I have been obsessed with civil war history since I was 9. When I was 13 the only thing I asked for for Christmas was for my family to donate money to the Hunley conservation project. This has been such a fascinating part of history to me that I desperately wanted to be part of keeping it around, but I had no money myself.

Not a bad tour narration. I was part of the burial details and drilled/trained the honor guard from Mobile that escorted Lt Dixon's casket to the gravesite. The coin was carried in Dixon's pocket at Shiloh and took the punch of the bullet, but didn't get lodged into his leg. After Shiloh he had it engraved, My life preserver...GED. He was still carrying it in his pocket when they sank the USS Housatonic and then floundered themselves. They signalled the shore station of their success, by lantern, but then never returned to the launch station.

I'm a civil war reenactor and got to participate in the 5 mile long funeral march in Charleston from Battery Park to Magnolia cemetery for Cpt Dixon and his crew. It was a great honor. Thank you for doing this video and P.S Cpt Dixon's coin was never lodged in his leg he just always kept it in his pocket for sentimental reasons because his wife gave it to him early in the war. He was shot in the upper thigh where the coin was and the coin prevented the bullet from penetrating his leg but he was seriously injured and walked with a limp after that. He always considered it to be his lucky coin after that. Show less REPLY

Hi Rebel, Thanx for your service. Just a small FYI … the Lady who gave the coin to Dixon, Queenie Bennett … was his fiancée. They would have been married had he survived the war. Semper Fi … ^v^

Reminds me of DogBoots (Das Boot). Just imagine navigating in that cold, dark, metal casket, w/it's inadequate ventilation, cramped quarters, constant fear of going Boom too soon. A claustrophobian nightmare! Funny u mentioned Verne: I just went down to my neighborhood library & what do I find on the free shelf? A hardcopy of "A Journey to the Center of the Earth!" Okay, it's a 90's Reader's Digest Ed, but still, it's mine now, & I've some interesting evening reading ahead.

You will be so awe-struck. Please understand these fellows knew there was a very, very good chance they were going to die in a horrible way. And they did. This is heroism at its highest level - no matter who they were fighting for. Please think about that. Cherish the belief. Cherish the purity of their sacrifice.

The coin was not lodged in Dixon's leg. It saved his life, so he kept it in his pocket as a good luck charm. The coin was actually a legend and no one knew if it was true, (or even existed) until it was found in his pocket when the remains were being excavated.

I was looking through the comments to see it anyone clarified this to him. The coin was given to him by a sweetheart as a good luck charm. After it deflected a bullet in Shiloh, he had it engraved with the date of the battle, his initials, and the words, "My Life Preserver". It's so cool to me that the story was legend, like you stated, until being found on the Hunley. I really "nerded out" when I learned it. 🤓

The gold coin was not lodged in Lt. Dixon's leg. It deflexed the mini-ball that struck Dixon and after this happened Dixon had the coin engraved stating it was his life preserver at the battle of Shiloh.

Where did you get that "coin in the leg" nonsense. If it was in his leg, how did he have it engraved "Shiloh, 1862, My Life Preserver". It was in his pocket, a 20 dollar gold US coin given him for luck by his fiancé. I have a replica purchased thru "Friends of the Hunley".

Ok you have of your facts correct on the Hunley. The Hunley has been something I have been interested in for 57 years. THe coin was a gift from Dixon's bride to be Queenie Bennett. It was a 20 dollar gold piece. Dixon was in the Battle of Shiloh. Dixon was shot in the.leg the bullet hit the coin before going in the flesh and his leg was injured. Dixon was sent to obile Mobile in Alabama to mend, he had the coin engraved, my life preserver April 6-7, 1862. There's more if you need it I am running out of space .

I am a huge fan of Clive Cussler, too. I just finished reading Deep Six and Valhalla Rising and am now reading Dragon. I am trying to collect all of his books. But I still love his books. I knew what NUMA meant! So neat.

I'm led to believe the way they stopped the Hunley sinking , was by placing the conning tower on it so that when the people got in and the weight would lower the Hunley in the water and the waves would spill in too , is this true , as you did not mention this ?

Lots of people are a bit camera-shy about being tossed out on KZfaq to be seen by thousands or millions, but I think she's getting more comfortable with the idea now. :-)

What caused the Hunley to sink? Anyone know
@MrJest2
@MrJest2 7 жыл бұрын
It's not entirely clear. The prevailing theory is that they were caught up in the blast of their own spar torpedo. In that time, the physics of underwater explosions were poorly understood, and they likely just weren't able to retreat far enough away fast enough before it went off.
@taproom113
@taproom113 6 жыл бұрын
MrJest2 - That's looking like the best explanation, after the latest revelation. The 'torpedo' was encased in copper and mounted to the spar. When recovered, the copper mounting joint was still on the spar and was peeled back indicating the torpedo exploded while still on the spar …. probably as a result of impact forces. We're hoping Ultrasonic stress analysis of the hull can provide insight to the effects of the shockwave propagation into the crew compartment and how incapacitating it would have been. ^v^

The Hunley didnt sink, they say on the bottom of the harbor waiting for the harbor to clear. They fell asleep and it wasn't sleep but death I'm not sure of the spelling annoxia. They ran out.of air and was breathing carbon monoxide and they died at their stations.
