Your idea about interacting with our sentimental items on a more regular basis was one I haven't heard from other minimalists. It was so clear watching you that you are indeed a sentimental person and that you make space in your life for the items you deem most precious, and that this practice is not in conflict with your minimalist lifestyle. I appreciate the way you shared this perspective with us. Watching you hold your special treasures and share your memories in such a raw, vulnerable, and joyful way was very moving. Thank you.

One tip that has helped me is to be ruthlessly honest with myself about exactly WHO I am keeping the items for. Am I keeping it truly only for myself or future children or if not yet married then keeping items to 'show' a future spouse. It's not that I can't keep items for those other 'people' but just to be aware of who you are really keeping it for and how much. This helped me get rid of a lot when I realized I was keeping so much for 'other people'. Realistically, my kids or future partner isn't going to sit for hours and hours looking at all of these 'sentimental 'items. I have to remember they are sentimental to me ...to others it is usually just some old stuff. I also had a near death experience and it helped me to really be more mindful that I do not want to leave so much stuff ( that is again sentimental to me but not others). I was able to get rid of 4 large Rubbermaid bins of my sentimental items. I still would like to get rid of more in time.

I have my grandfathers prayer beads 📿 and i keep them on my coffee table in a beautiful bowl that my MIL gave me for Christmas 20 years ago, which is filled with little pieces of driftwood from all our travels. The prayer beads are laying over the wood and hanging off the bowl. The bowl sits on two books: kite-life because we are Kiteboarders & Down to Earth because we are simple minimalist. This whole center piece is sentimental and beautifully artistic and brings me so much joy.

Haha, I also have my old passport and two old student ID cards 😁 The first tip had kind of a wow effect on me ^^ it is obvious but also easily overlooked I guess. And the other ones sound very good too! I decluttered some sentimental items of mine and the rest is waiting. Minimalism is well known for the idea of "experiences over things" and I think this is a great and useful idea. Regarding sentimental items though it is very astonishing how these things help to keep those experiences as memories. Splendid :) And shedding some tears while going through sentimental items can be quite beautiful 😌

Great video, Rebecca! You clearly have a great choice of sentimental items because of your emotions towards them ❤️ Your wedding dress is so pretty! I personally don't like taking pictures of sentimental items because I like watching and touching them but I don't keep many sentimental items either. 1. A bag with some toys from my childhood, to pass on to a future child 2. A small box with my school uniform from senior year. In Argentina on the last day of school your classmates sign or write something nice on your t-shirt with marker, so it lasts forever. 3. A (decorated) shoebox with my MOST sentimental items (letters from friends, my grandpa, my bf, my students; tickets from concerts, etc), and I keep it on my shelf to always see it ❤️ I also have my graduation hat on a shelf, so it's decor/sentimental/storage all together haha. I like keeping things where I can see them and interact with them, not where I can forget about them 😊

Great idea to keep your treasures in an easily accessible location. I recently took out my wedding dress (stored in one of those air tight, acid free boxes) for my daughter to look at because she had only ever seen it in pictures. It still made me well up with happy tears about our wedding over 20 years ago! Thank you for sharing your most special memories with us. ❤️

I also recommend taking photos of sentimental items you are going to keep and store in the cloud.....we have bad forest fires every year so I am. very conscious of fires...many people have lost their homes in my city previous years. So, if you only take photos of the ones that aren't as special and 'something ' happens like a fire, then you wouldn't even have a photo of your MOST precious items. A photo is better than it being completely gone.

Hmmm not sure where you got that 😊 What I actually said was to keep sentimental objects in an obvious place. I go on to say specifically that my items are not part of my decor but they are in visible and reachable place. This way I am reminded to interact with them and enjoy them. If I were to keep my sentimental box in, say, the attic it would be harder to access and enjoy. The box is one of the only things out in our bedroom.

Rebecca, if you feel alright telling us this information, may we ask how old you are? It would kind of put into perspective the amount of sentimental things you have in relation to how many years you've lived and how much you are able to keep or let go. Of course if you don't feel comfortable telling us this info or saying sth approximate, that is also fine and I deeply respect you. I just thought perhaps it would help us gain some perspective. Thank you!
