Some great points were brought up in the comments of the original video including that I was not using my meter to check the resistance of the circuit correctly when I did the resistance check on the knock sensor therefore I HAD to make this video covering that mistake along with video of doing the test properly and how to set the multimeter. I also take the opportunity to show the different settings on a DVOM and how to use them so I think this video stands on it's own just for that purpose.
Here's a link to the original video.

This old electronic tech watched the previous one and caught that you were using the continuity range, rather than a higher range to test for high resistance. Glad you caught that and did this video. But another thing: the sensors are supposed to put out a certain voltage, in the millivolt range, depending on the frequency of the knock. It's often proportional to the frequency, unless you're using a flat-response sensor, like a Delphi. Their info on that is here: www.delphi.com/manufacturers/auto/sensors/engine-and-transmission/diesel-and-gasoline/flat-response-knock - and you'll see that it's pretty flat, putting out (spec.) about 27mV at mid-range of 9kHz. What you could've done with the old sensor is put your DVOM on a low AC volts scale, clip your leads as before (one to the ground, other to the sensor connector) and then tap on the block with a wrench to see if it put out any voltage. A DVOM with a peak hold feature makes it easier to see what the peak voltage was. If you're not getting something, hopefully close to what the Delphi sensor spec is, then you know it's the sensor - and not the wiring, as is sometimes the case. IF you DO get a few millivolts - even something low - then you'd want to go downstream of the sensor with the connector back on it, all the way to the ECU if necessary, and do the same to see if the wiring is bad. In the "olden days" we'd check the entire circuit, then divide the circuit in half, check again, then in half again until we found the section that was bad if there was one (or more) connectors in between the component being measured and where the signal was supposed to be coming out.

Yo man so I had a knock sensor CEL on and replaced the sensor 3 times thinking they were bad sensors. but not knowing I was accidentally connecting the power steering plug into the knock sensor and the knock sensor plug into the power steering plug. Once I found out I switched the plugs but the cel was still on and I drove it about 200 miles now and still on. Could I have broken all the sensors I bought by plugging the power steering plug into it? I have also checked continuity it beeps every time so I know the harness is good. Should I just buy another plug and try it again? I have a 2000 civic with a d16y8 engine

Because I got the P0325 code sensor 1 bank 1 says there circuit bank one, and I don't know how to test it. My car is toyota 4runner 1999 3rd generation. I just got 2 days ago this code. The starter solenoid (small wire) typically receives a current when you turn the key to crank the engine. When this happens, two events occur: the pin that engages with the flywheel to start the engine moves forward, and an attached mechanism slides to make contact with the big connector to the starter motor itself. Thus it rotates until you release the key from crank. The pin is spring loaded and goes back into the starter when the engine fires. I assume you have a no start no crank situation?

Hello Eric! Have being Long Time Subscriber and i really enjoy your educating Videos! I am trying to Help Out a friend with His European CL9 Accord K24A3, he is getting the P0325 Code, We have tried so far to test the voltage of the sensor as you showed on the video, we had somewhere arround 11.94 Volt on it, we have also the Honda diagnostic system HDS HIM (not the original one) and we even tried to troubleshoot the problem with the instructions given from the service manual, which include testing if there is a short circuit etc... Everything was ok, of course we raplaced the sensor as well, 2 times, the 2nd one is a very expensive original from Honda, the problem still occurs, (we even changed the knock sensor wire) with the HDS we even tried to test the VTC and we get everytime failed test and the lamp goes on, (the VTC Test is about testing the values of what is supposed to be with the current values and we also tested the camshaft sensors from vtc and were ok) as we were driving arround with the HDS connected and as i was seeing live data by it, i found out that whenever the Check engine light comes on that the voltage of the knock sensor goes from regularly 0.04 - 0.06 -8 to 0.... If you have any idea of a possible troubleshoot would be very much appreciated and will get you some more subs just for the sake of helping! Friendly regards and much love From Europe Sir!

