As someone else pointed out. Ali even cries out "Hyong" or something like that. Which supposedly means "respected older brother" or something. That just adds to the level of how horrible that betrayal is.

Ali's biggest flaw was that he had too big a heart for such a coldblooded environment. He trusted a friend, someone who he saw as a brother. And that's precisely what cost him. Far too trusting for his own good.

Was never thinking to write something like this but I have to get this off my chest. ALI is not stupid, he had a big heart through out the entire season, and what's so grand about this show is how intensely realistic it can get. Some of these reactors are far too cold to be insulting him, to then be surrounded with friends, they could be joking to lighten the mood flex its a natural defence to feeling hurt, but to say he was was idiot! I agree, the translation doesn't help. Probably would've driven the meaning a little closer to home if they knew he was basically calling Sang-Woo his "Big brother/Protector". It's one thing to betray someone who helped you out, but to betray someone you respect and admire is a lot harder to do, something Ali shows he's not capable of, even to the point he doesn't even suspect Sang-Woo's betrayal until the last moment.

I literally cannot watch Ji-yeong die ever again. To me, that's the saddest part of this show. Also, to me it felt wrong that some people were pissed at what Ali did. I get it, it's a game and you have to play it to win, but I'm probably one of maybe very few who actually respect what Ali did. He had a good fuckin heart and he was a caring person. His only downfall was that he was TOO caring, and that's the problem with the world. It shits on the good-hearted, and leaves them with nothing.

I came here to comment that too - I was surprised at how many reactions were that Ali was stupid (and all who said that were male) - yes, I know it's a game of life or death, but they were all teaming up and helping each other out. He had won fair and square and the person he trusted and respected through a fit and took advantage of his kind heart and naïveté and betrayed him. I was NOT surprised to see more women upset by Ali's betrayal. It seems like many of the men were more upset with the second two deaths ... both of them were willing to sacrifice for the other person. Sang-woo was out for himself and this is where we find out. He knew Ali had a family at home and was doing this for him. Plus the reason he was in debt was also the most pure out of all - he was working without pay! The ONLY person with good morals in the entire damn show.

I really dislike when people call Ali stupid. It's beautifully conveyed in the acting that he hesitates to hand over the marbles; He understands that this choice puts him in danger but makes a gambit and deliberately chooses to trust Sang-Woo. He's just misguided by his emotions and hope there might be a way to beat the system and survive together with his friend.

Ali wasn't stupid, he was rather naive, or too innocent to be in such a horrible society where one could only survive by taking advantage of others weaknesses. As an Asian, I can say that In Asia, Ali's personality is what's described to be 'Blank piece of paper', not a single mark or scratch on it, or any flaw to it, to represent the Innocence through a simple piece of paper that has not been drawn and painted upon by others influence. I love Ali so much, and his character, his whole story had the most impact on me, because it truly showed how much immigrants get taken advantage of, no matter how much of a great person you are, you will always be the one who has the lesser advantage, so those who have bigger chances than you will use your weakness to their advantage. Let me add, those who are closest to you hurts you the most, as we can see through sungwoo, you can only be betrayed by someone you truly trusted. I think they did such a great job to represent all the real life issues in our society.

Ali Death is the perfect visual translation of: Good guys finish last. The girl made a selfless heroic move and the old guy made his descision knowing he's terminally ill, so as sad as their deaths were, it was the path they willfully chose. They went on their own terms. Sang Woo's Betrayal of Ali on the other hand is just irredeemably cruel especially since Ali is such a naive, pure Character. I guess the saddest was Ali's death cause in a country where he's alone with his family trying to earn for living but gets played by his boss for 6 months then he met sang-woo who give his phone and bus fair to him and in the 4th game he choose him as his partner means he trusted him and belived despite the fact that he was just using him to move forward

jiyeongs death hit me the hardest here. its so real and heartbreaking how she can come to terms with her decision. when she says her final goodbye, u can see her natural human instincts show when she cries as she doesnt want to die. but her moral human side understands that the other girl is better off living and makes the brave choice. im semi traumatized lol

I dunno, for some reason he didn't tug at my heartstrings at all even before we knew who he really was. This will sound horrible but perhaps that was because of his age; he had nothing to lose and didn't seem upset at all about deaths around him. He really did seem to be enjoying the whole affair. And although the others all had nothing to lose in terms of capital... they were all too young to die with so much potential ahead of them.

Hahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahah. Ok 1st off, sang woo CLEARLY taught the game, which is why when Ali won the marbles,he got pissed. Him being an immigrant had nothing to do with falling for one of the most obvious bullshit cooked up in tv history, even a 12 year kid for central Africa wouldn't fall for that trick from sang woo. Ali was a 33 year old scammed out of life in a game where ONLY 1 person would come out alive, and he had his wife and kid to think about, but I guess trust for some guy he met some days ago triumphed over his reason for being there to begin with...you know, his fucking wife and kid

The marble game was by far the dirtiest game for them...imagine deciding to team up with your spouse, a very obvious choice, and be forced to have them shot. The old man was like seeing Old Yeller taken out to pasture...you knew it was going to happen. When Ali handed his marble sack over all I was thinking as it happened was 'no, no, no dude, what are you doing?'...such a dirty game.

Oh Il-Nam's true identity aside, the thought of taking advantage of an old man who has brain tumor and a developing dementia for their own safety is what really burst me to tears. What is up with the assholes calling Ali stupid? He’s not stupid. He trusted Sang-woo and was betrayed. Being betrayed by someone you trust doesn’t make you stupid. It makes the person who betrayed your trust a terrible person. The games don’t matter, they shouldn’t be killed for losing to begin with, none of them deserve this this.

You know what's weird? Oh Il-nam's "death" still kinda gets to me despite what I know. And I was so upset with the character by the end too and not at all sad about his death. I think maybe it's what he meant to Gi-Hun up to episode 6 that makes it feel that way. That and it's like I view his character as 2 different characters and it's hard not to separate them. idk

There is no moments of death taken with focus here, but out of focus or only sounds. Instead, we can see the faces of survivors and can focus on their feelings and emotions without being disturbed by brutal visuals. Compare it to other episodes' death scenes. They seem to have numerous techniques to shoot the same facts differently depending on situation and specific intention. Death means so many things in this drama. Every single scene is well-made and so detailed. They know what they're doing. And their acting. Wow.
