So, I decided to rework this list with the new rules from the Best Female Protagonist video (Duel Score is now -1 point for each loss, not 0). I did this with the Best Protagonist video as well; however, the final results for this video don't actually change. I'm still going to post the updated scores because I already did the work. The new duel scores are as follows: 1st. Jack Atlas: 509 (Minus 7 points from 516) 2nd. Chazz Princeton: 221 (Minus 12 points from 233) 3rd. Reginald Kastle: 69 (Minus 6 points from 75) 4th. Seto Kaiba: 56 (Minus 5 points from 61) 5th. Declan Akaba: 21 (Minus 3 points from 24) 6th. Ryoken Kogami: 18 (Minus 3 points from 21) As I stated before, this does not change the final scores from what they were in the video, since the updated scoring doesn't even have an affect on the duel scores for the rivals. I had actually expected some change, but the losses were just too few. Though I guess you could make 69 jokes about Shark's new duel score.
@shadowpyre4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think this new way of ranking duel scores is quite fair. The -1 for loses actually does punish those who duel more and lose more but quite a bit, whilst not being too harsh on those with less duels but less losses.
@Chronoflation4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he said the 0 "punished characters with lots of duels and lots of losses", but it basically just made those duels not count. I think he should divide the characters total points by their total possible points so it's out of 100%, and then give a curve for number of duels, maybe add 0.1 points for each duel (I would personally use square root to kinda balance out fodder matches), so willingness to duel still plays a factor but wouldn't give an absurd advantage

Mathematical tip: You are literally NOT punishing people for lots of duels with lots of losses You may be aware of the math test like a special test people can be in if they are really good at their school. It's *necessary* to give negative points for mistakes or else you can just do whatever you like with no punishment. So yeah your counting method already has problems. Your duel score is just broken and not good. It makes sense to give 0 points in a tournament because there you necessarly need them to go onwards. Every system still values a loss as a negative performence and hence substracts points. Maybe you will correct this but I don't know. You would need to redo a lot of math. Maybe someone told you before. Anyways yeah you actually didn't do what you think you did and said ypu did. Which is why having many duels in your system is like the cheapest and best thing possible. Not win ratio. Not anything else. You have 2 categories dedicated to number of games and both of them only truely focus on "get a lot of games together and win a good amount." Welp that's unfortunate. And this isn't even an opinion this a mathematical flaw in your system. Oh and best systems are systems like chess. You may want to look them up. No not the tournament system but the ranking system.

I think offscreen duels shouldn't count TBH: since in cases like Jack Atlas, getting like over 100 duels because of offscreen shinanigans is.. a bit much. It doesn't accurately show us the dueles they actually dueled against somewhat relevant people. I just think it favors offscreen duels way too much, maybe add some more catagorys if you can think of any (Its 3 AM I'd try but ma brain.)

Agreed. I'd be interested in videos dealing with only on-screen wins, and maybe breaking rating each win or loss on a scale (close wins and losses count less than bigger ones.) But I suppose that could introduce some bias...

Yeah but think about it this way, how many duels have protagonists had that were against random bums. Protagonists get that shield to win against random of the week, while rivals are made to be beaten. So counting all their "bum fights" beforehand is fair.

I know this is way too late to matter, but to clarify Akaba Reiji's duels, it was mentioned that he was the youngest person ever to become a professional duelist, and to do that he'd have to the low and mid tier qualifiers. To get into them you need a win percentage that's over fifty I think, then win the tournament, so you could add 36 wins at least from that. There was also the time he effectively wiped out a small army of sector security, and then their leader who used holograms which made an endless stream of duelists. He did lose those three, but to be fair, one was just plot convenience, one was against an immortal super duelist that basically ignored damage (still came the closest to winning). Sorry, rambled a bit. Even with those three losses, I'd still count him way higher, Second at least.

To this day, I really can't tell if Jaden's rival was Chazz, Zane or Aster. He wanted to surpass Zane as the top student. He had to get a new deck to defeat Aster after that loss. And Chazz was always around to challenge Jaden to a duel, but it looked like he didn't really care after throwing away that Obelisk uniform. It looked like Jaden had that bond with all of them.
@Malthizar4 жыл бұрын
It's more about the Rival's view of the protag as well as their skill in relation to them. Vegeta is still Goku's rival even after Jiren and Broly. Sasuke is still Naruto's rival even after Gaara and Neji. Despite Astor and Zane, both respecting Jaden, neither had a constant desire to surpass him

@@Malthizar Chazz didn't have the desire either. His biggest and final duel was against Aster, when he proved himself worthy of being a pro duelist. I really don't like giving the characters L when they were clearly going to win, but something unethical (like having to kill Mokuba) stops them from finishing it. They are heroes if the "went through with it" then they would no longer be protagonists . I really wish that these were under DNFs, saying they are losses rubs me the wrong way :( Sorry that quickly turned into a mini rant. Love the rest of everything in this video series. Keep killing it!
@Malthizar4 жыл бұрын
The issue with not counting them as losses is that it can potentially get murky. Ex. Yes, Yugi losing to suicidal Kaiba would be agreed to fall under DNF, but would Yugi losing to Rebecca? How about Yugi losing to Pegasus? In both of these duels, a case can be made for why they should be considered DNFs or normal losses
@darkherogalaxy61984 жыл бұрын
I understand your main point and I overall agree with you, but just so you know for future your discussions, protagonist doesn't actually mean being a hero. Don't feel bad though, this is a common misconception caused by the fact that most protagonists are what people usually consider to be heroes. However, protagonists are simply the main characters and focal point of a story. (And antagonists are any characters that are opposing the protagonists.) So protagonists can be heroes and/or villains. That applies with antagonists as well. One of the best examples for this would be Death Note. Characters can also switch between the two throughout a series. The rivals in Yugioh started out as antagonists and then they became protagonists themselves by allying with the current protagonists of the series. Please note I'm not trying to be a know it all or "grammar Nazis". Just trying to spread wisdom. "The more you know" kind of thing.

I've not seen the other yugioh series, so I can't comment on how many people the other rivals played against, but the whole thing about Seto's Kaibas character was how losing to anyone was SUCH a personal thing since he basically never fucking lost. Out of all the duels he fought during the series, he likely won a metric fuckton offscreen but only lost in the show. It took people using Millenium items or the heart of the cards to get the better of him and sometimes even that shit didn't work.
