I think parents who are disappointed or even embarrassed by their kids are really only thinking about their own needs: gaining approval of their friends, family, and peers, being validated as a good parent, etc

Anyone else never had someone treat them like that? Where are the caring people. I sure can't find any. I know that they must be out there, somewhere

I agree. I’ve decided God keeps putting challenging people in my path so that I learn to recognize people that are trying to take advantage of me/stop people pleasing, and learn how to establish boundaries. It’s a long exhausting road, but apparently I signed up for it in this lifetime.

I don’t know of any family like this. People carry down the dysfunction from generation to generation. I suppose awareness can help break the cycle. Listening to Tim Fletcher makes me realize how invalidated I was.

My husband is so kind and respectful. We both had a lot of work to do to get to where we are now but it has been worth the work. 43 years married. There is hope!

I like how Tim uses "loving" behavior as a synonym for "healthy" behavior because that really is how we know what love and health mean. If it's not healthy, it's not love. If it's love, it will lead to healthiness.

Is it even possible to find someone in the world who will give you all 8 of these things at once? Because I never have, and I don't think I ever will.

Yes, I believe there are those out there in recovery from the same soul wounds that know how important this is, and even if they can’t do it perfectly, they will continue to get up and try everyday because they know it makes their life fuller to give the gift to someone else.

Agree with all the eight so far, but not the appreciation one. That comes from an unmet need 32:35. Validation is not praise. Thats the type of thing people seek via social media for instance. Validation is listening, accepting and understanding your child. You have the wrong definition of validation 33:14. 33:14 they feel love when they believe they are loved.

My grandma mom and aunt would get worried and agitated if I did something to meet my own needs - they had to get involved and disrupt me if I sat on a chair, laid down to rest, ate or exercised. Like they have to feel dominant over me meeting my needs and if I kill myself inside and act like a dead passive animal focused on pleasing them, then they feel happy and at peace.
