The fight with copyright continues but here we are, trying to upload as much as possible! Thank you for taking this beautiful Pet Sounds journey with me, see you soon Beach Boys, until next time... but I guess that's the real question, when does NEXT time land? Perhaps sooner, perhaps later. Watch out, your favorite album, band, artist or song could be up next! I LOVE YOU!
p.s. I actually tried to express my gratitude for you guys and all of your support and kindness towards me during this video but I decided to cut that part out because I literally started sobbing and got really unprofessional and lost all composure, I will keep trying and hopefully it will come out cleanly eventually. But I do want you to know that in these most difficult and unbearable times you have allowed me to laugh and smile and given me joy when I thought it wasn't possible. You are a true gift. I am grateful each and everyone of you are alive. Truly and deeply love you.
SOME FUN THINGS!

“Pet Sounds” is a concept album. It’s a State of the Mind address from Brian Wilson on where he was at that moment. The whimsical, free-wheeling bliss of young love in “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “You Still Believe In Me”, the pangs of young adulthood in “That’s Not Me”, “I Know There’s An Answer”, and “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times”, the escapist flights of fancy in “Let’s Go Away For Awhile”, “God Only Knows”, and “Sloop John B”, the soul-crushing romanticism of “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)”, “I’m Waiting For The Day”, and “Caroline No”. I love how the album ends with a train and Brian’s dogs, Banana and Louie, barking. To me, this unexpected ending to the album symbolizes Brian waking up from a dream. You can almost see it as a scene from a film. The protagonist’s awakening both literally and spiritually. It is a masterpiece of art and a sound painting that should be hanging on a wall in the Louvre.

Enjoyed your reaction to this album! Listen to "SMiLE Sessions" which would have followed this album in 1967 but was abandoned. It was assembled and released decades later in 2011 to high acclaim. By the way, B. Wilson is Brian Wilson, the one responsible for putting The Beach Boys together and the genius behind them. He was their main creative force, producer, songwriter, original group leader and vocalist.

Along with the Smile Sessions, I highly recommend "Brian Wilson Presents Smile" (2005). Even though Brian completed it without the rest of the group, it is an amazingly-produced completion of Smile, that reflects how much he intended it as a song-cycle with connected songs and medleys, much like side 2 of Abbey Road... I also return over and over to the Beach Boys 2012 reunion album (with Brian) "That's Why God Made the Radio" which impressed me with it's catchiness and emotional depth (side 2 in particular)...

The chordal journey of God Only Knows is just insanely beautiful and a masterclass in using chord inversions to take you interesting places. There are a ton of things one could delve into, but my favorite moment is how Brian returned to the original verse key after the middle section. That middle section is the same chordal structure as the verse, but up a 4th. In the original key, the verse starts in D and winds up with the hook “God only knows what I’d be without you” over A. In the new key, it starts with G and winds up with the hook being sung in D, our original verse key; and in doing so, effortlessly flows back into the original verse. So it’s actually resolving the middle section, like normal, but it’s kind of being used as an uplifted opening to the final verse, which is how I always heard it, because he didn’t do a turn around bar afterwards to reset like he did in the rest of the song. Absolutely brilliant.

Crystal, you are not alone in feeling emotional listening to this album or any great album or piece of music. I can’t tell you how many times this album has made me cry tears of joy and pain. It never fails to hit me in the feels. It makes sense for music to move you whether you feel joy, pain, laughter, anger, etc. The worst experience is when you feel nothing. It reminds me of a quote from John Lennon when he said, “My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.” That’s the connection we all have here, Crystal. It’s the bond you share with your father and I’m one who doesn’t believe in coincidence. I could be wrong, but I like to think those vibes which keep following you around is an angel looking out for you. It’s like that quote from the movie “Fools Rush In”: “the signs are everywhere”. Music is the best medicine for the soul and you have only just begun this musical journey which I guarantee you only gets better. Crystal, whenever you find yourself having a challenging day where it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and know that you’re not alone and all of us here are here for you and with you. I am so happy you enjoyed this album and I encourage you to check out “Smile” next. It’s a very different album from this one, but very good.

I definitely recommend checking out other Beach Boys albums, like Today, Sunflower or the legendary SMiLE sessions (an unfinished follow up to Pet Sounds which was supposed to be Brian's magnum opus blowing out Pet Sounds out of the water, it was very ambitious project that got released after many years in 2011, considered by many to be Brian Wilson's best work despite being unfinished which says a lot about quality of the music). I'm sure you'll love them! Btw, you probably know this, but God Only Knows is Paul McCartney's favorite song.

I would add that one of my favourite purchases in the past 20 years as being that of the “Pet Sounds Sessions “, where one gets to hear the monophonic version, the stereo version, unused tracks AND, best of all, listen in on Brian Wilson giving direction to the famous wrecking Crew as they record his carefully charted instrumentation! It is worth the price whatever it is/was. It is so enlightening as to how his visions were already so real to him that this young man was in total control of the greatest players available in LA without being snotty, discourteous or pushy. One has to hear it for one’s self. I hope that you have, or will have, the opportunity.

