YES is the number one progressive rock group in my opinion and my favorite band. They have a lot of long songs and it takes a true music lover to "get it". Not everyone does. Their music is complex with many changes and in a lot of their songs the words sometimes don't have meaning but they sound good and it's up to the listener to put their own meaning into it like a Picasso painting. You could start with some of their shorter songs until you get used to them but the classics are the longer ones such as "Roundabout", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium", "Awaken", ""The Revealing Science of God"". Shorter ones include "I've Seen All Good People", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "Yours is No Disgrace", "The Rhythm of Love" and many more. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them and so will many others so keep those YES songs coming.

A very unusual song to introduce yourself to YES with. Absolute masterpiece, of course, but extremely unique in their own catalog, so you won't hear anything else like this from them or anyone else. I suppose the closest thing would be "To Be Over", but not really. Have fun. Best band ever.

Welcome to the Yes rabbit hole! This song is one of their shortest and most pastoral sounding compositions. They can rock too! I looooove symphonic rock, especially some of their long epic compositions that take you on roller coaster like journeys. I have been a fan of Yes since 1971 and still never tire of their music. I suggest you listen to Roundabout next, their breakout "hit" from 1971 then any and all tracks from The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, and this one - Going For the One. After that you might be ready for Relayer and Tales From Topographic Oceans. The lyrics are often cryptic - don't try to decipher them too soon. They are best absorbed emotionally or spiritually, not literally...The music was enough for me for the first 30 years!

every yes song between 1970 and 1978 is an unbelievable masterpiece, as long as you have an attention span longer than 3 mins..they certainly can Rock out but they do not follow any rules of music, they make them and are therefore versatile and unique , using harp, pipe organ , harpsichord and a mass of instruments not heard in rock normally...including a rack of junkyard car parts in gates of delirium ....also the very early and late stuff can be sketchy.. you will not believe what you are hearing, as it will not be what you are used to....and as with every other reactor, they will become your favourite band . Try roundabout next, its a more popular choice

During that period you mentioned Yes were playing what is known as progressive rock. They dabbled in it later at times as well but in the 70s is when they perfected it along with other bands who werre doing it then such as Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd etc.

The cast on this song is arguably what most Yes fans would call "the regular cast" after self-discovery. "Fantasy" is well taken: the song is about a sculptor and his wife. He is working on a female sculpture when his wife falls ill and dies. The soul of his wife fills the sculpture and with its completion it comes to life. (hope the translator made it reasonably understandable). "Yes" is a prog rock band. Stylistic variety is the order of the day. This song here is very juicy, harmonic and imaginative. If you listen to "Gates of Delirium" from the album Relayer, or even (just) "Roundabout" it's a completely different story.

Anyone who loves Steve's guitar playing and Jon's singing here (and who doesn't?) should give the final acoustic part of "The Ancient" a listen (from their 1973 album Tales from Topographic Oceans, of course). Those six minutes contain some of the best classical guitar playing I've ever heard, and together with the folk-like song placed at the centre of it ("Leaves of Green") makes an unforgettable unity. Then listen to the entire 18-minute track (or just listen to the whole first time around) and marvel at Steve's funky, free-form outbursts on rough electric guitar, Alan's incredible drumming and the amazing band backing them! One more of my many Yes favourites... ;)

People MUST follow the lyrics. It's mind-boggling: Realising a form out of stone Set hands moving Roan shaped his heart Through his working hands Worked to mold his passion into clay Like the sun In his room, his lady She would dance and sing so completely "So be still," he now cries "I have time, oh let clay transform thee so." In the deep cold of night Winter calls, he cries "Don't deny me!" For his lady, deep her illness Time has caught her And will for all reasons take her In the still light of dawn, she dies Helpless hands soul revealing Like leaves we touch, we learn We once knew the story As winter calls he will starve All but to see the stone be life [instrumental] Now Roan, no more tears Set to work his strength So transformed him Realizing a form out of stone His work so absorbed him Could she hear him? Could she see him? All aglow was his room Dazed in this light He would touch her He would hold her Laughing as they danced Highest colors touching others Did her eyes at the turn of the century Tell me plainly How we'll meet, how we'll love Oh, let life so transform me Like leaves we touch, we dance We once knew the story As autumn called And we both remembered all those many years ago I'm sure we know [long instrumental] Was the sign in the day with a touch As I kiss your fingers We walk hands in the sun Memories when we're young love lingers so Was it sun through the haze That made all your looks As warm as moonlight? As a pearl deep your eyes Tears have flown away All the same light Did her eyes at the turn of the century Tell me plainly When we meet, how we'll look As we smile time will leave me clearly Like leaves we touch, we see We will know the story As autumn calls we'll both remember All those many years ago

