel. A woman mechanic refuses to help Tess get to her birthday party, until Tess offers to give her the car in return for fixing her car and driving her there. The woman said that her father tried to save a baby's life from a house fire,and, they both died,so, helping strangers doesn't do any good. Meanwhile, the three regular angels,and, one from the records office, are waiting in the reserved party room. The two arrive just as the next scheduled event begins, an awards show for businessman of the year. The recording angel hears the woman's story, and exclaims that he'd just been reviewing that case. The baby boy lived! The young man being honored told the story about how a stranger had saved his life as a baby,and, turned his head so that the burn scars down the side of his face were visible.

Such a good song with a wonderful message. That preacher served his last purpose. And what a huge one. He lead a hooker to Jesus and she in turn lead her son to Jesus. And then her son grew up to be a preacher and will continue on to lead many lost souls to Jesus. So exciting. Hallelujah!

Do 1982! Randy Travis is such a good storyteller. His songs touch on things that are intimate to the human experience. He's truly a beautiful soul. It's not about what we earn in life or what we physically accomplish. The goal of life is to have a positive impact on our fellow man and leave behind beauty in this world, even if that beauty comes out of struggle or strife. Touching other people and affecting them in a way that promotes love and growth is the best we can aspire to in this world ♥️

You would LOVE Randy Travis' "It's Just a Matter of Time" and Trisha Yearwood's "The Song Remembers When" two of my all-time favorites. Listen and add them to your list !!!!

My husbands friend Kym Williams wrote this song. He's passed away now but he had a lot of hit songs in country music,
