A new employee made a $50k mistake, which was completely reversible, we made her feel better sharing various mistakes we had made including my $1.5M mistake which took almost a week to fix. Lesson? Almost everything is fixable

She liked it so much, she put it on a mug ;) Back in high school business studies, someone wrote shirts without the R. Multiple times. In handwriting. On a major exam. Nowhere near as bad, just the teacher (and classmates) had a good laugh along with the girl who did it.

A manager in my group didn’t add a term date for a highly compensated salaried employee and they received pay biweekly for 6 months after they left. The employee called after it happened the first time and second and the manager still didn’t update the term date. They owed the company over 94K by the time it was fixed.

I feel like some of these mistakes need to include the impact it had on the company. For example, destroying a $20,000 equipment for a small company can be detrimental. However, large companies are shipping out hundreds of thousands dollars worth of equipment and $20,000 is just a write off. We once lost 2 items, valued at $180,000 a piece because someone sent it to a construction site instead of the staging office. After the mistake was discovered 2 months later, it was too late because the construction site hauls out all bulky debris on a weekly basis. I’m sure the company just writes off the loss. I also know that $180,000 is what we sell it for. It costs us only $1,000 to produce.

- I was on a photo/video shoot. Had been a very long 2 day shoot where I was starting to loose it. I cracked up laughing so hard over silly situation that developed. Client standing behind me when I farted so loudly. - in previous financial career in the 90’s, accidentally transferred $10 million to the wrong account. It was missing for many days & lost interest on the money for my employer.

I am a support contractor for the government. Some time during the covid thing, I joined a Teams meeting where you are muted automatically when you join... out of habit I clicked the mic button again, leaving my mic open. I have my own office space and no one was home, so initially all anyone heard was me farting, burping, scratching my nose, whatever. My wife comes home and into my office, guns blazing, using ever cussword in the book... I mean blasting something... not only did a lot of people tell me "hot mic", they called me to make sure I was okay. Now, every time my wife walks in the room I check my mic status. Talk about embarrassing! I am pretty good about calling out my own mistakes, but that one took the cake! In another instace, we have a marketing company that helps us with a website and an event booth, and we know they overtly rip the goverment off for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. During the review of the concepts of our booth, I was typing in the chat function to a teammate and I accidentally typed "about time we get our money's worth" in the chat channel for the whole meeting. In the end I said what all the govt was thinking, but wow did I have to explain it away.

In your second instance, I've done this when I thought I was replying to a colleague privately, no instead it ended up in the National Meeting "chat" with the CEO viewing it in "question time". Yeah...that was fun.

4:56 i just got hired to a new job. my boss thinks i'm doing great. and i am trying to spread the idea of "work to live, not live to work" and stop people from working 50-60 hour weeks. my coworkers... we are paid for 40 hours a week, that is what we all put in our time cards (though we're salary... weird), unless the company is going to start offering some incentive to work more hours... like more money... i am going to work as CLOSE to my 40 as i can manage. (sometimes things happen, and you need to stay a little later, but then... you can just go home early the next time you can!)

This wasn't my mistake, but it's worth repeating. At a large computer firm, an email from a (married) sales guy in the US intended for his girlfriend in the UK (who also worked for this company) instead went to the entire company. The email in question started out rather goopy with lots of amorous talk. After the phrase "Smile for the dickey bird" it went into a very elaborately described BDSM fantasy. The last I'd heard, he'd lost his job, left his wife, and was flying to his girlfriend in the UK. I think the girlfriend was also fired, but I'm not sure. I also don't know how things went between the couple after that.

I disagree with trying to negotiate with your current employer when you have a new job offer. The way I see it is if your current company sees the value in you and didnt give you the raise already (or at least have you on a road map to do so) then they dont care that much about you. If you are mentally already on the way out because you were looking for a new place then you will always be wondering "what if I took the other job" or looking for other jobs. Also when you do that to a company they know you are willing to blackmail them for the money. So they will put things in place to make sure they are ok should you leave (aka they make you dispensable). All of the way around its not a good thing to do. If you are looking and you get an offer then move on. If you are happy then stay and dont look for greener grass.
