We should unpack how the model minority trope was the norm for some characters, but not others. Look at Manny, for example. She just might be the first character of color on tv I remember seeing who had such a varied journey, going through a ton of stuff and coming out amazing and fulfilled. I feel like she went through pretty much every type of scandal and while it was never explicitly stated, the differences in how she was treated compared to others was…interesting, to say the least. On the other end, Alli and Sav both dealt with familial and cultural pressures, but I feel like the show runners took their time to build that journey for them and show different paths for them that ended in both being happy, successful, and also matured from it.

Totally agree on not really loving Sean and Emma. Like they dated in grade 7 and they're the "endgame" ship of the fandom? I do think that Sean was Emma's best boyfriend but I honestly think Ellie was better for him. I also think Jimmy and Ellie would have been a cute couple but they had to have her infatuated with Craig.

I would love to see a video on why Sean/Ellie has always been superior to Sean/Emma. But I'm just going to say this, I don't mind the good girl/bad boy trope and I understand that this is a show about high schoolers, but there just came a point where Emma seemed like she wanted to sabatoge Sean's future with that obviously fake pregnancy. But even before then, they were just two people who were attracted to each other because of their differences, but they were simultaneously incompatible for that reason. Whereas with Ellie and Sean, they brought out SO MUCH good in each other. Imo, Sean's character went downhill early season three, but he quickly made a recovery once he started dating Ellie. He straightened himself out, ironed out his wrongs against Mr. Simpson, and was stable enough living by himself. Meanwhile, Ellie finally had someone she could confide to about her cutting on a regular basis and someone who really deeply cared about her. They were good for each other because of all their similarities, and more importantly were HAPPY together. I loved Sean's line, "Let me make it simple: move in, with someone who loves you." That was the first time (onscreen) he had used the word love with Ellie and the way he was so sincere, but so gentle was AWWWW. My ten year-old self was gushing.

PLEASE make a whole video about Sean and Ellie! Emma and Sean were a very cute middle school couple, and I would have loved to see them grow up and just be great friends. When they got together, Ellie and Sean were perfect for each other. Then the writers just really threw them both under the bus as the seasons went on.

I personally like and cared for Riley. He wasn't the typical girly fem gay boy like most characters are, and for me that's a huge problem. If you're gay, you automatically have to be girly in TV and I dislike that. Marco was a huge character and I really liked him, but Riley was way more surrounded by straight guys who were not even close to be remotely sensitive towards others. And I disliked him having only Zane as a love interest, because Zane was indeed forcing him out, no matter how much I liked his personality and actor, he was forcing Riley out. Now a days, Riley's actor is not even acting anymore, and apparently he is the homophobic guy. Idk, but, to be honest, it's like the character's whole story arc was actually indeed true.

I never understood why people liked Zoe Rivas. She couldn't even act, and I mean that's literally her backstory, she was an actress and started to study at Degrassi and NONE OF HER CRYING SCENES WERE GOOD. She was evil, manipulative, boring to watch, boring as a whole and when people call her "iconic" I honestly barf. I would rather have Frankie, Lola, Maya, Emma, Holly J, Paige and so many other girls and them being problematic than to ever have to deal with Zoe Rivas making a scandal of everything that is not even remotely close to be related to her. She was, by far, the worst and never developed anything on the show.

I feel like Imogen and Jack weren’t a good relationship. Communication is a big part of relationships and every time Jack and imogen talked about something important it will turn into a big fight. I’m not saying that every time you have a disagreement with your s/o you need to break up, but with imogen and Jack it was different. I do think that imogen was still hurting a bit from her break up with Fiona because they clicked so well and she wanted that with Jack. But we learn that Jack is closed off and doesn’t really like talking about her problems. Like her not wanting to in a relationship with just Imogen. If imogen hadn’t said anything she would just been a poly relationship that she didn’t want in the first place.

