Wow never seen this before. I think this is still quite rare to see for us westeners. Thank you very much.

In fact, many Hakka villiage defending battle arrays in Taiwan still do that kind of shield and short sabre work. It is heavily connected with temple organisations (and often the mafia) and not really in the realm of gongfu schools.

you say that as if Chinese martial arts were never related to either temple defense OR organized crime, and we all know they are related to BOTH

As long as there's something to protect or fight for there's always going to be some form of fighting.

@@DavidRoss2780A, sorry, of course you are right. Was referring to modern day Taiwan, where MA schools and association don‘t have those traditional ties anymore, but many older and private teachers still do.

The short blade seems so out of place with a shield that big. The dao or jian would help with striking distance compared to what looks like a long kitchen knife.
@aardvarkhendricks6555 Жыл бұрын
@Benja Sa Bukid Not that short.

@Benja Sa Bukid To see a large shield like that would immediately telegraph a defense that is beyond personal. A rational person would deduce defense on a local garrison or militia scale which would mean military weapons are to be expected such as dao, jian and shorter swords......not kitchen knives.

@@aardvarkhendricks6555 My impression is that this blade wouldn't be military or militia. Rather, civilian self defence and martial arts practice. Historically, that shield is paired with a much bigger Dao. I believe civilian armed escorts would use something like that, unless they were deputies by the local or prefecture magistrate to carry actual weapons during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