The founding members of Yes, bassist Chris Squire and lead singer Jon Anderson, were both perfectionists who would not tolerate anything less than the best when it came to other members of the band. They were not really happy with original guitarist Peter Banks, and kicked him out of the band when Steve Howe became available. Howe went on to be voted "Best Overall Guitarist" by the readers of Guitar Player magazine five years in a row, at which time a trophy was retired in his name and voters could no longer vote for Howe. The orginal keyboardist, Tony Kaye, got fired when he balked at adding all of the new-fangled (for 1970) electronic keyboards to his repertoire. In his place arrived the magnificent Rick Wakeman, who surrounded himself with racks holding at least a dozen different keyboards. The various different sounds greatly added to the magic that was Yes music back then. Wakeman was an extremely talented classically trained keyboardist. The original drummer, Bill Bruford, came from a jazz background and thought he had joined a band that was playing experimental jazz. He is a highly-acclaimed drummer, and he left the band of his own accord after the "Close to the Edge" album, publicly stating that the band had just realeased the greatest work of musical art it would ever achieve, and there was little point in remaining with the band to put out less noteworthy music. The lineup that included Howe, Wakeman, and Bruford was probably the greatest assemblage of skilled musicians to ever play together in a rock band. Bruford was replaced by Alan White, a drummer with a rock background whose style was a bit more straight-forward and less intricate than the jazz-trained Bruford. Jon Anderson stated that White's style better fit the band out on tour in arenas and stadiums where Bruford's more complex drumming could get lost in such settings. There is one fine song on "The Yes Album" named "Perpetual Change", which triggered a discussion among fervent fans about whether there should be a "Perpetual Yes" with new musical geniusus brought in to replace the aging original masters. Some people liked the idea. Other felt the new personnel should perform under a new name. In the early 1980's, the band did actually break up completely, breaking the hearts of its fans. But Atlantic Records had made too much money off the Yes brand to let it just drift into oblivion, and put a handsome young singer/composer/lead guitarist by the name of Trevor Rabin into a band containing former members of Yes. The band was going to be called Cinema, but Atlantic wanted it to be named "Yes" to take advantage of the established brand, and so it was, and Yes carried on. The band has endured mostly because the music from the early '70's was so unique and spectacular that it could be, and still is, toured by mostly new band members. Only Steve Howe remains part of the current iteration of Yes. He alone is worth the price of a concert ticket, and the band will play a lot of the classic 1970's tunes. Go see them if they tour near you. Yes rarely got AM radio play, maybe just during the Rabin era. Rabin had a knack for composing catchy pop hits, and that era became the most popular one for Yes due to the AM radio play. The stuff from the '70's was mainly 10 to 20 minute songs that did not fit the AM radio mold to allow for all those commercials. IMHO, the muse left the shoulder of the band's composers after the release of the album "Going for the One" in 1977. The quality of the songs declined, and they have never again attained the same level of genius that was on display back in the 1970's. If you weren't around back then listening to music, it is not strange that you had never heard of Yes before getting this particular request for a reaction.

The line-up in 1977 was the favourite of many fans. I was happy as teenager to visit their concert in Ahoy, Rotterdam, in November 1977. This song made a huge impression on me, hope it will be played at my funeral (and I hope that is many years away). Surely you will recognize Owner Of A Lonely Heart when you hear it. Rick Wakeman had played the piano on Cat Stevens's Morning Has Broken and the David Bowie on Space Oddity and Hunky Dory before joining Yes. And also in the Strawbs.

Most often with Yes, the lyrics are not linear. Sometimes they are not even relevant, except as collections of syllables that present the proper context for Jon Anderson's voice as an instrument. More often, in listening, the lyrics will be like looking through a kaleidoscope, and relistens will be turning that kaleidoscope. But you will hear snippets that make sense in the music. For instance in Awaken, you know from the music that you have been on a spiritual journey with numerous deviations, and then at the end Jon sings twice "Like the time I ran away, I turned around and you were standing close to me." Jon has confirmed that this is saying how we live our lives and often pull away from God, but whenever we do, if we just turn back to Him, we always find him ready to welcome and help us. On the kaleidoscope metaphor, Roundabout is about going for a day trip with your loved one, specifically through Scotland, and the joy of all the things encountered on the way, so you get lots of scattered images, but it works!

The first half is a Semi-Tragic love story, about an Artist named Rowan and his wife. He is exasperated, trying to create a Sculpture of her, but she won't stay still. Sadly she becomes ill and dies and Rowan is heartbroken, so he channels all his love and heatbreak into the statue of her, to the exclusion of all else. He finally completes his obsession project and the soul of his wife brings it to life and they are reunited (or another interpretation is that he dies from exhaustion and they reunite in the afterlife). The second half is about the love, joy and passion of two people in love, but also about how this is transistory, either as people move on or they pass on ("like leaves we touch, we dance, we once knew the story"). Fun fact: Guitarist Steve Howe is the only guitarist, besides Brian May, to play on a Queen track (The Spanish guitar part of "Innuendo").

