Rashid Khalidi: Israel Systematically Targets Palestinian Journalists to Hide Reality of Occupation

Palestinians are holding a state funeral in Ramallah for Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran journalist who was one of the best-known television journalists in Palestine and the Arab world. Abu Akleh, who was a U.S. citizen, was wearing a press uniform and covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank when she was fatally shot in the head on Wednesday. Israel initially claimed she may have been shot by a Palestinian gunman, but later said it was unclear who shot her, after witnesses, including other journalists, said she was shot dead by Israeli forces. "People are shocked all over Palestine, all over the Arab world, actually," says Rashid Khalidi, professor of modern Arab studies at Columbia University. Israel's "colonial army" has "systematically targeted" Palestinian journalists, says Khalidi. "It's really important to Israel that nobody see what's going on in the Occupied Territories."

No reporter should be executed for doing their job. Shereen was dear to our hearts. The murderers cannot expect to be allowed to investigate themselves. The real problem is the occupation which would not survive if the US didn’t support Israel.

Some of our government supports Israel. The American public, not so much anymore. I definitely don’t, since I can read and look for my own information online. I don’t bother with their “official” denials of occupation and such. I expect a disengagement in the near future. I don’t believe their version of events or that God chose them over the rest of humanity. If their God is an angry, jealous, taking sides guy, destroying God, I want NO part in that hell. To me, God is perfect, and like a Father, loves All his children. He doesn’t have Human imperfections like jealousy, rage, murder, hunger, greed, etc. In my mind and heart, their god does not touch me, for my God is perfect, loving, protecting,shielding, and everything good and blessed. The God of Creation is our God. Not a destructive, jealous, revengeful being. He allowed his only son to die. He destroyed the world with the flood. He wanted us dead and gone because we disobeyed. Do you want this god in your life? Maybe that’s why the world is like it is.

As Prof Said pointed out this isn't am isolated incident it has been policy for the israeli colony for 70+yrs. Without US backing the apartheid regime would have been abolished and their leaseds been dragged before an international court to answer for war crimes and crimes against humanity. One incident in particular sticks in my mind which highlights israeli brutality and lack of any morality is the 2004 murder of 13yr old schoolgirl, Iman Al Hams, shot 17 times at point blank range by an idf "officer" for being too close to the apartheid wall. International exposure resulted in a military court finding him not guilty despite incriminating evidence from his own subordinates (later withdrawn under idf pressure) He was compensated for "his distress" and then promoting him to Major.

No. She was sadly caught in the line of fire and it has not been determined who fired the round that killed her. The US investigation concluded she was not deliberately targeted by either side and her death was accidental. Very suspicious the PA would not hand over the round for forensic testing for weeks, what were they trying to hide? Saw a photo recently. It was of a highway in Israel on holocaust memorial day. The cars had stopped and people had got out to observe the silence. It struck me in that moment just how important remembrance is to Israelis. Not least, it protects them from having to come to terms with the daily realities of their horrific occupation. In that respect, remembrance is doing more harm than good and we should no longer observe it.

It's now Israel. But for the sake of argument, let's say once upon a time there was actually a country called Palestine. It is now called Israel. Just like "the new world" is now the United States. Things change, but unlike the United States which hasn't always existed, Palestine never existed.
