I actually screwed up a little in this video when talking about the transmissions. The 90 model had the AOD transmission, not the AODE, the 91 and 92 models had the AODE, and the 93+ models have the 4R70W. The problems are correct, but I was off a little on my years.

Oh man , I almost pissed myself laughing. You got the Lincoln driver's badge of honor here. I drive a '97 Town Car Signature, and I have DONE the Town Car shimmy in the rain!! Let me tell you, it IS f***en awful! 'Tail whips harder than an ugly stripper! Thankfully my trunk latch is fine, but I know better than to slam it. The turning radius is NOT great on these, and the damn buttons are all but permanently stuck in as the spring in the rubber membrane is shot out. You are amazing, man. and FUUUCCCKKKKK Ford for their crappy window lifter, I had to replace both of mine in the front, and I tell ya: after trying to drill the rivets out, I KNOW size matters... I barely got enough depth to properly drill them out. Sounded like a herd of pigs getting corn-holed, too.

i hope this guy is kidding hes not wrong about the problems with these cars just overstates them and mercon 5 trans fluid is not that expensive about a dollar more than regular ATF, every car has problems especially when they are 20+ years old I had a shit condition 95 town car with 4.6 that never left me stranded just needed a lot of work and now have a 90 grand marquis well maintained with 5.0 of course they are underpowered but that isnt a bad thing these cars are boats and never meant to be fast stock they can with performance parts from the fox body mustangs in the 5.0s case. and if you replace things that obviously go out after 20 years rubber, pumps, suspension these car are cheap to maintain compared to the rolling computer cars nowadays.
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's information with an angry sense of humor. The mercon V thing was a bit exaggerated with today's prices, but a few years ago, not so much. It used to be nearly $5 extra per quart. There is a difference between fast and safe. My 94 Impala SS isn't fast by any means, but it can definitely get it's big ass rolling for passing power.

This was not a good video. Don't understand the angry, but they aren't that bad of a car. I have 1990, it runs fine. Had to fix a few things, but it's 27 years old. Nothing lasts forever, unless you take car of it. You see those Lincoln's that are practically destroyed due to neglect and abuse. Sometimes it ain't the car, it's the owner.

I always loved these Lincoln Town Car's but I do like them with the 4.6L V8. To me the were excellent engines that last a long time with proper maintenance. Yes they are rather underpowered but that's ok. The rest of the car makes up for it. The body style is what really sold these cars. The were car of the year in 1990 and were very strong sellers. The transmissions I can understand being a Ford issue altogether. But engine wise they are great. The air suspension is not all that bad as most people exaggerate. It's easy to replace and works great when working. Overall quality is very good. And all the problems listed are all fixable.

On the subject of Town cars, I had a '91 and the day I bought it, the fuel pump went out. (Of course). Fortunately, the '91 was the only year where you could reach the fuel pump without having to drop the tank. The problem was, the car was built for California and had Cali-spec emissions system. The nylon clips included with the new pump were the wrong shape, well, after a lot of fuck around. A guy at NAPA found the correct clip, it was a GM part! Fucking Lincoln.

Understand that I'm not trying to push people away from a specific brand or a specific car, it's all about going into a deal armed with information. Any used car is going to have quirks, I've never seen one that didn't. These videos are about showing people what to look for before purchase. I like the town cars, they're good cars, even the stuff I talk about is minor. If the car you're looking at has all of these issues, then it probably wasn't maintained, up to you to decide if you want to fix it, or try to find a better one.

PLEASE tell me where are all the freeze plugs are on a 1993 town car !!! My rear ones I think are leaking and it sucks.....................Basically , how many are there and where are they located !! Oh ,I thought that shifting issue was the rear bearings and axle !! WOW Thank you............its of course the 4.6 !!
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
There is one in the back of each head and two behind the flywheel on the block. It's highly unusual for freeze plugs to leak on a 4.6L car, I've never seen it happen. I think it's more likely to be either heater pipe that runs under the intake or the intake gaskets themselves. If you can pull the alternator off and shine light under the intake, you might see antifreeze under there, which would indicate the heater pipe.
@JayB-bq7hh
@JayB-bq7hh 7 жыл бұрын
Well it leaks from the rear of block in the center. The motor was also over heated about a year ago and slowly got worse. Motor runs fine, but drops water if not running or if pressure builds.
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there is drain for the intake valley at the center rear of the block. There is a little spout that comes through the block, directly from the water pump and the heater pipe connects to it. Fairly common for that guy to start leaking and way easier to check for than a freeze plug.

