When I took FPU, one thing I couldn't get past is how weak Ramsey's system is against the fragility of life. Regardless of my financial situation, my life could be gone tomorrow or my quality of life greatly diminished due to an accident, etc. If I decided to spend the next 10 years waiting to live and only eat rice and beans and never go out with friends or go on vacation and then died tomorrow, my life would have been so empty just because I valued my net worth more than my life's worth. Yes, I want to attack my debt with ferocity, but there is a balance in everything. I refuse to work myself to death just so I can have nice things and do fun things when I am too old to enjoy them anymore. There is more to life than money which you would think a proclaiming Christian like Dave would agree with.

You're very right. But unfortunately many people tend to live so far above their means when doing what you said, that they never get out of debt. Many people struggle to say no to things they really could do without and it wouldn't affect their quality of life if they didn't have those extra things. They struggle to find the right balance.

I'm so happy you put out this video. As someone who followed him in the 90s, I just have to say how much more debt I got into because of his advice. $1000 wasn't enough back then, either. He's really a big pile of condescending poop. 😂

But as bad as his financial advice is, nothing is as bad as his personal views, firing a woman for being pregnant while unmarried. And he claims to be pro life. Can you think of a better incentive to get an abortion than to hide it from your boss to keep employed. And what better way to show how much you support mothers and your commitment to life than making the baby start out life with a mother with no income, because Dave Ramsey didn't think the mother was perfect. Well, no mothers are, so he could always find something.

I've had multiple emergencies that cost over $1k since I started budgeting. If I followed his plan, I wouldn't have the money to fix my water heater and furnace when they both broke in the same month. Absolutely ridiculous to think his plan is universal.

YES!!!! Everyone needs to watch this video. As someone who is trying to get their finances under control Dave Ramsey and other Finance Gurus make me so disheartend. It just doesn't seem sustainable unless everything goes perfect and well that isn't life. I know one person who has done FPU but they also made upwards of 100,000 a year. Very different then someone making 35,000 or less working customer service jobs. Contiue your message, girl! As soon as I save enough money, I definitely will be looking into your course. My wife and I are looking to really start focusing more effort towards paying off debt.

Anyone who says the system doesn't need to change is not directly affected or oppressed by the system in place. He can preach all he likes, but the fact is he has a fuk ton of privileges, and he didn't get to where he is without implementing those privileges, and stepping on others. He treats people like they are the problem when he, and people who share his ideals, ARE THE PROBLEM. He claims people got themselves into "this mess", when the mess in question was designed by a capitalist system that rewards the already wealthy [read as: generationally wealthy] and tears down the rest while simultaneously reaping off their hard labor. Why change the system when it works soooo well for him?

Haha most people that are in debt did actually do it to themselves. Of course not always, sometimes life sucks and debt happens. But way too often it's because people made stupid choices that put them into debt and they continue to make stupid choices that keeps them in debt for a long time.

Dave should warn people that if you eat nothing but rice and beans for months, you don't get a million dollars, you get scurvy. Enjoy your bleeding gums and slow, painful death! (But dying with less debt is...winning?) I also find it amusing that he just cannot fathom that not everyone *wants* to be a millionaire. In the unlikely event that I ever have a million bucks, I'd much rather feed the hungry than swim Scrooge McDuck style in my giant swimming pool full of cash.

I customized my own intensity. It was still very sacrificing and intense. Trust me. However, my son deserved a great senior year of high school and a comfortable first year of college and I took on the sacrifice myself. I lived frugally and paid off over $19K of debt in less than 2 years and also saved a small emergency fund and enough for my son to buy a car. I have multiple income streams and was able to make extra money for every day expenses. I still have a car that I finance at a great rate and a mortgage but my debt is nearly paid off. I budget every day. And LOVE budgeting. It's changed my life, but I don't need to have my son, fiancé or anyone I love suffer. It's all me.

The $1000 is just to start out with if you do not have any money or have a lot of debt then you grow your emergency fund to 3 times your expenses WHEN you can. I do not agree with cutting all your credit cards because in this economy you do need credit to get most big purchases, however, I do think the methods of paying off your debt are good. He does talk condescendingly but at the same time I don’t take that personally. The base concept of his baby steps aren’t bad. I think people are getting caught up in his personality and I get that but these steps to me aren’t inherently bad. Anyways good luck everyone. Debt sucks

"Live like no one else so later you can live like no one else" - it's good advice if you want to live an exceptional life. If you want to be mediocre you can wallow in debt for 10 years rather than dig deep for 2 or 3 years. If you have the means to get out of debt, why would you not?