finally! I’m so OVER the ZIG HATERS! As someone who was in foster care and ran away at 16/17 got an apt at 17.5 etc his whole character is relatable! Children who grew up with Mom and Dad or a stable single mom don’t get his story or growth! I appreciated his house hopping kicked out storyline! It’s so hard to graduate while goin thru all that! I may have been in foster care but I never went to that house I hopped around with ppl from school a lot like ZIG! I always thank the writers for his storyline as it’s WAY MORE REAL then the attempt with KC and the group home we saw for 3 seconds They could’ve really given KC a true group home storyline but they dropped the ball in so many ways. As someone who was in group homes he would’ve had no time to knock up Jenna and u can’t just go home when ur mom calls the group home was no realistic at all they could’ve had way more Degrassi kids in there as realistically the boys his age in that home would also go to Degrassi and he can’t just be comin and goin as he did. It was a TOTAL WASTE of the reality of those homes. He also would NOT have had a cell phone the list goes on. So when zig came it was a breath of fresh air Myself and many others ran away from foster and group homes and floated around all they HS. Zig being so naive lacking society common sense with stuff etc cuz he always focused on survival is ACCURATE ! When zig had a stable home like with Mya he wasn’t in survival mode and could mature and grow smarter. The fact he had no help with getting collage together I could go on all day ACCURATE that feeling where everyone else goin off and u feel embarassed cuz no one prepped u for SAT or application ACCURATE I never got the college exp cuz my high school experience was like Zigs. Honestly a lot of degrassi’ POC characters were way more interesting than the white ones. Also, the writers have a major problem with letting their POC characters exist without a white counterpart (i.e. Ali and Clare, Manny and Emma, Jimmy and Spinner, Marisol and Katie, Hazel and Paige, Danny and Derek, Liberty and JT, etc.) it’s like if they don’t have a white best friend they’ll just fade into the background (what they basically did to Liberty after JT died)

I know I didn’t just hear “I’m pretty sure everyone can agree that Spinner is the best character overall” because just no. Spinner literally humiliated Paige when she was working at the movie theaters which she was doing to pay for the damages to his car. He humiliated her in front of their friends and it got so bad that their friends told him to stop because they thought he was taking it too far. He never once sympathized with her when he found out that she got sexually assaulted. I know Paige wrecked his car and she went to a party hoping to flirt with the guy that she liked when she was still with Spinner but she was R@ped! A little compassion wouldn’t have hurt. And he was incredibly homophobic towards Marco. I get character development but there are definitely better characters with better storylines. He was just not it.

Though it's great that Degrassi got rid of Declan and Fiona's twincest storyline, it would have been really interesting to see. Anya was cool, she should have gotten more storylines. Paige should have been dropped by her friends, like of course Hazel(who definitely deserve better) and I guess, Marco

Paige had her moments of being terrible but she also had her moments of being a stand out. When Emma got her period, yes Paige was still kind of mean but she gave her a pad and a little support. She went on the date with JT and told him he was a good date and if circumstances were different (again not that nicely) she'd go out with him again. When Ashley tried to make over Terri, Paige is the one who told her to back off. She was the one to push Terri to not believe Rick after he abused her. She pushed Ellie to get help for her self harm. Everyone says Paige instigated the bullying against Rick, when really it was mostly Emma, and everyone followed suit. Paige stopped Spinner on two separate occasions from attacking him, first when he pulled Rick out of his mom's car and then behind the Dot after Jay hit him and asked who was next. You can see Spinner stepping forward but Paige holds him back. She also looks really uncomfortable with them physically assaulting him. She also gets up to tell him that what happened at the knowledge bowl was awful. He was not going to go through with his plan after that but then Spinner and Jay lied about Jimmy. She tried to help Ashley with her dad, but Ashley threw chocolate milk in her face. I mentioned on the first video how Paige worked to get Alex to work towards something throughout their relationship. When Alex first mentioned she and her mom were struggling financially Paige offers to lend her money but Alex turns her down. She brought Alex to her house to take care of her after Chad knocks her over the coffee table. She was there for Hazel after Jimmy got shot. She was there for Marco after he came out. She took responsibility for wrecking Dean's car. Even taking Spinner's crap while she was working to pay him back. Yes, there were a *LOT* of times she was unnecessarily mean but there were a lot of a times she got dumped on by people even when she was being nice. The main problem is that when they ran out of real stories for Paige they just assassinated her character. They did the same thing with Alex. They destroyed Paige and Alex (and all of Alex's progress) because Deanna was leaving. That's just bad writing.