Brian Wilson has said that the inspiration for "Caroline, No" was from his days in school. Back in the early part of elementary school, he was best friends with this girl who always hung out and played with Brian at recess. They both really liked each other. Then once they moved into middle/high school and puberty kicked in, she became this incredibly beautiful girl that was accepted into the good-looking well-off elite clique. Almost immediately, she stopped hanging around with Brian; because why hang around with this tall, lanky, awkward and incredibly shy dweeb from years before when you get into a clique with much cooler friends and an increased chance to date one of the better-looking guys in school? (Btw, to this day, 60-some years later, he's never revealed who that girl was so as to not hurt his wife's feelings.) The train at the end really threw me off when I heard the song for the first time. Fun Fact: The two dogs barking along with the train horn were Brian's two beagle dogs he and his first wife had that were called Banana and Louie.

You are very perceptive and sensitive to the genius of Brian Wilson and what he was trying to convey through melody, instrumentation, tone colour, and lyrics. I enjoyed your Pet Sounds reaction ..your genuine enthusiasm, appreciation, honestly expressing how moved you were and your musical knowledge, how you were able to point out different things going on. It's great to see a young person appreciate this masterpiece and see a young musician discover it .. By the way, during You still believe in me, that unique delicate piano intro and I think other parts was Brian Wilson plucking the actual piano strings while the lyricist for the album(Tony Asher) held the keys down.. Brian had over 20 musicians in the studio, he wrote and arranged all the music, directed each of them, wrote all the harmony parts and directed the other beach boys and produced the album and he was about 23 .. some of the unique sounds on the album was different instruments playing the same notes to create a different sound .. If you get a chance, even just for yourself, have a listen to the Smile sessions, this was the unfinished masterpiece that was to follow Pet Sounds .. The music and the harmonies take you to another planet, to such a beautiful place, so unique, beautiful , sweet, dynamic and more .. I'm sure it will blow your mind and move you .. Brian always has the goal of expressing love in his music, something that sets the beach boys and his solo work apart, like a warm blanket around your soul .. By the way, I appreciate your authentic expression at the end of the video of what you've been going through, that takes courage :) you have a lovely singing voice too ,, peace

I have been listening to the BB for 50 years and your review of "I just wasnt made for these times", where you mentioned the disharmony or craziness of the dual voicings in the chorus. I know that this is one of Brian's personal moody songs (because this song is a Brian solo, all voices are his and he insisted on making it that way) that fits in with In My Room, Til I die and many, many others. It just hit me that this is about the time that he started hearing voices in his head, the bad voices, that would tell him that he wasn't good enough or that he would die, and that to overcome them he would just try to sing or write songs the best he could, but over a decade he succumbed to the voices in his head, only to reconcile and deal with them and recover. This song is ALL ABOUT BRIAN... I keep trying to find the people....

Good to see you back & reacting to great records! If there's ever an album to get emotional listening to, this is it. One of the great things about Pet Sounds is how Brian Wilson (with the help of his co-writer, Tony Asher) really opened up his heart and showed his vulnerability for all the world to see, while at the same time delivering a musical masterpiece. Also a nifty tidbit: There are four different lyrics being sung more or less simultaneously during the chorus of "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times,": “Sometimes I feel very sad” “Ain’t found the right thing I can put my heart and soul into” "Oh, ¿cuándo seré? Just my private take, Holland seems to be not very well known, and Brian is nearly absent on it, but it is a fantastic album, and I have sometimes thought that Holland, the style of it, and the songs on it was in a way, the other Beach Boys conceding that Brian’s new direction starting with Pet Sounds was a good direction after all. “Leaving This Town” is a good example… it takes you on a hypnotic journey. I didn’t get into The Beach Boys until I was around 28yrs old. The first song that got me hooked to The Beach Boys was “Add some music to your day”; which initially I thought was a Beatles song. I then discovered “Pet Sounds”, “SMiLE” and a live version of California Girls on Johnny Carson that converted me into a die hard Beach Boys fan. I lost my Mother and Father at a fairly young age of 33 and listening to the Boys soothed me through that whole ordeal.

Crystal, please continue to take care of yourself. Unfortunately with age and experience comes some loss and regret that can rob us of our light when we least expect it. But whether you can make it on camera or not, I hope the music we all share will continue to bring you new light and inspiration. No matter how much we hurt, songs like God Only Knows or In My Life or (fill in your best) are always there for comfort and,as you put it, delicate joyfulness. (Totally stealing that phrase!l

I'm not usually fond of when people chop up the music and normally carry on my way. You; however, are a delight to watch/listen to. Your musical insight is fantastic, as well. Maybe you should check out a rock opera: Tommy, Quadrophenia, The Wall, etc.

Loving your reactions. As a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fanatic since the early days, I MUST make some album recommendations: "Friends" - best with the lights low, just let the vibe wash over you; "Love You" - a masterpiece in a completely different way than Pet Sounds - just a few instruments and great songwriting "Sunflower" another masterpiece with the whole band producing; "Beach Boys Today!" the brilliant forerunner of Pet Sounds. There are more, but these will get you started.

