Taking a detailed look at the workings and components of this amazing Steam Roller from Mamod.
After a number of year sitting, some rubber seals have perished, so we are taking a look at the service kit for this model and installing new washers, rubber seals and a new drive band.
This is the SR1a Model, released in 1972.
Hope you enjoy :)
Service kit includes:
-1 new drive band
-1 rubber seal for water level plug
-2 rubber seals for pressure release valve
-2 aluminium washers and a rubber seal for the whistle
Looking to get into Steam Models:
- Mamod Website - www.mamod.co.uk
Corrections:
- The drive mechanism is a slider crank mechanisms, with a rotating crank and crankshaft, not a cam and camshaft as quoted in the video.

I still have mine, an uncle bought it for me & I remember the price mark being on the box, £7.25 was a lot of money back then! When I was a bit older I told my Dad I was going to sell it to buy something else & he said he knew someone who wanted it so I gave it to him to pass on & he brought me some money back the next day & that was that. Forward another 25 or so years when I’m clearing out his house following his death & I find it squirrelled away in his wardrobe. Bless him.

It still looks as good as new. Even though there's no construction manual for this model steam roller.

That brought back some memories. I had the same one back in the 70,s and loved it but eventually traded it for a racing bike as I grew older. So wish I had kept it they are amazing pieces of nostalgia for me. Thanks for the detailed video.

Glad you enjoyed it :). A swap for a racing bike doesn't sound too bad haha. You could look out for a secondhand one, you can still pick them up for a pretty good price and still great fun.

i have got a mamod steam roller which i believe was built some time round 1970 and is very similar to the one that you have it belonged to a friend originally but i have since restored it to full working order and last year i got a modern day version of it with a sight glass

My mom bought me (well, us really) one of these when I was maybe six or seven years old...I thought for sure it'd gone the way of the dodo, but I actually found it a couple years ago. Still haven't gotten around to restoring and running it though, but I probably will in the next month or so. Mine uses the solid fuel tablets and has a sight glass, but otherwise it's identical to yours.

Hey im trying to clean up an old model engine I have, not sure what model exactly. it has a red boiler but no reverser. my steam whistle will only unscrew partially before becoming stuck (?) the bit that does unscrew feels as though it is being pulled back down by a spring and I can't fully remove the whistle for replacing or cleaning, any ideas? thanks!

Hi Harrison. Hmm, I was trying to find some pictures online to see what model it was, but no luck. did you ever find out? Maybe there's some sort of nut holding it together from inside the tank, and you need a long or special spanner to loosen it? Or maybe there's a broken or sticky o-ring holding the shaft in place. I'll let you know if I come across anything like that. Would be interesting to find out. You would think it would be completely removable for servicing.

Thanks for posting. I recently purchased an old steam roller on ebay and with a bit of work got it running. But seeing this is a 1972 model I am even more impressed. Mine is clearly older with only one exhaust pipe & solid sided wheels and rollers yet it runs pretty well. I do have one question if anyone knows. My front roller is made of two pieces, why is that?
@davidwarwick3405
@davidwarwick3405 22 күн бұрын
As on a fill size Steam Roller, if the front Roller was solid, when turning to the right or left, the Roller would tend to loose grip, and skitter across the surface. By splitting the Roller into two, this allows the half roll nearest to the inner turn radius to move more slowly than the opposite half roll on the outer radius of the turn, thus improving grip and giving a tighter turn radius. This is in effect a simple differential action. Similarly. the rear wheels on a traction engine are locked to the rear axel by removeable pins. When turning, the inner turn radius pins is removed temporarily, allowing that wheel to "freewheel", the rear wheel on the outer turn radius, still being locked to the rear axel is driven thus effectively having a differential effect, improving grip and giving a tighter and consistent turn. Hope this helps Kind regards. olscuriosity
