Turning the side of the preload adjuster closest to the rear tyre - towards the exhaust, increases the preload allowing for larger load. If you are riding with a pillion or with luggage I would suggest increasing preload. I hope this helps 😊

Hey buddy, great informative, well put together, professional, polished video!! I've subscribed and looking forward to seeing more videos on maintenance. I live in South Australia and got my Transalp but a bit of a newbie. I wanted to learn how to look after it myself. There is so little information out there for new Transalp owners, unlike Royal Enfields etc, which have a massive wealth of information. So I reckon if you target this new and growing group of TA owners you'll get a good following. Thanks again, safe riding!

It's not my first bike by any means. But the first time I've been adventurous enough to get an Adventure Bike, and got around to finding out how they actually work, rather than just relying on mechanics (that sounds a bit crappy, I know). So initially I got a Royal Enfield Himalyan to get used to going off-road. It only took a couple of months before I had the confidence to go off road and by then I realised that RE just did not have the power I needed for the road. So I traded it in - and I bloody well love the TA. I loved my Triumph Bonnevile before, as a cool looking Cafe Racer, but this bike, functionally, is far superior to anything I've had before. It really puts a smile on my face, especially when I'm off-road!

Hello 👋 Thank you very much for the feedback and for your comment 😊 You can just about see which setting the rear shock is on if you look through the hole in the frame on the right hand side of your bike. You will be able to see the steps on the adjuster ring and the notch which sits on the adjuster ring steps. If you are struggling to see, turn the adjuster ring all the way to the softest setting (turning the adjuster ring away from the exhaust). Count the number of steps/clicks until it will not go any further. You can then increase the preload back the same number of steps/clicks back to where you had it. I hope this helps and makes sense?

It’s hard to describe but if you stand on the right hand side of your bike and look through the frame at the shock. You can see which notch / step on the preload ring that the shock is sat on. There are 7 notches / steps in total and I believe the bikes comes on setting 3 as standard but this does seem to vary. If you cannot see which setting it is on… you can always turn the preload adjuster away from the exhaust and count the clicks until it stops, which will be the softest setting. You can then count back up to where it was or until you reach your desired setting. I hope this makes sense and helps 😊

Hello, sorry if I haven’t made this very clear in the video… Turning the side of the preload ring closest to the rear tyre towards the exhaust, increases preload. In another way, looking from the top of the bike down onto the shock, the preload ring would need to be turned anti-clockwise to increase preload. I hope that helps?

@@TyresNTorque This is direct from the manual: "Adjusting the Rear Suspension # Spring Preload You can adjust the spring preload by the adjuster to suit the load or the road surface. Turn the adjuster using the pin spanner and extension bar provided in the tool kit. The preload adjuster has 7 positions. Positions 1 is for a decrease spring preload (soft), or turn the position 3 to 7 to increase spring preload (hard). The standard position is 2. It includes a graphic that shows you would have to turn it clockwise (as seen from above) to increase the position number from 2 to 7, and thus preload. CW makes the most sense as well since it would be compressing the spring (righty tighty).

Hello, thank you for your comment. I did question this when making this video but from what I can see this is the correct way around. Turning towards the exhaust puts the adjuster on the next higher/tighter step and increases preload. Turning away from the exhaust drop it onto a lower step and decreases preload. @TyresNTorque Ай бұрын
Hello, thank you very much for your comment 😊 It’s hard to say to be honest as it comes down to how you want the bike to feel and ride. However you will need to increase the preload over what it would be set to for a single rider / standard from Honda. My suggestion would be to increase the preload by 2 or 3 clicks, and take the bike for a short test ride to see how it feels with the 2 of you and your luggage on the bike. Keep the preload adjuster tool to hand so you can change the preload mid-ride if it doesn’t feel right. Either way I would try a few different setting to see what you prefer. Sorry I know this doesn’t give you a definite answer. What setting do you currently have it set to?