Thanks for reacting to my favorite band! This was the first Yes album i purchased and my first rock concert tour at age 16 (1977). This was (to me) Yes's classic lineup. Steve Howe's magical guitar in this piece, and angelic vocals of Anderson/Squire. Often Yes lyrics are abstract and more poetic than literal. This song ironically "tells a story" and lyrics in the video would had helped you. Roundabout or Starship Trooper are great "next" reactions and highlight their ensemble musical talents in outstanding Prog Rock form.

Your balance must be set up wrong as the instrumentals don’t overpower the vocals. The song is about Pygmalion and Galatea. ‘ The story of Pygmalion and Galatea is one of the most popular classical myths ever told. In the myth, Pygmalion, a Cypriot sculptor, falls in love with his statue, Galatea. In the end, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, fulfills his wish and makes the statue real.’ Read up so you understand, then Listen again and get lost in their magic. I discovered Yes at age 13! I’m now 60 and still listen & blooming love them. Absolute Masters. Going to see Rick Wakeman in my hometown this November. CAN NOT WAIT!

YES are the quintessential progressive rock band. Their most revered and respected works are on The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs (live), Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, and Going for the One. Arguably, the best versions of the band performed those albums. Core members were Anderson, Squire, Howe, and Wakeman, with Bruford and White on drums. Banks and Kaye left early. Don't stress too much about Jon's lyrics. He's either another musical instrument, or a poetic genius, according to your personal attention span. You won't get a true sense of YES without listening to the albums listed above. Their influences are deep, wide, and important. They can rock hard, or sound like a church choir or a symphony. Heck, they have PLAYED with symphony accompaniment. Some of their work is incomprehensible by some people. I would say, give it ALL time - and several listens. It definitely grows on you. I've been listening since 1970, in my teens. They kept me sane all through college and beyond!

Interesting choice for your first venture into Yes. This song is amazing, and some of Steve Howe's finest work, and one of his personal favorites but it's not what I would have chosen to recommend as an introduction. Most people start with something like *_Roundabout,_* (which is where most Yes fans in the '70s started with the band anyway, since it was a major hit). Either way, happy you're reacting to them, enjoyed the reaction and subbed. Not to say this is a _departure_ for the band per se, (there are plenty of folky numbers and moments, and they've covered a TON of sonic ground), but you'll hear a completely different group with earlier songs like _Roundabout,_ _Yours Is No Disgrace,_ _Starship Trooper,_ etc. Looking forward to watching more!

@@WhyAmIReacting I get you. Oh, and also, I was gonna say, in general, it's probably better, time-management wise not to try and parse Yes' lyrics on a first listen, lol. Their singer at the time, Jon Anderson, had a very oblique approach to words, using them more as "sound/rhythm paintings," or "idea sketches" if you will. You actually happened upon one of the most straightforward sets of lyrics he ever wrote with the classic band. It's basically a Pygmalion story in reverse, deeply touching, and in my top two of Yes numbers. It also happens to be in guitarist Steve Howe's top two favorites, which I've actually discussed with him. More of a deep cut, which is great it's your introduction. PROGRESSIVE ROCK was a genre all it's own. Most of 100s of bands rarely got commercial radio play bc of the long format, Classical, Folk, Psychedelic, and Jazz influences. DONT EXPECT STRAIGHT ROCK from YES even though they are a POWERFUL and Intense as any Hradrock EVER. Then they'll blow your mind with music completely unique. This was about a sculptor whose wife died, and to reconnect with her love, he makes her out of clay. Jon Andersons lyrics here are VERY CLEAR but he writes in metaphors and sometimes in a more abstract viceral style rather than straight forward mundane Rock ways. BTW compared to many of their others 70s songs this is much more easier to comprehend. FYI You should NOW DIVE into THE DEEPER END and listen to the song ^ album CLOSE TO THE EDGE. Youll get more ROCK than you can WVER IMAGINE. In fact it the GREATEST PROGROCK ALBUM of all time!

Welcome to Yes. The lineup from this song (Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman and White) is the best, most fans would say. Squire and White are deceased, sadly. Musicianship at a very high level is a staple of Yes in all of its lineups. Lyrics can be a bit opaque as Anderson makes heavy use of metaphor and imagery. He has admitted he sometimes chooses lyrics for how they sound as much as what they say. This song is a bit anomalous in that it is a ballad. Many of their best songs (Roundabout the best example) are rock with a symphonic or classical flavor.

