Let’s face it. Housewives of the 1890s who could read probably took a few creative liberties themselves. The important thing is sticking as close as reasonably possible to the original intent of the design. I mean come on, are we going to apply leeches to treat fever or simply pop a Tylenol.

There was so much assumed knowledge in most of these patterns that I think the others who made this ABSOLUTELY would have used a stacked single if it were common practice. Why not learn from the years of experience of others?

My grandmother could read, but until she had mastered reading, she was shown stitches as a child and encouraged to make useful items for sale. She crocheted fine work... Irish crochet. Mainly collars, cuffs, gloves, trimming for bed linen, towels, tablecloths napkins handkerchiefs etc.. Very fine crochet hooks, leather protector for index finger re fine thread and sharp small hooks. Many of her stitches patterns etc were committed to memory, she could read a little but if you gave her a sample or piece of work... She could read the sample and reproduce or even repair the item. She also did this with knitting. My mum encouraged her to tell how she did a pattern and mum recorded it. I have samples of her borders, open work, motifs etc.... Even a some knitting. The baby shawl Christine pattern is fantastic. 1 ply, cast on one and at each row make one at the beginning when you get to the req. No of stitches you start to decrease in the same manner... You have a garter stitch 'diamond... The rest consists simply of picking up stitches on a side, couple of foundation rows, a row of holes for a ribbon if desired then feather and fan stich which you are supposed to know how it's done... Sew up, work a 16 stitch border around the outside....

Absolutely. The old instructions are so vague and so different according to different countries and publications and even in families they use different terms and names . Its really just twisting string around so it really doesn't matter so long as it's basically the thing.

@lizholmes2730 my grandma did that too...I have some of her lace which I'm trying to look at and to be honest most isn't crotchet it's something else ..and might even be my great grandmother's cos some si really old .... id love to do something with them before they fall apart into dust. She didn't know hwo she knew what she knew she just knew it and she never explained anything...she would sit me on her lap and saw now...and make me follow along in the middle of her legs. And then say...now! And now! And I had to copy her. She died when I was 8 so I didn't learn a whole lot unfortunately. It wasn't till I was older and got to clean the family home I found all the leatherwork lace work lace lengths and collars and cuffs ..some garters...ah. I dont know what to do with them but they are precious.

I was thrilled when you said you were going to do it the way you thought was best. We are watching to see how you cope with the mystery pattern and how you deal with the confusion. One day the pedantic few will be able to watch an AI robot do the pattern and they will be happy. Until then I suggest they stop watching and/or commenting. 1890 was a good year. My Gramma was born that year. She showed me how to do a yarn over, and answered any question I had about crochet. While working on the first project, I sat on the G’ma & G’pa’s back porch bench.

Yeah!! Kept telling my screen please do you! Enjoy the process! If someone anyone wants to be a stickler for perfection on following the pattern, they should consider starting their own channel. Yes the channel is ‘just vintage crochet’, but we should also give you grace as to run your channel. At least I don’t know what all goes into doing this but it is more than I think… I am here to join you in this exploration of vintage patterns. I want you to enjoy as much as I do! Please keep been you! Adjust as much of the patterns as you feel you need to ;)

*)*Monarch Andalusian* (1930s) was a soft wool yarn. It was 4-ply and sold in 1 oz balls (1934). It was suitable for Infant and childrens garments, including carriage covers. Correct weight for Pullovers, Ladies Hats, Scarves and Berets.

Haven't finished watching yet, so you might still get it yourself, too, but the reason they are starting each round between the first and second Treble is that they do not count the starting chain as a real treble, so the centre of the cluster is actually between the first and second true treble stitch; hope that makes sense...

Whee! I love this! As I understand it, at the beginning of round 2, the pattern is not naming that beginning chain up as a treble (because you are chaining), therefore, it says "...first and second trebles..." when it means to put the group of 4 in the middle (between the second and third trebles). You correctly placed this shell in the middle, i.e. between the "second" and third. This obviously predates the familiar, conventional obligatory phrases, "...chain x number of chains..." followed by "...chain group counts as first whatever stitch in this and all following rows..." or words to that effect. Thank you so much!