Resistance checks can be tricky as the device you are checking can change resistance depending on how much current is passed through it. So some older meters will pass more current than newer digitals so unless you know you are testing a resistor or peice of wire the results can be foggy. some meters send the current the wrong way so semiconductor devices may not appear to work. Smashing recap eric :-)

What causes the throttle to not throttle at the throttle body. I have a gmc suv that all of a sudden reduced engine power and the traction control light came on. The parts place put the computer diagnostic thing to it and got code u0107. It won't let the engine rev at all and this is the first time I've had an issue with my truck. Im sure why but just about 15 to 20 minutes prior to this malfunction I bought sum of 50 dollars gas noticing that my fuel light was on.

@Desterado in this video. ERIC said the "auto range" feature wasn't good enough because it did not go high enough. Example: you have bricks on a pully. Put the rope is only long enough to pull the bricks up to the window of the house. You need them on top of the house. Though this may be easier, it is not a good option.

If you cross the prongs, you'll either see a resistance reading or you'll find continuity. If the bolt goes through the center of the sensor, like this one did, then put the ground prong there, or on the negative battery post.

great video! Im just gonna add some point, The beep function is not really an auto range, that function is really just dedicated to continuity test and depending to a meter that beep function will not work or give you infinite resistance if the resistance is greater than 20k ohms or depending to the specs of your meter. thats why i never use that beep function even doing continuity check, because it my give you a false indication.

The auto ranging function is for continuity tests for things like fuses. Which means that if there is close to no resistance, it beeps. Which is great for testing fuses, because close to no resistance=good fuse, lost of resistance=dead fuse because there is no connection from one side to the other. In other words, your test was correct the first time. If it beeped, there was no break in the circuit, since it didn't beep, it meant the resistance was too high and the knock sensor was broken.

I think it is safe to say "On MOST vehicles". Some sensors DO VARY. Detonation detection methods vary. You need to know WHICH TYPE of sensor is being used. Field effect (transistorized) and coil, are two types that I know of, to consider. Field Effect sensors CAN BE DAMAGED by "probing" so BE CAREFUL.

Unfortunately, Eric, the green-printed Auto-Range scales on the meter are almost impossible to read on camera. They are all but invisible, even on close-ups. When held in the light ju-u-u-ust right, the characters can just barely be made out. (Ghost flames, anyone?) Caused me just a bit of confusion, anyway.

Hello Eric, can you read this and help me out? Thank you. My Nissan Quest engine seized so I had to replace the engine. I was going to scrap it, but wife said no, fix it okay wifey.... I bought a nissan quest engine with fairly low miles for 350 only at a junk yard shop. A mechanic, which I don't know him very well, put the engine in. After a week, he called in and said the van is ready. My wife was happy so I did too. 50% of the Problem : I drove the van from his shop without issue, but I've noticed two things, first one, the fan was on all the time. Probably he couldn't fix the automatic kick on. Second, the alignment was off. Serious problem: I drove it today, and the engine wants to stall. The rpm is high and runs rough. When you want to accelerate, the engine seems to be flooded or something choks it. I had to drive it very slowly on interstate with only 40-45 mph with hazards on. Hint: This mechanic is very busy. Today, I popped the hood and found couple stuff that he have forgotten to tighten them up. 1. There is no bolts on fuse boxes under the hood. 2. the radiator hose that goes to the thermostat housing was not clamped on. Water was leaking. 3. Cable harness was not tightening up. 4. Battery was no placed in the correct position. Is this mechanic trustable? I would say that he did something wrong to my car. Your insights much appreciated. I scanned the emission port, and come up with 2 codes that are belonging to the O2 sensors. I am a light mechanic, but I don't thing the O2 sensors would cause this problem. What would it be the issue? Today, the mechanic said the problem could a knock sensor. But there is not code for knocking sensor. Thanks again.

i don't know why, but the kknock sensor u r testig works diferent than the ones who we have here (argentina). here the knoks sensors don't have a 5volts reference, because they are "voltage generators" for diagnosig it u have to put ur multimeter in alternant voltage and toch both kock's sensors terminal. sorry for my bad english, i hope u can understand me.

depends on what broke, the pulley ore the little axle where it sat on, if it whas the pulley you can replace that ( i ques cause on most vehicles it will ) if its the little axle your pretty much screwed, you either need to replace the part where that pulley sat on i.e. alternator, waterpump, power steering pump, airco compressor. but if it whas the crank your toast.
