Explained: How FPV technology works - ANALOG

RC planes and drones increasingly rely on first-person view (FPV) video systems. This is a new whiteboard video explaining exactly how analog FPV technology for drones and RC planes works. This is part of a series of videos in which I will explain the technology behind the three major FPV systems:
- analog FPV
- Fatshark's digital FPV
- DJI's digital FPV
Let me know in the comments if the virtual white-board will do the job or if I should blow $500 on a new "real" white-board.
Also, if anything was unclear, feel free to ask a question.

Bruce, you might be able to answer this question about analog resolution. Now the term standard def is from the TV (625 TV lines) in fact there is also standard for Analog HD (1280 TV Lines) which was around in the early days of HD tv's. A typical FPV camera that say its 1000 lines and is a 4:3 sensor does that mean the camera has a resolution of 1000x750 and the 1000x750 picture is been transmitted back to your goggles. So in effect if your FPV camera has a 1200 TV Lines sensor then what you would see in the goggles would be near to the resolution of a 720p HD, 1200x900 (4:3) or 1200x675 (16:19) a analogue system is not bothered about how many lines are fed to it.

Great comprehensive explanation about the matter! Only thing I have to add is the rapidfire explanation talks about antenna diversity (where you switch for the stronger received signal) as opposed to receiver diversity (switching for the better image). additionally rapidfire like clearview and others do some post processing on the output image itself too combining both received images in a clever way If I'm not mistaken

The tablet white boards never look as good. Try cleaning with 80% window cleaner and 20% OF 50% OR LESS isopropyl. Always use a soft cloth, if you can do final sanding, it's too rough. Very clear. Thanks. No snow in your explanations. So I suppose you are digital. 😃 There is one thing I don't understand. Why is analog video stuck to the PAL or SECAM low definitions. Why didn't the FPV video industry come up with another standard ? With a higher definition ?

Great presentation! I like the new white board. I'm looking forward to your videos on digital fpv. If we can use a digital 2.4ghz cotrol signal to fly with dozens of others then why can't we use a 5.8 ghz digital video signal to do the same?
@RCModelReviews
@RCModelReviews 3 жыл бұрын
We can fly multiple RC systems on 2.4GHz because each system uses only a very small amount of the available band. Video, on the other hand, requires a huge amount of the band and therefore we are far more likely to see one system interfering with another. Also, with digital RC, the receivers (because they're digital) are able to ignore interfering signals to quite high degree. Analog FPV receivers have no such ability so are even more susceptible to interference.

Great video Bruce, very clear explanation and I love the digital white board. One thing I think you may have overlooked in terms of latency is the fact that the 4 components the image is passed through (camera, VTX, VRX and then screen) are not in sync with each other. The image data passed between each component has to wait for the next cycle before the data is passed. Wouldn't this mean every time you plug in you will get a different latency depending on how close the component clocks are running? I have found another source of latency can occur when trying to record latency from a moment in time to the screen, because of the time between the event (led light turning on for example) and the camera shutter. This subject has been bugging me for ages and would love to hear you opinions.

Outstanding presentation, and your white board diagrams were great too! Really helped me to understand the basic system of analog video. Could you provide an explanation of how the resolution of the camera does or does not affect the delivered resolution of in the goggles? For example if my camera has a resolution of 800x600 pixels but my display system has a max resolution of 1024x720 pixels, what will the image resolution be in the display system? OR if the camera has a resolution of 1000x720, but my display system (binocular goggle or LCD) only has a max resoultion of 800x600, what will the image be rendered to and how does that happen? Will the camera image simply be cropped to 800x600? You may need to make a separate video to address this, but I have wondered about it forever, but nobody so far has been willing to answer this question. My question has practical relevance when we need to decide how much to spend on our camera for a given, more limited display/recording system. Does the higher resolution camera help get more detail in the display system images or not? You are the best! - Jim

Hi Bruce Great information. But one thing !!! HIGH SCHOOL FLASHBACK !!! LOL ! This one is a great way of explaining what is out there. But I think that you might have missed one. WIFI ! I had started flying quads years ago and I started with a system that used WIFI and it was the worst thing to fly with. I do wish DJI could be more affordable and I could switch over. But until then I will be using Analog. Thanks again for the video and information. And I will be looking forward to the rest.

Very useful explanation. Though I have often been confused by camera quoted specifications regarding latency. Think they are either PAL (25) or NTSC (30) frames/sec - or 50/60 if you consider interlaced fields? Taking NTSC, the field to field delay is about 16mS then, sampling at 60Hz per pixel pair. I guess CCD with a global shutter will introduce an extra field's delay compared to a CMOS rolling shutter. So when a camera advertises 'low latency - 6mS' or whatever, what does it mean in reality? Information theory shows that when you get towards a frequency of 1/2 the sampling rate, things go seriously wrong due to aliasing, so it seems to me that quoting such low delays is a bit misleading? Furthermore, where would extra latency/delay between cameras come from - presumably only by low pass filtering the signal (each pixel) over past samples to reduce noise. But, that costs silicon so it seems likely the cheapest cameras are likely to do less of that. So, when they quote latencies of 6mS or so, are they really quoting the time constant of any per pixel filtering, which is completely separate to the field rate, and if so, does it really mean anything?

The digital whiteboard is fine. Bit it would be nice to also see your “talking head” somewhere. What I don’t understand is the wifi disturbance you talked about. The wifi router is on the same frequency, so why isn’t the FPB image not completely blown away when are close to your wifi router? Does the VRX “recognize” the FPV image in some way?

When do you expect to continue that mini series cause I have watched it and watched it now again cause I am on the edge of moving "back" from DJI goggles, but that very second edition called Goggles Racing edition that had been released for Mavic 2 Pro as a successor of the first goggles, the white ones. Those red ones came out before the FPV goggles appeared and these red one support the dji digital system and its air unit as the analog world too. I had gotten that for Mavic 2 use but when Ian had unveiled and explained the possibilities of those regarding FPV I went back and purchased analog video transmission that came along with ZOHD copilot as a kit for Mini talon Evo or what it was called. So far so good but I do not want to trust DJI and its decisions about depreciating the current FPV goggles by stopping support or not cause I have been in that spot once and I am quite happy to use those red goggles for analog too since they stopped to sell air units for the red goggles and prices for those used air units have exploded. So I had been lucky to still use those and of cause of the value increase since the goggles itself also gained value on the used market too. Long story short: I am keen to build my own system since I watched a really great and indepth interview on ItsBlunty with the creator and inventor Davice from the open BLUE HD system earlier this year. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gd6hhpCG3p2agX0.html And I am thinking to go on or start with OPEN HD cause it is supporting a full OSD and iNAV incl. expressLRS on an affordable platform that runs a camera with a powerfull 3b mini "pi clone" (which equals a Pi 3B but of the size and weight of a ZERO). That has been covered partly by mario here in a long distance fpv scenario kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btuYmcukvNTMcnk.html He has done a lot of stuff also on the inav fixed wing group site but I wanted to understand a bit more in general before I start buying stuff for an upcoming winter project. And I guess you can judge the best how it fits among these systems cause I do not wanna rely again on dji's fate or business decisions anymore even though I like their products in general from the point of convenience as a dji drone pilot and plane tinkerer, but not as a drone builder which I never had done. thanks Bruce