@mewtwo255200
@mewtwo255200 7 жыл бұрын
JC316 I can understand that. At least with coil springs that is one less thing to go wrong. About the rain part, perhaps the panthers you have driven did not have traction control where as mine does. Or maybe they all happened to have crappy tires?
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
No traction control on them. Must be better than the traction system on the Mark VIII, cause that is completely useless.
@alb12345672
@alb12345672 7 жыл бұрын
98+ have a modern traction control system, not that anything on a RWD thing helps. The 97+ Marks too. The older system does not reduce engine power, it is based on Torque vectoring and braking spinning wheels. The newer system will cut engine power. Believe it or not modern RWDs BMWs use a similar system (as the older one) if you turn of stability control. People don't like their power cut. Like the Town Cars it can't be turned off. 90s BMWs also used that ATE ABS/TC setup. You can also install a locking rear axle in a few hours - same 8.8 axle as explorers, F150, Mustang etc. In my experience you don't have to shim much. I have a mustang carbon fiber trac lock and the newer Traction control in my 98 and I'm very satisfied. I never have problems in the rain or snow.

I'm shocked you didn't mention the ball joints! The ball joints on our old 96 failed at least twice that I know of and I hear it's a fairly common problem with these Lincoln Towncars. Also I know the pain of that bouncy back end when the air suspension goes. We were ridding like that for a while and it sucked.
@michaelpriddy8690
@michaelpriddy8690 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the problem with ball joints is that most repairmen dont have the proper equipment to fix ball joints in this car. They will usually pound the new ones back into the socket with hammers instead of a press. That makes the socket out of round and causes the almost immediate need for another replacement.

I don't know how much did you drive Town Cat and how good driver you are, but I had three Town Cars. 1984, 1995, 1997 and just got another one - 1996 with 78000 miles. Drove in heavy rain and snow with trailer and without. When was younger, had some "lead foot" too. Can't give the number in public. :-) Never slipped or slide. Quite a few times managed to get uphill in the snow where some SUV drivers gave up. Never got stranded... yet. Of course they have problems. Just like any other cars. And like other cars, if you take care of it and know how to drive, it will take care of you. Wouldn't change for any other. Wouldn't mind to have a few horsess more and positraction rear end tho.

You have absolutely no clue about these cars. These were the best cars Ford ever produced in the 90's and not to mention the gold standard for limousine companies for a reason. Ford killed themselves in fact by discontinuing this model. I've got two, a 96 and 97 with close to 300k each. Other than one transmission 12 years ago on one, due to a teenage learning to drive on it like an idiot, and the other a spring suspension conversion, these cars are comfortable as hell, solid, reliable and get outstanding gas mileage on the open road considering the weight. You're slipping and sliding on wet pavement due to bald or cheap tires from China. I think it's time you sold it and climbing back into your dusty Dodge Ram 1500 with steer horns above the grill and gun rack mounted in the rear window and made your way down the highway.
@316Autos
@316Autos 6 жыл бұрын
Best car ford produced in the 90's is a very low bar. Taurus, escort, contour, Festiva, probe, and tempo weren't exactly fierce competition. Mustang, Panther cars, and Thunderbird were the only good ones from that era. If you think a teenager can harm a 4R70W with bad driving, you have no business commenting on anything automotive related. I''ll put my 94 Impala SS against a panther car for both power and gas mileage any day of the week. I've had multiple panther based cars with good and different brands of tire, they all handled like crap in the rain. Nice Texan stereotype, but I rarely see a gun rack any more. Too many damned yankess moved here and pitched a hissy fit, not man enough to handle seeing a rifle in a truck window.

