Dr Tanya Bryon gets all the children crying with her ‘tough learning’ stance, helps Michelle Wright learn to ignore her sons’ tantrums, and gets personal with Alyson Hadley. Mum of 3 year old Lucie, Alyson breaks down in tears and reveals the fact that her own mother abandoned her when she was 7. Dad Richard has got to look after Lucie for the day, but mum keeps intervening and upsetting her. Jacob Murphy eats a plate of chips for the first time all by himself, and Isaac Murphy experiments with touching food.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman guides the audience through a week-long journey at TV’s first ever child and parent behaviour refuge.
During their stay at the House of Tiny Tearaways, three families live together, while child psychologist Dr Tanya Byron works with both parents and children to solve issues around fussy eating, sleeping habits, and public tantrums - and she'll challenge the parents to get to the root of the problems they're experiencing raising their children.
With Dr Tanya Byron's help and advice, the hope is that the families will learn useful pedagogy techniques and gain new insights, giving them long-lasting support though the parenting challenges they're facing.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

To all the people who are saying the treat box is unfair, it’s completely fair: good work gets rewarded, poor work doesn’t. There’s no punishment, only incentive for improvement especially from social learning.

This made me so angry when the mother was staying near the window and door so the daughter could see her! She caused the tantrum. Why was she not told to leave the area the minute Dad started to play with the daughter, long before the tantrum started?

My guess is, borderline personality disorder. She desperately needs the relationship, so she sabotages her daughter’s relationship with her father. She feels betrayed when daughter and daddy get close, because she thinks that means her daughter won’t be as close to her. It’s not a quick easy fix.

Allisons story of her childhood is a sad one, of course. How fortunate that she has a loving family as an adult, despite her efforts to sabatoge her daughter and husbands relationship. Very selfish. And, her pitty parties grew tiresome, especially compared to poor, sweet, sleep deprived, single parent Michelle. If anyone in that house had grounds to crumble in tears at every turn, its that girl. There's one adorable little mommy who demonstrated unimaginable strength.

Absolutely agree. Alison never intended for Lucy to bond with her father. And I read that shortly after this was filmed they divorced. Sad for the girl and fathers relationship, but he really did deserve a better marriage and family arrangement. I hope he and Lucy were eventually able to bond but it can't be the same as it could have been.

Kate Harvey - Michelle gets no sympathy from me either because she got pregnant BACK TO BACK and kept both kids with no settled partner in her life. I don't Romanize bad choices. Glad she's trying to do better and working on being a better mom, but having a father around for two sons (who even knows if they have the same dad) is a good start!

Yep, Allison used her childhood as a weapon against her husband ^and^ her children. I have to say, watching her sabotage him at every turn, really made me angry!! How bloody selfish of her! The very least she could do was attempt to make her daughter's childhood BETTER than her own. And to hear that she purposefully shoved *two *more *kids into this disaster is just awful. I hope the kids managed to turn out all right.

I can't figure out what is wrong with these parents! Their children are like mini-dictators who run the household. Put the child in bed and if they get up 100 times you keep putting them back. No sitting, no snuggling, no lying down with them. In a few days they will learn that bedtime means sleeptime. Also if the boy won't eat unless his food is pureed quit offering that. He gets a plate to eat, if he doesn't eat he goes to bed hungry. Won't take them more than a day and he will start eating! What are these parents so afraid of????? Unbelievable.

I think it's very easy to judge other parents. It's a pointless exercise. We all have our crosses to bear, and we all have our different ways of parenting, good and bad and everything in between. I think a bit of empathy and understanding goes a long way. If u are a parent, I bet I could point the finger at ur myriad of parenting mistakes. We all raise our kids by leaning on the understanding of what we experienced as children.
@dbentleyto95

Consistency works, no one says it is easy but practicing enough with these techniques the child will sleep. Most want to throw in the towel too soon and say it doesn't work.
@samanthaschwartz2316
@samanthaschwartz2316 2 жыл бұрын
So... Those tactics may work with some kids. But not all of them. In fact, not many of them. And even if it were to, "what's wrong with these parents" is that parents are ALL guilty of taking the easy way out sometimes. And eventually, some of those once easy ways create an absolute monster. And then you're undoing years of allowing bad habits and patterns to be formed, and re-learning how to reinforce properly. It's always easy to say from the outside what someone else "should" do, not easy to actually do it from the inside.

