Yeah, so many notes. Your saying that reminded me of Steve Morse's "Tumeni Notes".

The opening song of a two hour concert. Sad to say, there are even more impressive pieces in this show. When the Water Breaks is off the leash and really showcases Rudess and Portnoy. Rhapsody in Blue is a masterpiece

You should check out a song called Tumeni Notes by Steve Morse. The song title comes from a scene in the movie Amadeus where the emperor (or whoever) complains that something Mozart wrote was nice but it just had "too many notes" and his advisor said something like "yes it's true, there are only so many notes one can hear". Your comment on the number of notes Petrucci was playing reminded me of that. There are a lot of notes in that Steve Morse song and they are played fast. Ironically fast?

FYI JP, you mentioned Billy Sheehan, well he was in Max Webster for two weeks in studio during recording of their last album, Universal Juveniles, but it didnt work out for them. Thought youd be pissed if i didnt tell you. 😎🇨🇦

Yes sir, fast and long. I felt they kept the tempo and were in sync for the song. I know Portnoy used a electronic pad on the right side of his kit to let the guys know we r getting ready to move to the next section of the song. Ya prog rog for sure, but the musician ship these guys have is hug, feeling the energy from each other and feeding off it is great. I was just curious to see how you looked at this type of music. Thanks for reacting to my request. I attempt to play this stuff but not with this much preciseness. But it is still fun to try. That's again Justin for reacting to my request.

You're right about the mix. Way too heavy on the guitar side of things. This whole concert is pretty cool. I only learned about this project a year or so ago (us old prog-heads tend to live in the 70's and 80's). Have you listened to anything by Levin's side project with Bill Bruford from around this same time as LTE, Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (B.L.U.E.)? There's some tasty stuff there. More of a jazz/avant-garde sound than this, which seems like a mix of speed metal and prog.

This is why I like Rush & Tool, they don't let the "LEAD" guitar be more important than the rest of the ensemble. Petrucci is impressive but ( hello Sensoy Overload ) after 1 song I'm full and need to digest what my ears have been bombarded with. Oh, I gotta go my main course of Pinch Harmonics has showed up, thanks JP.

I mean, the guitar solo on this song for example is extended by some 2 minutes for the live show. The mix is also better on the studio version. I do understand if you still find the guitar overbearing though, I have a similar issue with Tool where I feel the drums are so much more complex than the guitar that everything feels out of whack. All music just can't click for everyone.

I miss Portnoy in DT but he has been doing some great things like Winery Dogs (with Billy Sheehan). And he just finished a tour with Petrucci in support of his last solo album (which is amazing). Petrucci can rip like crazy but prefer his more melodic solos like end of Octavarium. But he is great to watch live. The LTE third album came out last year I believe. it is good but I don't listen to it often. Not as much as 1 and 2. I am curious....when you were at Berkley, were Portnoy and Petrucci legends at that point or viewed a different way? I see a lot Berkley performances online and lots do DT and LTE stuff. Wondering if they are popular there or because their music is so niche maybe they are not seen in a positive light as I would think.

uuumm hmmm ... I don't know lol. I was into DT before I went to Berklee. When I got to Berklee I got opened up to an intense amount of different types of music. It was like the floodgates opened and I was just a sponge. I kinda left my rock/prog/metal/grunge stuff to the side for a looonnnggg time and didn't really touch back on it for 10yrs nearly. Some longer than that. When I was there Mangini was still teaching at Berklee. When the switch was gonna be made it was glaringly obvious he would be the choice. I did catch them in Boston I think my freshman year and Mangini sat in actually. I don't think there was a negative around DT... it's a music school. Music students are gonna be into shit like DT or Vulfpeck/Flyers/Wong or anything thats just super technical music nerdy only music students like it type stuff. no offense to any of these bands specifically. I'd say Thank You Scientist is another like that.
