Ray Guy: Remembering a Raiders Legend
The laughter echoed when, during the 1973 draft, he made the unusual selection of Ray Guy, a young standout as a punter. However the truth behind Al Davis' choice revealed itself as the insertion of the ultimate piece into a roster that bordered on perfection. The 1970s witnessed the Raiders not only for their dominance on the playing fields but also for their bold personality off them. Ray the unconventional punter, seamlessly harmonized with this constellation of talents.

Ray Guy could also throw the football 80 yards and was a back-up QB, had 18 interceptions as a safety, threw a no-hitter, and was a triple jumper.

Video missed a key to Ray's success. Hang-time, ie, how long it's in the air. A long kick is of little value if it's low, quickly caught and gives the returner time to make a long return. Ray's kicks were so high, in the air so long that the punting team had time to run down and cover punt returner. Fair catches were very common with Ray's punts. Easy to see how frustrated many of the fastest returners in the NFL were. Ray Guy was and still is the best ever.

That is a good point to wonder about. Billy White Shoes Johnson was one of the biggest threats returning kickoffs, as well as punts. I would venture to say there is probably no highlight film of him, or anyone else running back a punt for a TD against the Raiders You're right! Hang time was very critical, and prevented any blocking schemes set up by the returning team. I'm sure the Raiders gave up a few returns, but probably led the league.in giving up the fewest yards. Drafting him was a smart move. Most would find the kicking game very boring, but it was a vital part of football. Guy could back you up near your own endzone. It must have been a bad feeling for a QB to look at the opposition's goal line, and thinking it's miles, and miles away. lol!

In a book written by John Madden, the Raider coaching staff all wanted Ray because of Ray's punting ability. He became a weapon the Raiders used in field position. Hang time allowed special teams to pin the opposing team deep in their own territory.

Ray Guy deserves all the accolades as one of the best punters in NFL history. There is another punter close to him in greatness that is hardly known by fans under 65. Bobby Joe Green carried a 43 yard career average having to play half his games in Wrigley Field and another three games in Tiger Stadium, Lambeau Field, and Metropolitan Stadium in terrible weather. Green had the best hang time in the NFL in those days, and his pints were the hardest to handle and led to more fumbles.

Guy's ability to pin opponents deep against their own goal line, coupled with the legendary 70s & 80s Raiders defenses, often enabled their offense to work with a "short field." Imo, Guy was the greatest punter of all time, and his HOF induction was decades overdue.

His first ever blocked punt , was in SUPER BOWL 11 vs the vikings. The raider defense made a ferocious goal line stand and forced a fumble. The raiders went to defeat the vikings 32-14 and win their first SUPER BOWL 🏈.

I read Ray Guy's wiki bio after watching this video. In 2011 he filed bankruptcy and was forced to sell of his SB rings to satisfy his creditors, urgh!!!!!! Wasn't there any one in "Raider Nation" that could have helped him out? I am sure Guy being a proud Southerner didn't want charity .....but man. Really bummed me out. The Raiders tout that the organization is a closed knit family ....but they dropped the ball (no pun intended) on this one. RIP Mr. Guy and thank you for the memories!!!

10:20 is a still of Ray saving a bad snap early in the Super Bowl against the 'Skins. Beginning of the 2nd quarter, it was still 7-0 Raiders, and the 'Skins had just shut the Raiders down. The ball was still rising when Guy snagged it down, and gets off a great punt for a touchback. Had he not saved that play, Washington probably recovers it down around the Raider 20, and who knows...the whole game could have changed. Hell of an athlete. RIP Ray.

In SB XI Ray Guy made an incredible play to prevent the Vikings from scoring a Touchdown after getting his first ever Punt Blocked. 2 plays later the Vikings fumbled at the Raiders 2 yard line and the momentum of the game changed from that moment on. In SB XVIII Ray Guy saved the day again by making an incredible one hand catch on a high snap that would have went over the head of every punter in the NFL except for Ray Guy. After snagging the ball with one hand he hit a 50 yd punt that pinned the Redskins inside their own 15 yd line. If that ball goes over Guy’s head the game could have turned into a shootout