@@316Autos Guess you've never had teenagers then that think they can drive cars like in video games with the car rolling out the driveway in reverse on a steep incline and slamming it into Drive over and over again. Eventually any transmission won't shift properly if you do that act enough times. And those teenagers are adults now, moved on new lives and children and I still own both the 1996 approaching 405k and 1997 Towncars with the 1997 approaching 495k. I cannot see a Taurus, Escort or a Contour even getting close to that in miles without going thru at least 3 engine overhauls.. A Probe or Festiva possibly over 200k but definitely not a Tempo which was an absolute sh*tbox especially the first year of production. Mustangs were terrible back in the 80's especially the V8 4 speed which I owned and that thing was a nightmare due to body integrity issues, emission and clutch problems in fact the clutch was so heavy in that car that it broke the drivers seat rear bolts holding the seat in place eventually. CHP was issued these same cars in the early 80's but discontinued using them due to safety issues and poor gas mileage with a Holley carb. A 1985-86 302 fuel injected Mustang would be the better much more reliable years of these cars versus these ecopit (ecoboost aka problematic/unreliable) Mustangs.

My gripes: dry lower ball joint cannot be greased, so you known to replace them when you hear a knxious creeking when pulling n a drve way or riding over speed bumps. The AC/Heat works opposite the weather situation; terminal problem or get lucky with a reset code. The heater core can rot-out and leak so you gotta bypass it or face a brutal labor cost. Clearcoat bubbles up on these cars. Rust can occur just n frnt f the rear wheels. Car takes a Class III hitch nicely, but Motor can ping when towng. mHe covered the rest..

You left out one major design flaw in the engine that I've come across with my '97. Apparently, a very common problem is that the intake manifold on the '92-'02 models has a tendency to warp, robbing power from take off and acceleration. Really annoying and a little bit pricey to fix unless you know how to fix it yourself.

...and yet there are tons more of these cars on the road still and you hardly ever see GM products of the era. They also sold more to begin with for a reason. The Ford Panther variants were made for over 30 years. I've personally owned 3 of them and still have 1. Comfortable, well-built vehicles with a more traditional or "primitive" design by modern standards, but cars like this are what made American cars famous. Want to pick a specific era of GM vehicles and point out problems? Don't think there's enough bandwidth available for that upload...

Gotta 86 MGM. Great car, but going by the user reviews the AOD is weak, so I better baby it. Rain can indeed be a problem if you're in a hurry. Lock motors needed replacement after a few decades, and I equiped my rear windows with springs to help them rolling up (counterbalancing the mass of the windows). Luckily, I don't have air suspension. Overal panters are durable cars, but Ford aimed to deliver a luxurious car at a relative low price, so obviously they had to cut corners... The 150hp 5.0 with AOD is quick of the line compared to the vast majority of cars here in Europe. I'm not racing anyone, it's just an observation. I have no complaints about a stationwagon dat does 0-60 in 11 sec and tops out at about 180-190 km/h, but then again, I'm never in a hurry..
@316Autos
@316Autos 8 жыл бұрын
Pretty much spot on. Nice idea with the windows. 0-60 in 11 seconds is terrible over here, especially when you consider that the other full size luxury cars from the same era are in the 7-9 second range. It's fine for daily driving, but merging onto the highway or passing someone can be tricky. The panther cars should have gotten the 225HP version of the 5.0L. No doubt they are good cars.

Im assuming when you talk about spark plug blowout and other problems youre speaking of the 4.6. But even then youre talking about only after the second iteration of the 4.6 when they raised the the compression levels. The timing chains were only an issue because of the same compression level raise. You wanna compare the $300,000,000 toyota spent on developing the 4.0 to the lincoln, fine. Then lets address the issue of the cost being passed onto the consumer in both initial cost and repair costs as well. I cant believe you want to compare the Nissan product in any way with the loncoln but if so look at major compression loss! The chevy 350 actually is a great engine! Unfortunately they only were putting it in the tahoe and suburban at the time.