Hello, thank you for your comment 😊 If you turn the bottom of the preload ring towards the exhaust (anti-clockwise) it will increase preload. You are right. Turning towards exhaust moving the thick end of collar to where the piston is seating thus compress the spring. Increase preload! I am light weight so I want to set it to minimum preload to reduce seat height.
@TyresNTorque
@TyresNTorque 4 ай бұрын

@chrishart8548
@chrishart8548 7 ай бұрын
It's not softer or harder. It should be soft during the entire stroke of the shock until you bottom out the suspension. And if it's hard it means you have to much preload and you don't have enough weight to make the suspension move... soft and hard is compression damping.
@TyresNTorque
@TyresNTorque 7 ай бұрын
@@chrishart8548 Hello 😊 Thank you for your comment. Increasing preload makes the ride a little more stiff / hard and decreasing preload makes the ride a little less harsh / softer. I personally increased my preload by 2 but found the ride a little harsh. So I have dropped back 1 and it is perfect. Your set up will be dictated by your weight, whether or not your have a pillion on your bike regularly, how much luggage your carry and how you like your bike to perform. I suppose it will be different for everyone 😊 What do you ride Chris? 😊

@TyresNTorque 2014 BMW F800GS I don't have any preload if I'm riding solo it's just backed right off. When I take my wife on the back I add all the preload it has we have plenty of weight to move it even more than just me on the bike with no pre load. It also has ESA that does the rebound damping, I find it rather good. Has sport and comfort. In sport it really corners. And comfort is comfortable but if you get carried away on a fast corner it really starts wallowing and gets out of shape.

@@chrishart8548 I love the GS, I learnt to ride and did my test on a 750 GS, such a great bike. I almost purchased the 850. That’s brilliant! Thank you for sharing this 😊 A lot of people seem to find the suspension on the Transalp 750 a little unstable and soft, particularly when riding enthusiastically. I noticed this slightly when I first got my bike but I have sorted it out with the preload adjustment. I have also made a small adjustment to the fork too. I don’t ride fast though so it hasn’t been a huge issue for me. Maybe Honda will give the Transalp more adjustable suspension or maybe even electronically adjustable suspension in the future? A lot of people have commented on this on various online forums. I’m keen to see if they change it for 2024/2025. Does your wife ride too or just as a pillion?

It has a stepped ring, like an old twin shock, but yes - it goes 'the wrong way' compared to a threaded preload adjuster. Bonkers, but there are a few odd touches on this bike (like the blinker and horn switches). If you remove the rear brake reservoir (one 6mm bolt, requiring an 8mm socket) the steps will be visible, and the adjustment direction will make sense. But with this adjuster obscured by the reservoir, I suspect many will have scratched their heads over this one! But the solution to this will be a decent rear shock absorber, with a threaded preload adjuster, and many of us bought the bike (at its cheap price) knowing this. Nice bike - pity about the suspension...

Don't give up Podunkman. After 5,000 kms on my new Transalp, which I bought in spite of strong doubts, I can assure you that the engine vibrations reduce markedly over the first few thousand kilometres, and those zzsh zzsh whiney engine noises diminish. Difficult to believe perhaps, but true! It honestly gets better as you go. The bike is much lighter than the V-Strom 800, and has no heat on the legs that I can detect. But yes, it definitely needs some suspension work for the more experienced rider, and its cheaper price than the Suzuki or Aprilia (at least in Australia) allow for that. But that is easier to resolve than inherent drawbacks like engine heat, excessive weight, or a too-high seat. I suggest you take another test ride, and reassess your view of the model before ruling it out. It has the best basic specs of the various offerings, and comes at a price that allows for some improvements. You get a good starting point on your 'adventure bike project' for not much money. It even has a good sound from stock! I bought mine in spite of real reservations after the (one-hour) test ride, but after some work, and some accustomisation, I am really enjoying it, in spite of my 50 years on mainly Ducatis (Triumphs before that...) and my (Ducati-engined) Cagiva Elefant 750. Reversing the handlebar risers also improves the steering feel, which was one of my main 'gripes' initially, as the steering just didn't feel right, and was something of a breakthrough in my relationship with the 'Jap job' when I did the experiment. It had always handled well, but just didn't feel quite right. Nice to discover that a ten-minute free procedure made so much difference! I reckon they should come out with the risers set this way. Better standing up too. Perhaps try another test ride, with an open mind, in the light of these experiences. My reflections come after 61 years of riding, long research into the various choices, and a great many miles on a range of machines. I also worked on motorcycles professionally for over 50 years, and am pretty fussy...
