Brad, Lex? This is a Motown written song, (they had an incredible staff of writers- Dozier, Whitfield, and of course Smokey Robinson, who penned this masterpiece) It wasn't uncommon for multiple artist at Motown to record the same song, which is the case here. The legendary Temptations recorded this in '66, (and had a big hit), while this one that you're listening to, from Rare Earth, (Motown act of course) which was released in 1970, and it to was a big hit. What's incredible about the Rare Earth version, is that unlike the Temptations, who were all singers, were a full band, and incredibly this great vocalist Pete Rivera is the drummer. In 1974, at Cal Jam I, they were the first band on stage, (9a) for the all day/evening concert.

Lex the Funk Brothers (The Motown session band) used tambourines, steel pots and even a toy piano to make their unique sound in the Hitsville Studio in Detroit. The original Rare Earth version was about 11 minutes long. They also did a cover of another Temptations hit I’m losing you and Papa was a Rolling Stone. Rare Earth was effectively able with to fuse rock and soul in their 70’s recordings. They had their own label under Motown called Rare Earth.

It always throws me for a loop when people react to Rare Earth. Gil Bridges, the co-founder and sax player was part of my extended family. He was my uncle's uncle, but I always called him Uncle Gil. I spent a lot of time around him and his daughter as a child. Unfortunately, he passed away earlier this year. RIP Uncle Gil. Edit: It also blows me away how many fans there are in the comments. I always forget how big they were.

They weren't the only white act, but the only successful white act. Most people don't know this , but Bobby Darin tried his luck at Motown but couldn't catch that groove. His groove was singing standards and that style of music had played out.

@@themajicman745 Also Lesley Gore had an album out on Mowest that didn't hit. But there were others before Gore and Darin who may or may not have released a single or two before being dropped. Chris Clark was a white female soul singer who had an album ot two issued in the 60s because she was shtupping Berry Gordy. And The Mynah Birds were a white/black American/Canadian band in the 60s that featured both Rick James AND Neil Young!! They were signed but never released more than a single. The Four Seasons also did a stretch at Motown, but nothing ever hit, after they left, one song, "The Night" became a hit in the UK just as they made their 1970's comeback.