The first babystep is horrible, save only $1000 if in debt, and if he's had that for 25 years, inflation more than doubled in that time period. So he's technically telling people to save less than half of what he told people back in the day. Because I have student loans, he would demand I have $1,000 in the bank only and put the rest towards student loans (which itself would be insane as they will be forgiven for me in 2 years by PSLF, and he doesn't support that either). Thankfully, I dont listen to him and keep closer to about $8,000 in the bank at all times, which made a world of difference for me when a pipe burst over my living room ruining it. If I only had $1,000, I'd be screwed having to pay contractors while waiting for insurance to reimburse me.

My husband (then boyfriend) and I followed Dave's plan to a T starting in 2016. Cut back on frivolous expenses, traveled on a budget, had a lowkey wedding, practiced contentment in our simple happy life, and worked hard doing jobs we love. We paid off my $45k student loans in 18 months and just two weeks ago we paid off our $550k home. We can donate to our favorite causes without even thinking about it. We don't owe shit to anyone and can retire in under a decade if we want to. We're in our mid-30s standing at the summit of life, and have Dave to thank for giving us the focus and intensity. I say all this because you're wrong when you write him off as a "toxic, heartless, money hungry evil capitalist." His plan hasn't changed in 25 years because if it ain't broke, don't fix it. No one plan is a one-size-fits-all, but shitting on the Ramsey plan makes you just look salty. For everyone reading this, especially if you're neurodivergent or come from little means like me: Grab inspiration *wherever* you can find it and ignore the rest. (But obv this girl needs to mention him in her titles for clout.)

Also if you listen to him, he says $1000 wasn’t enough in the 90s. So I don’t know why you keep saying he says $1000 is enough. It’s about kicking your butt to make you get your shit together.
@TheAvocadoToastBudget
@TheAvocadoToastBudget Жыл бұрын
That’s literally the basis of his first 2 baby steps. So if he doesn’t think $1k is enough, why would he recommend people to only have that much until they pay off all their debt (other than their mortgage)? Which he clearly states in this video takes an average of 18 months. That’s putting people’s financial stability at risk. And I don’t believe that risk is worth it just for the sake of “kicking people’s ass to make them get their shit together”.

@@TheAvocadoToastBudget you only have $1000 while you pay off debt.. then you find a 3-6 month emergency fund.. the $1000 is for small emergencies, like a tire, or alternator going bad…also most people don’t even have $1000 so why can’t they go 18 months with $1000?

You are living in a fantasy world. There isn't a country in the world, where people can just live without any worries. That is called Utopia and it doesn't exist. It doesn't matter what type of government or social system a country may have... be it capitalism, socialism or communism. There are restrictions/limitations for everyone, there are poor and rich people and the in-betweens. A good life and rich life is not a "right" for anyone, it's an option. This video sounds like the victim olympics. I don't agree with the $1k emergency fund, it is not enough. I don't agree with his harsh approach or that "his" plan is the "only" plan. But I don't agree with the broken record of systemic racism and oppression. No one is going to succeed if that is all they are told & the song being sung nonstop. That is just an "excuse" blanket to wrap themselves in to justify their situations. People do get tired, people do get discriminated against, people do struggle with paying debt. These are all facts. But I would rather hear that I can do it, than being just told over and over that the system is against me and it's okay that I don't try harder or succeed.

I never claimed that there’s this elusive world where people live worry free. I said it’s not a bad thing for people to wish they didn’t have to struggle to afford basic necessities. If my perspective on personal finance doesn’t motivate or work for you, that’s totally fine! Just like I said in the video, it’s unrealistic to expect one person/piece of advice will work for everyone. But I’m perfectly fine sounding like a “broken record of systemic racism and oppression” if it means people feel less shame & guilt over their finances. In my eyes, it’s not making excuses, it’s holding space for the reality that while personal finance education and changes to our behavior with money can make a huge difference, not every money problem is a budgeting problem and there are factors at play outside of people’s control. And I’ll always believe that as a personal finance educator, it’s my responsibility to acknowledge those systems and be honest about the limitations of money management.