Definitely fantasy like with many YES songs one could close one’s eyes and dream! This is one of the bands more mellow tunes though they were one of the first PROGRESSIVE Rock bands which have many transitions. Try reacting to Siberian Khatru, Close To The Edge, and And You And I. They have done so many legendary tunes. More complex than almost any other band you will ever listen to!

Some of Steve Howe's choicest guitar playing/writing ever, and angelic vocals by Jon. Hauntingly beautiful song - there's also a lovely version that Steve cut with Annie Haslam from Renaissance. The feeling of joy and redemption towards the end of this song ("young love lingers...") is essential Yes, I recognize this uplifting, dramatic fire from many of their songs. :) (YES, I've been a big fan of the band since I was twelve years old!). ❤

What do you get when you combine a jazz drummer, a classical pianist, a vocalist thatvsounds like a literal angel, and a guitarist who can play literally any style but likes classical/flamenco... you get a group that is impossible to define a style/genre for. What kind of band are they? Yes.

'Turn of the Century' is a gorgeous and sad song for sure, but if you want more rockin' stuff, try 'Close to the Edge' and 'Siberian Khatru' -- but don't skip 'And You And I' in between them!

The original line up is not what fans consider the classic group. That would be Anderson, Wakeman, Howe, Squire, and Bruford. So the album is pretty much the classic Yes, but with the return of their original drummer (White) because Bruford left to join King Crimson. Turn of the Century is a very mellow Yes song. A better example of their style might be 'And You and I' from Close to the Edge, or the 18 minute 45 second title track of that album.

I just stumbled on to your channel.. Interesting. I have been a fan since of Yes since I was 14, (1977). Yes is the 1st definition of Prog rock. They are great musicians and have such a wide varied catalog of music. For a first song it was an interesting choice for you. Other might be Starship trooper, Close to the edge, Perpetual Change Long distance Runaround, Yours is no disgrace, Ive seen all good people, 90215, owner of a lonely heart, ....

This is not typical Yes. But as others have said - this is regarded as the classic Yes lineup. Ironically this song is credited to the drummer (there are no drums on this) Alan White one of his few solo contributions. Close to the Edge album is regarded widely as the best progressive rock album by mort aficionados. For the best understanding of the band start with The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Going for the One - which has the Turn of the C track on it. Then dive into Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer. They had the best musicians around at that time and created their own genre which others have copied. For a single play Roundabout. This song displays in a nutshell their appeal. 😊

There ARE drums on this and other tuned percussion. Also Alan wrote it on piano. Early demos of the song are VERY VERY different.

A nice introduction to the music of Yes (even if it's just a small excerpt from the variety of their music). You just read out the current cast of Yes. Since the band is new to you and you have no ideas or expectations, I have a request for you. Could you listen to the title track "Mirror to the Sky" from their current album (2023) "Mirror to the Sky"? The album didn't go down too well, but I love this song (otherwise I wouldn't want it).

Their lyrics can be VERY meaningful, but most of that meaning comes from the listener (not a bad thing though!) Jon Anderson has said he often chooses lyrics based on how the words sound and flow in context with the music rather than what the words are saying.

Nice reaction to my favorite band. YES is firmly in the category of "progressive rock." Turn of the Century is such an atypical introduction to YES. Most people first stumble upon one of their more listened to songs... like "Roundabout". I'm certain you'll get plenty of suggestions for other beautiful and amazing YES songs to react to. I hope you do check out YES more fully... perhaps try something a bit earlier from the third album, "YES Album," next. YES lyrics are often more poetry than prose. Turn of the Century's lyrics are actually some of the most prosaic. Personally, I find meaning in all of their songs. Welcome to YES!

A tremendous song and nobody could ever sound as good or be replaced as lead vocalist. Steve Howe has been with the band since their second or third album back in the very early 1970’s. Unfortunately Steve and Jon Anderson do not get along and so between sSteve and Chris Squire Jon Anderson was kicked out and later came back and went on his way again.

Do yourself a favor and listen to a better recording of this so that you can listen to the lyrics. Tells the story of Roan the sculptor and how he recreates his lady following her death. It is an unusual song as an introduction to Yes, but I'm always happy to see someone reacting to my favorite band for the past 40 years. As far as "rock," goes, do a deep dive into their material. Plenty of "rock," songs to listen to. Try this live version of "Turn of the Century" ;to hear the lyrics. better. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n82ojd1eq92VZac.html

Going for the one album should only be heard in total...From the opening Going for the the one...To the last notes of Awaken...The album is a journey...Turn of the century is perfectly placed in the album to emotionally prepare you for the rest...Turn of the Century is for someone that LOVES Yes...The layers are far too complex to grasp in a first or single listen...Annie Haslam ( Renaissance) sings, while Steve Howe plays guitar for this masterpiece...It's enough to make one swoon.
