For James Cameron's classic science fiction film The Abyss (1989), the filmmaker and his team had real working miniature submarines built for the underwater exploration and chase sequences! Adam encounters one of the surviving miniatures at Propstore, where he takes a look at the incredible interior detail, working lights, and real weathering this remote controlled effects prop sustained during filming.

Two of the first things that caught my eyes were the police badges of Axel Foley and Billy Rosewood fro the Beverly Hills Cop movies. Such iconic scenes those props were used for. Is there any chance that Adam ever would try to replicate one of those as a project?

It’s been called The Hardest Movie Shoot Ever, or something like that, according to the DVD extras. I always thought a retelling of its difficulties and the stress everyone was under (a movie shoot within a movie) could make for some great cinema. But for cost and safety reasons you can’t really go back to that unfinished reactor site in SC to shoot the shoot. IIRC that place was eventually demolished. It could only be recreated with today’s very best CGI production values. But who would play James Cameron of 30 yrs ago?😮

Until there is recognition that CGI looks too polished and new, we will not see phsucial models used again. Watching that chase scene in The Abyss, it feels like you are there. You feel like you were in the sub and being hit by the other sub. Doubt the suspension of belief would have been there with CGI.

@@gorillaau There are still directors who use Miniatures regularly, and even more are warming to the idea that they look so much better for some applications. Most people don't even realize how often they are used because they look so real, or because everybody just assumes that "it's CGI" when they see them. They will be coming back, it's just a question of when.

Ron Cobb Directed a film called 'Garbo' in Melbourne, about a robotic AI garbage truck. I got to do work experience on it waaaaay back in 1990, but nobody told me on set that the guy directing was one of my favourite designers. Looking back, the truck was distinctly a Cobb design, but I guess it would have seemed very unlikely that he'd be in Australia. Not a bad film, and a ripper soundtrack!

The supposed Blu-ray version of "The Abyss" classic film has been said to be coming out ever since Blu-rays first began, and yet, nothing so far. There is an HD digital version (which I have stored away in my collection of films in that format) that is excellent, but an actual 1080p or 4K disc has been desired by fans for many years now. I really don't see what the hold up is considering all the other Cameron movies have been released in that format now.

Power transistors are there for motor drive, for that big brushed motor used there to drive it. 8 power transistors, probably 2N3773 or 2N3055, so you need 2 in parallel, and then 4 of those pairs, to make the H bridge that provides the motor drive. Likely there are smaller transistors attached at the back to provide drive for them, along with more there to power the smaller motors used for attitude control as well.

Hey Adam. Love the content. I believe neutral buoyancy is consistent at various depths. As long as the body's volume resembles the density of water you're good to go. With a rigid body like this model it shouldn't change. Remember water compresses very little so adding more atmospheres pressure at depth doesn't throw buoyancy off.

Just to be pedantic, and simply because I can: for a rigid object such as this model, the depth doesn't play a role in neutral buoyancy. The density of the water is the same (it does increase slightly with depth but it isn't enough to be relevant here), the volume displaced and gravity too. Adam is right when talking about divers though. The vest/ inflation bladder, the human soft tissues and of course the lungs do compress and expand according to pressure.

Probably all for motor control for the main drive motor, as that probably drew 20A from the 12V battery. So 8 2N3055 or 2N3773 there, so you could have both speed control and reverse. Smaller motors driven by a TIP3055 probably on the back of that aluminium panel or the other side of the heatsink tunnel. Lights would be simply a relay, driven by one of the spare channels on the RC remote that can be used to give multiple digital outputs.

@@paulbennett4548 But not at the same time, SOA limited and also limited by Hfe droop, so that you could expect 5A and 10V across the transistors, unless you wanted to drive them with 5A base current, then you could saturate them at 15A, with 1V across them. 90W if you can keep the case at 25C, but in reality only 30W with a heatsink about the size of a dinner plate.

The transistors are likely attitude control under water. If they either (in pairs) or alone match the number of thrusters, that's what they are.

@@2000jago First part is an opinion. Last part is "if that's the case, that's what they are". It's an IF sentence. I forgot to say number of functions, because it was late when i made the comment. I've been playing with old school RC for two decades now. Not the first time i've seen them used for that.

I remember reading about some urban explorers tracking down the abandoned set of the abyss movie years back, I think the blog was from the mid 90s and they had a bunch of pictures from the rusting remains of the set

That submersible is definitely inspired by the Alvin DSV. The resemblance is uncanny.
