Fantastic quick summaries. Professional racers can tell the difference as they are able to use 100% of the bikes capabilities. 99% of the rest of us would be happy on any of these bikes at any price point. It what pulls on your heart strings. Exclusive, exotics pull on my strings more than a generic Honda or Yamaha. European bikes have that extra moving art with stretching the tech.

Great summary of a bunch of bikes that are bordering on being irrelevant for road use. I do love sports bikes. Had several including zx7r, '04 Fireblade and a '15 S1000RR. Whilst the 7R wasn't setting the world alight with power, it was a great road bike. Satisfying to ride on road and track. The Fireblade felt on the limit of what power was remotely possible to use on the road. The RR tipped the balance and got rid within 6 months. Ironically, superb electronics and insane power, combine to make a bike that is video-game easy to just pin the throttle. Whilst this does allow the rider to focus on everything else, it doesn't stop the fact that you find yourself in two polar opposite ends of road riding: left feeling that you're pootling about using half revs and quarter throttle, or, you begin to feel that you're stretching it's legs, arriving home thinking - how am I (or others) still in one piece and will I be getting a brown envelope in the post in next two weeks ...worse, a knock on the door. let's have some great handling, usable sports bikes for the road that we can use and can afford.

I've been saying this for years. I'd take 130-150hp and a nice, usable torque curve over a 200hp revbox any time I'm not at a track. The Triumph looks about as close as you can get at the moment but I haven't tried one so can't say for sure. All this £25k for something that can't pull your gran under 10,000rpm is just daft.

Michael, don't forget that for the Roadside Assistance, BMW does NOT charge any deductibles unlike all other roadside assistance programs from all other motorcycle brands; such as Ducati, which ONLY gives you "up to" $200 to have a tow truck pick you up as part of the roadside assistance. You have to pay everything else after that. So, if you get stuck on a tour and the nearest Ducati or other exotic dealership is 200 miles away you are screwed. But, their is NO limit distance for BMW. They pay for ALL of the towing no matter the distance ! That is considered a true 5 Star Service to the 'conscious intelligent man'...

This is a great review by a more competent rider than myself. I will say that probably most riders are in the sub 20K category. The rest depends on your riding habits, capabilities and mechanical ability. Being a mechanic I like the low price of Kawasaki and the fun in fixin' it up (2014 N1K, 2019 ZX_10R). BMW, Aprilla, Ducati all have high cost of ownership. Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki are more user friendly and fun/cheaper to mod.

I second this. If you even want a slight taste of that 200hp, you'll be higher in the rev range going absolutely stupid speeds on the road. You could argue a supernaked would be more practical on the road, but I tried a Superduke and the torque on that thing was also far too much for the road in my opinion. I currently own a Duke 890 R, which is considered to be the goldilocks street bike, but I even think that bike is too fast for the street. As soon as you start having some fun, you're going over twice the speed limit already. Bonkers.

I would try and borrow or hire a 1000 for a week or just a weekend. The constant fueling and the prices ('bigger tanks') will disappoint you very quickly. The bloody thing was constantly pawing the sky and didn't really need 6 gears.. 3 gears was enough. Don't get me wrong it was laugh inducing but.. The running costs and higher insurance broke the deal for me. If budget is not an issue for you then buy one but i, myself can live without one happily. And besides wheres the challenge in just pulling away from everyone on the straight bits if you can't go round corners faster too. Nah I'll stick with my 6 and keep my licence longer too. Go try one though at least..

What I find interesting is the tuner shops that with no parts changed just stop the fly by wire butterflies closing at the top end with some reprogramming of the ecu and release so much power from the stock Japanese bikes. The Japanese bikes nearly all limit their own power with this method. I guess they have a reason? Just having that fixed by an ecu reprogrammed puts them back up with the European bikes power outputs.

I’d argue that a) go second hand cos you’ll get great bikes for way less. But b) if you want new… the base models are actually far better than all but the fast track day riders - you just pick the brand or looks you like really. Plus people throw some mods at it anyway.

Anyone would be happy with either i reckon, ZX10RR for me if I could choose, always loved ninjas and although apparantly not the best bike there still far more performance than what the average rider could use

How can one call a BMW "exotic"? These days the japanese bikes are the exotics in my opinion - here in Germany all the newer liter bikes are mostly BMW, Ducati or Aprilia - Japan has really fallen behind in technology and development, not only in MotoGP but also with their road bikes.

Don't forget that for the Roadside Assistance, BMW does NOT charge any deductibles unlike all other roadside assistance programs from all other motorcycle brands; such as Ducati, which ONLY gives you "up to" $200 to have a tow truck pick you up as part of the roadside assistance. You have to pay everything else after that. So, if you get stuck on a tour and the nearest Ducati or other exotic dealership is 150(or more) miles away you are screwed. But, there is NO limit distance for BMW. They pay for ALL of the towing no matter the distance ! That is considered a true 5 Star Service to the 'conscious intelligent man'...

Here is something interesting to look at. Here in China the motorcycle prices are through the roof. Just to list a few: BMW S1000rr base model = 297,900RMB - 44363.72USD Ducati Panigale v2 = 222, 000RMB - 33049.48USD Ducati Panigale v4 (base model no 's') = 248,000RMB - 36920.14USD Kawasaki Ninja ZX10r = 360, 000RMB - 53593.76USD Yamaha YZF-R1 = 229,000 RMB - 34091.58USD Suzuki GSX-R1000 = 339,800RMB - 50586.55USD Honda CBR1000rr-r = 428,000RMB - 63717.02USD These are a few of the liter bikes, however to be honest the 600 CC's are also all from 260k to 400k RMB (CNY). And all the motorcycles have a 13 year scrap period before you can't ride your motorcycle anymore. (Sad but true, I own a Ducati here and plan to ship it to a foreign country once it reach that period or 120 000km).