It is a huge mistake to teach kids they are the center of the universe. It is a mistake to make a huge deal over something that kids should be doing anyway, ie a five year old picking up a fork. Also, kids will not starve themselves. Tell them they will ear what you give them or nothing at all. By day 3 or 4 they will eat and no damage will have been done. It is against human nature to starve one self. Quit coddling them and raising the next generation of entitled narcissists. "Eat or dont eat. I don't care. If you don't eat it, you get nothing else."

Get that not all parents are equipped to deal with children with strong personalities, BUT - many of these dynamics are evident from the get-go re parents fighting / inconsistent messages, that the small child receives and is expected to navigate. As the psychologist explains (time and again, to different sets of parents); the problem is the parents, not the child. That said; a 'normal' 2-3 yr old will try the patience of any adult regardless of how well they're grounded or the health of the marriage. Terrible Two's is actually through terrible four yrs old, but in healthy family units it's survivable without total breakdown of family unit.

Omg Alison Hadley is crippling her daughter, & it is incredibly frustrating to watch! She had to know she did NOT need to stand there in her daughter's line of sight NOR, even worse, pick her up & whisk her away while she was beginning to calm down w/ dad. Alison acknowledges she's the problem but what....she can't put her daughter's needs above her own? She's well aware she's damaged the father/daughter relationship, alienated him in fact...does she care? It's all me me me w/ her. Shame on her. Many of us have had trauma in our upbringing....so you deal with it for the sake of your child! You resolve not to do the same to YOUR children...you do NOT visit your hang-ups on them! If I sound rough on her it's b/c I believe she's well aware of her detrimental actions & I feel she's been, thus far, quite selfish. JMHO

Every time I watch this episode I could choke Allison! She wanted Lucy to see her even though she wasn’t supposed to let her and let Richard have her the whole day! It’s her own selfishness that needed to be fed! Shame on her! She has no respect for Richard, none! She’s disgusting!

I feel anyone who becomes pregnant should be offered parenting classes and post birth education. Too many parents that don't know how to parent and too many moms and dads being sent home with a new baby with mental health concerns. Need to follow up with new families more often and offer more support. I wish there was someone who followed up with each family until they enter school age.

Something that worked a lot when my children didn't want to eat, or eat a certain thing, was to leave them at lunch time distracted with no food (on purpose of course) and I would start having it for meal myself, kind of letting them see me eating with a face of yummy which I emphasized. It would mostly work, unless it was something they had noticed they had refused. This works mostly with youngers. I think in general that the way we as parents were raised and our own maturity are the most important facts in being successful as parents. Of course our proper personalities. Grouchy parents will probably raise unhappy children or more traumatized. We can see here a mum sharing frustration with her own childhood. I've had also had success communicating with my already grown up children. I have told them about the things I did wrong with them and have asked for their forgiveness, and also have thanked them for being my companions in this learning curve as human beings.

I am not even a parent yet and I know that if mom steps away from the window and is out of line of sight and if the dad would just focus the attention away from the window and far away from the house their daughter's tantrum would just disappear like that(snaps her fingers)

I suspect the whole point of her staying in line of sight was to sabotage the daddy-daughter relationship. She is manipulative and awful. Even the "it's me that's the problem, boo-hoo" with the psychologist just felt like a manipulation: "see, I blamed myself, so now you can't blame me or put any demands on me."

@@lolalopez7657 I agree. A dose of cool down time in a quiet room is what Lucy probably should have got, no audience, no attention, so she could scream and roar to her heart's content... all, for nothing, until she clocked it wouldn't get her anywhere at all and she stopped or tired herself out.

Out of curiosity, have any parents out in youtubeland ever felt that moment when you didn't like your child because of their obnoxious behaviour? I remember clearly, with my firstborn, saying to my husband, I love Jess, but at this moment I do not like him. (He was 14 mind you). But I hope parents don't feel too guilty when they sit back and think, yep... don't think I like him. And then an hour later, it's all good again.

I’m surprised to see some of these parents smoking around their children, and I’m surprised Tanya allows it in the house, knowing how bad secondhand smoke is for growing children. If their children’s health isn’t enough incentive for them to quit, what will be? It’s so selfish.
