Really awesome video!!! So cool to see people stepping out of the stereotypical holiday experience. Life is short so we should make the most of it and experience new things, just like you guys.

Many years ago I had a friend who was a freelance outdoor writer and photographer. How to get better at taking good pictures? Take more pictures. This was back in the days before digital photography. He said a good rule of thumb was that only 1 in 12 photographs would meet your level of standards. As your skills increased, your standards elevate, and you still will only have 1 in 12 that meet your standards. I think today he would make the fraction even smaller as most people tend to take many, many more pictures in hopes of getting acceptable results. I certainly do. I learned a lot from him. He made a very good living at writing and photography, so I was fortunate to have all the free advice. I also had a weekly newspaper column at the time and he critiqued that. A lot! At that time I was doing wildlife photography for fun and several of my slides (yeah, that long ago - late 1980s) were used in an official slide show presentation in an area welcome center. I think there's a balance between "dropped in the wilderness" and "total safety net." And I think that the comfort level is going to be different for everyone. "Balance them," as you say. Three months would be too long for me. I'd have been looking towards the horizon around the same time you were. At the end of the day, I think you were lucky to land where you did, with decent people, a chance to learn new life skills, and a beautiful location. Would you have gotten as much out of it if you had just landed there on your own, with no knowledge of the language and local customs or area? You both seem to be flexible and adaptive people. But everyone needs a little help sometimes.

"Would you have gotten as much out of it if you had just landed there on your own, with no knowledge of the language and local customs or area?" is a hard question to answer, but we certainly would have had a different experience. We would have met different people and gone to different places. We definitely wouldn't have learnt as much about the history of the area and certain aspects of the culture. Ben & Emma are walking encyclopaedias 😊. It sounds like your friend was an interesting person to have around. Though I think 12 is a difficult number to reach consistently! It must have been a totally different experience to have your slides shown to the public back before the age of the digital and the internet - sounds wonderful! I agree we were lucky and I would do it all over again! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Grady.

Thank you so very much for sharing your Workaway experience. My husband and I have been considering it for our family for some time now and this was very helpful. We understand the dynamic will be quite different as we will be traveling with teens but it was wonderful to hear your story and I think that everything you shared will be beneficial to us as we make our decision. Blessings to you both!♥️💙

I have no idea why this video has shown up on my front page for 3 times, despite being a relatively small channel that I've never even interacted with before. Doesn't really apply to me, but it's very informative.

HelpX is another one to consider. Also, with these opportunities, I think you have to make it clear what hours and work you are willing to do. Some hosts try to max out your free labour, so be careful. Do your research, read the reviews, and if you are not sure ask for previous volunteers contact details.

This is incredible! However when I host for a project, I have only a campsite to offer, but there is at least a nice fire pit and a “kitchen” so food won’t be a problem. I am just worried workawayer’s will become bored. All I have to offer for entertainment is kayaking the river, games on our pond, some cave exploration and a couple interesting spots but nothing like skiing or snowboarding. I am so afraid young people will find this too boring in their off time. But the project is a good cause so maybe that will make up some difference.

I don't know the exact phrase you're referring to but there is a filler phrase in chinese,那个 (na ge/ne ge) which doesn't really mean anything - a bit like how we use "like." It causes a lot of confusion!

@@EllaScott I think they meant the part in the country's name that's not "Monte"... It's the original form of the bad word in the US context. But it's also used by many other languages and simply means "black".
@EllaScott
@EllaScott 2 жыл бұрын
@@zhuofanzhang9974 Ah yes that makes sense. In montenegrin it's crnagora (literally black hill) and in other languages it's often translated literally (e.g. china 黑山 - black mountain), but in English we seem to have it different.