I think they said between first and second long trebles because they are not considering the starting chain to be a long treble. So that would indeed put you starting in the center of the group. Pronunciation of Andalusian: and illusion I absolutely love your channel! I have to admit I am one of those people that yells at the screen translating the pattern into modern terms; not that anyone but my cats hear me. LOL. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tutorial or a mystery pattern, I watch all your videos! I even love the flipping-n-picking videos. And when it comes to putting your preferred methods into the patterns, you do you! If you want to work a stacked single, do it. Thank you for introducing me to vintage patterns.

The shawl is very pretty and delicate. It's interesting that the shawls were made in a square and then folded into a rectangle, rather than working from one corner up. I guess those two layers of work were warmer to wear. 🙂

7:15 I believe the pattern was saying the first true treble and second treble (where you placed it) vs between the chain and the first treble stitch! That’s how I interpreted it Also love you working this how you want to! We know the people 133 years ago were doing their favorite methods and shortcuts going off pattern so why can’t you

As a self taught crocheter that i have been since i was a child ( 63 years old now), and i could never understand those crochet patterns, now that I saw your channel and see how you read the old patterns and try to understand them I now Am open maybe to try to do something following one simple pattern. Maybe. I am a free spirit and do my own things so it is going to be hard for me to stick to do something different. Also my mother tongue is Spanish, so is a challenge. I give little blankets/sample-sized stuff to my doggie. I cover him up on the couch when he is sleeping and then put them up when he’s not napping so he can’t chew them. It’s never fun when the strings come out the other end. 😂

I think it says "between the first and second" treble stitches because the first "stitch" of the group is your starting chain (or stacked stitches - stick to your guns, girl!). That way "between the first and second" is actually in the middle of the group. This is a gorgeous pattern!

32:29 the repeat starts with the 4 chain and dc, so all but the last long treble should have a picot, for a total of 5 picots. 42:42 with 5 picots you would be able to do it 4 times

When I was 16 years old, my mum picked up an extremely rare virus which left her paralysed in her right arm. Long story short part of her rehabilitation was learning to crochet. The first thing she made was a shawl for 52:45 to wear with the dress I had made to wear to a party. I still have it 40 years later , it hasn't been worn for a long time but I will never part with it x

Every crochet person with some experience will develop a personal style. That doesn't take anything away from the mystery pattern as a whole. So just use your style and let the few negative voices yell in the void. 😉

I am fairly new here and love these antique patterns you try out. I want to make some around 1880s doily pattern for the top of my 1880s drawers and You have inspired me to try a doily patterh I found from the mid 1800s. it is a tad confusing but fun. wonderful hearing you make the pattern the way you want to! I wonder if round 3 was supposed to start with turning your work and going back into the corner you had just finished? edit: or they just missed the slip over instructions in that row! at least the repeat had them :)

The first words of the 3rd round are to slip over the first treble, in other words, you would have ended the previous round by joining into the top of your 5 chain, then slip stitch over the treble, putting you in the middle of the group.

I think one thing confusing you if that you’re counting your chain/stacked singles as a treble and the pattern isn’t. So it says to slip past the first treble, which puts you in the middle of that group of four because the first “stitch” isn’t a stitch, it’s a chain. You’re counting that first group as 1-2-3-4 trebles, but it’s actually 0-1-2-3 the way the pattern is referring to it.

This was such an enjoyable video, thank you so much, but I have a burning need to mention a couple of things.. all right, three things :) 1 Whoever decided that the US and the UK needed different crochet terms, I curse you to the end of time, you've made everything twice as hard for us all :*( 2 The Victorian era was the first age of mass, cheap printing, they were NOT good at testing and proof reading! Even Mrs Beeton's contains some absolute howlers, it's perfectly normal for you to have to bodge a few things! 3 I know it wouldn't make for good videos, but it was drummed into us as youngsters that you read ALL the instructions, all the way to the end, before you start :)

17:00 what they are saying is that the 5 chain counts as the first long treble of the group. They are not saying that the slip stitch counts as 1 of the 5 chain

I think what was confusing you at the beginning of the rounds was that they weren't considering the starting chain as a stitch. When they said "between the 1st and 2nd" but it was in the center of a group of 4, they meant the 1st actual treble, not counting the starting chain as a stitch. It is indeed confusing!

Lovely old pattern. I would think most of us make modifications to recipes, sewing patterns, dance steps, hair cuts, and so on, to fit our taste or to incorporate shortcuts or new methods. So why shouldnt we make mods and/or adjustments to old crochet patterns?
