The press tool kit you have there is very handy. I use it for so many other things that just wheel bearings.

I have a 1999 SL500. I watched this video to get an idea on how to do this job. I found it very informative. To get the axle bolts off, it is important to keep the wrench tight and straight. In the end, I made myself a crude breaker bar to loosen them up. I took a deep well socket, stuck it on the end of my wrench, and then stuck an extension on the end of the socket. This allowed me to use my left hand to hold the wrench straight and pull with my right hand. Made getting them loose a lot easier. Then I just used the wrench to take them the rest of the way out.

Nice work as usual Vito. You manage with whatever tools you have, by understanding the principles of what you’re working on. You also learn from your mistakes. Brava! My suspicion is the dust guard was cut when non-standard rear springs and shocks were installed instead of working around the guard, or removing it.

SKF is always a safe choice as it's one of If not the best bearing manufacturer out there. I'm glad to see you're keeping this thing on the road as I'm sure it has still a lot of life in it. Greetings from Europe :)

Hey Vito I would check your subframe mounts now and protect them. The rubber undercoating is very deceiving it looks great but underneath moisture gets in and it rusts. I was shocked on my W124 and plan to remove all the rubber undercoating.