🐕 Although the two albums that came immediately after this one were "Smiley Smile" and "Wild Honey," I would recommend listening to the one that came after those two next. "Friends" covers similar lyrical territory, but the production style is pretty much the polar opposite of "Pet Sounds," with no echo at all on the instruments, and very little on the vocals, giving the LP an extremely cozy and intimate feel.

As you mentioned during I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, there are conflicting lines being sung at the same time. If you listen closely, you can hear a third line being sung in Spanish underneath the two more prominent ones.

Shannon! Should of been here in 66. Very few people knew about this album. I listened to it exactly as Brian had meant. Alone, in my room with headphones hooked up to my phonograph. Pet Sounds became a place, away from teenage angst and loneliness. To get this "Place" this experience best it had to be Brian's way. 1970 it came out on cassette and became a portable companion and therapists for me. I felt I belonged to an exclusive club where "You either got it or you didn't. It was well into the late seventies that this work ripened and it was then as now considered the greatest pop album ever. It got me through my teenage years, young adulthood and as a middle aged and holding fan...pray it serves you as well as myself and millions of others.

There is an instrumental track from the Pet Sounds sessions, Trombone Dixie that you might like. Has vibraphone on it and the most beautiful chiming guitar. Recorded in twenty minutes according to Brian Wilson. There’s also a band called Big Star from the early 70”s who only made three albums, didn’t have any commercial success but were very influential. And if you want to cheer yourself up in five minutes with some classic uplifting 90’s Italian style piano House you could do a lot worse than The Arms of Loren (Steinway mix) by E-Voke. Randomness ends.

This is possibly one of the 10 greatest pop albums ever. Anyway, I just saw some of your analysis and want to say that you have an amazing and rare sensibility. I've never seen a person that understand a deep and difficult song as Interstellar Overdrive at first/second listening (neither me as a "nerd") as you did. You could enjoy music that is much more alien and that has a high emotional potential and artistic value. (Sorry for my english). I give you a few names that expanded my mind, also only for yourself (they are very impopular): The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (baroque folk). Faust I (krautrock/obscure collage/unknown), Rock Bottom (prog/unknown), Desertshore (gothic/folk), Music To Eat (psychedelic/idk), Fare Forward Voyagers (folk), Canaxis 5 (minimal/drone/world), Hosianna Mantra (folk/world/idk), Ascension by Glenn Branca (no-wave). Ciao!

as always an incredible job - "Caroline No" has brought me to tears several times and still has the potential to and its been over fifty years since I first heard it; one note: B. Wilson is Brian Wilson, who is pretty much responsible for everything on this album (with the exception of "Sloop John B" which was Al Jardine's suggestion) Brian was going through some tough times mentally with this album and the album can trigger that within me sometimes... you are still going through a grieving process, let yourself heal as you do, no need to rush anything, we are all going to be here whenever you decide to post something -- one last thing I love the NUMERO QUATRO tunes

“God Only Knows“ is tied with “The Long and Winding Road“ as my number one(s) as my “desert island” song. Both are beautiful almost stream of consciousness songs whose lyrics mate perfectly with the music. Whilst I love Sir Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson, I have never wanted to kiss them. Ha ha ha. You on the other hand…😇😉🎸👨🏼‍⚕️🎸🎼🎵🎶 Keep doing what God leads you to do. May He bless you with peace and safety and health. Cheers.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🎸👨🏼‍⚕️

I recommend you listen to the version of Caroline, No where the tape isn’t sped up. I find it more somber and heartbreaking. Also, with I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, Brian is twisting the expression because he was saying he’s too advanced for his age and he wishes he lived in the future.

It just occurred to me when you talking about how cinematic Brian Wilson's arrangements were that they kind of reminded me of Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western scores, which also juxtaposed instruments from traditionally separated musical spheres--not just rock vs classical, but also folk instruments and some somewhat obscure background classical instruments brought into the foreground--just because the composer really liked how they sounded. Preliminary googling tells me that A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS wasn't released in the US until years later, so I guess it was like minds coming up with things simultaneously, ie, just something in the 60s water...

This is such an amazing, ground-breaking record, but for me "God Only Knows" is just head and shoulders above any other Beach Boys song (always excepting Good Vibrations). There is so much there, as you described so well! For mid 1966 Pet Sounds is ahead of its time, but of course only by a couple of years, as the amazing innovation of the late 1960s will explode into a whole 'nother musical world. And Pet Sounds stands at the threshold of that new world.

Greetings Crystal. Sleigh bells and castanets were common in Brian Wilsons instrumentations. Already considered one of the greatest albums of all time, imagine if Capitol Records held out a mere 19 weeks for the inclusion of Brian's masterpiece Good Vibrations on Pet Sounds. It likely would have knocked Revolver off the top of the album charts and completely changed the Beach Boys historical trajectory. RNB

Greetings to you RNB! I am truly hoping you are well! And that so insane to think about! Pet Sounds has left a lasting impression on me, I had only heard Wouldn’t It Be Nice + God Only Knows before this experience alongside you. And since the first listening I felt it’s impact on me. Now Good Vibrations has been one of my all time favorite songs! I can’t imagine what a sensation this entire album would have been with its inclusion!