Naw…Zane was the villain. Point blank. Riley was upfront that he was not ready to come out and Zane could not ACCEPT that. It was clear that was a deal breaker for Zane so stop dating him. Zane thought he could change Riley by being passive ALL OF THE TIME. It was so exhausting and I was happy Riley ended it the way he did, but even then, Zane tried to just push him to come out. Nahh, that’s a form of a manipulation at its finest

The thing about Paige is that she was bad and the show really didn't make any apologies for it or give her some redeeming storyline. You can't dismiss her evilness like every other character. In contrast everyone else was trying to be good or wanted to be seen as good. That is what people really like she was bad (borderline evil) and truly didn't care if you thought so.

I like Riley, but I think more with Zyan, who’s one of my favorite Degrassi characters. I also think it’s because I came in after he was coming out and got better. I’m not a big fan of self hating non-straight characters, which I think does ruin Riley a bit, but I feel like he was more unique than say Tristian, who was very snotty and very rude when he came in. Also, I think Holly J. needed to be called out in her first couple of seasons, because she was really mean; I don’t agree with how Ali bullied her in talking about harming Holly, especially bringing her hair color into it, but she barely got people to turn on Holly, which means she definitely needed a wake up call to be better.

I personally disagree with the Riley and Zane part. Riley ( imo ) played a closeted jock very well, his hated for himself came out on others but he did try to get help. Zane was constantly coming back to Riley KNOWING he wasn’t ready but getting mad when he wouldn’t come out. It wasn’t a fair relationship to either of them but Zane had no right to get mad when Riley just wasn’t ready. I do wish they could’ve gotten a true happy ending though. They brought out the good in each other.

if you do another degrassi opinions here's mine! i actually think Ashley is very well written. is she likeable? no! but i think she's a very good character, everything she does makes sense for her. also, i really liked how she struggled as a female musician being overshadowed by the men around her (craig stealing the songs she wrote for his album, jimmy becoming more popular than her on their song), i think it's really realistic to how women are treated in different industries irl. i really think it was crappy how she took Jimmy off her song, but it makes sense with what she'd been through.

I wanna like Anya..but she was severely underused until the end of her character arc. Loved how bold she became but then throwing her with that doctor…just ruined her again for me. The hottest Degrassi boy for me will always be a toss up between Sean and Eli. And the most beautiful was definitely Zane. Also I need to talk about how the writers messed up Paige. She was having really good development and then she just kept getting these storylines were she was just being hella judgmental for no reason. And I gotta defend Riley a bit…Zane definitely was pressuring Riley to come out before he was ready..and if Riley wasn’t ready..Zane really should’ve just left him alone. It would’ve helped if we saw how his parents reacted to him coming out…but Zane was literally written to have his character centered around Riley and I hate how the writers do this sometimes. I wanna love Zoe…but she’s done some crazy criminal stuff that makes her like..hard to be redeemable. Like she would take steps forward and go like a bajillion steps back.

I never really consider Declan and Fiona as twincest. I think a lot of people either misinterpret or misrepresent it, because it's uncomfortable and something we obviously aren't ever going to root for. But they weren't in a relationship and Fiona didn't kiss Declan because of any attraction to him. She had really only ever had him for support, no friends of her own, and she was struggling a LOT emotionally. In that moment she was territorial and desperate for attention because she was afraid of being replaced and left alone. So I see that scene as more symbolic of Fiona's state of mind and her hitting rock bottom rather than anything romantic or sexual

I'm only a minute into this video, but I will say that I think I read somewhere that they were planning on taking the twincest storyline a bit further in season 10 but Declan's actor got a cast in Terra Nova, which didn't end up doing well anyways lol. I'd have to dig for that source because it's been a while