And lastly the AOD transmission is STILL one of the go to transmissions for late model rebuilds and restorations even when it wasnt the original transmission in their car or truck. It is simple. It is cheap. My particular lincoln had 198,000+ miles on the aod before going. And it wasnt even the transmissions fault it was because of the teflon gear changer cable connection thing finally breaking after 28 years! Find me an Infiniti thats not junked that can do that!

You actually don't need a ton of horsepower to get the car up to speed. It actually takes torque to do that. Most people with high horsepower cars can't actually use the horsepower to hit their top speeds. They actually are nice cars that have plenty of power to get up to speed and maintain that speed.
@316Autos
@316Autos 7 жыл бұрын
Horsepower is just an equation of torque, but you're right to a degree. Torque gets you moving, horsepower is about maintaining that speed, as well as top speed. Unfortunately the 4.6L doesn't hit peak torque until about 4K RPM, where the old 302 hit peak torque at 2400rpm. You need revs with the 4.6L and that's a problem with a big heavy sedan. That's why 4.10 gears are so popular with the modular motors, it gets you into the power band quicker.
@Tigerfire75

The AOD was, is, and always will be crap, true definition of a slush box. The 4R70W was much improved. 5.0L was good for sure, but got the terrible heads in the 90 TC. 4.6L was/is an embarrassment, long lasting sure, but terrible. Lets look at the competition in the 90-97 Range and the max HP/TQ. Ford 4.6L 210HP/275, Cadillac 4.6L 300HP/295TQ, Infinity 4.5L 278HP/292TQ, Lexus 4.0L 250HP/260TQ, Chevy 5.7L 260HP/335 TQ BMW 4.0L 282HP/295TQ. Ford was worst in class on power, and near the bottom in MPG. This guy has no idea WTF he is talking about on the Air suspension. So it makes me question other parts as well..

Lol, I love guys like you. You are under the impression that I don't know what I'm talking about, even though my comments are based on substantial experience, yet you don't elaborate on WHY you think I'm wrong. The air suspension on these lincolns actually replaces the spring, when they break, you're losing your suspension, which causes the symptoms that I spoke of. The towncar is slightly better because it uses a spring up front and bags on the rear. The continental and Mark VIII use both an air strut and a rear air bag.

Dude.. You do not look that old.. Maybe 30.. But then again.. The older I get the younger you guys look... At any rate. You are not the only one with experience. The factory air springs are the way to go on these cars.. They last a long time and are an easy fix after 20 years or so when or if they start to leak.. My 93 Mark VIII is still all good.. But it only has 90 k on it. Also.. The 4.6 in the Mark 8 is an engineering marvel.. You really should stick to what you know.. Like Cursing the lord and spewing street vernacular. You excel at this as it seems to be your finest attributes.

You're close on my age. They start leaking a helluva lot sooner than 20 years, more like 10 years. Even if they did last 20 years, I had a 48 dodge on the original springs, so they're always going to be superior. Did I say they were a difficult fix? No I didn't. I merely say to watch out for them, because it's a common problem. I've never been impressed by the B head 4.6L, it had the dimensions of a boss 429 while displacing 281ci. The port velocity was so bad that they had to shut off an intake valve via an IMRC, which gets clogged up over time. Even with that, the torque is terrible. Much as I dislike the LT1, it was still making more power in a smaller platform. The C head cars were the way to go.

Buy a 2006 to 2011 they came with the updated transmissiom the 4r75r instead of the 4r70w used in the crown vics that are known to have problems with the front pumps in the transmissions. Took me way to much research to find that out. I bought a 2001 then found some info on this on wikipedia but it was lies told me that 2002 and up got the 4r75w so i bought a 2003 still have both of them.up for sale. Found out that had the 4r70w. Then i found the real info of the trannys geting the update on these and mercury grand marquis possibly all crown vis but might be just the police cars in 2006 and up. And checked with alot of people on facebook market place with them checking in there owners manuals for me and yea seems to be true 2006 and up cars got the updated transmission the 4r75w only way to find out that i know of is in the owmers manual itll say what transmission it has.
