I love your videos! It takes me back to when I had to help Dad get a vehicle running over the weekend so he could go to work on Monday. It was ALWAYS a crunch. But after I was grown he got his hands on a 69 Mach 1. We had that thing singing a tune when he passed. Anyway, thank you for sharing these projects with your son. This world would be a much better place if dads did more of this. God Bless y'all and I can't wait for more vids!

As an ex engine builder from a legit shop it wasn't uncommon to build a $20,000 hemi motor that being said I totally approve of the way you did this engine I wouldn't have done it any different even if I had extra money to burn on it sometimes just throwing the bare minimum at it it's all it's going to take to have a good strong running motor for his car and it's not like he's bone freaking drag car or a race car or anything she's got to be good in reliable for him you're teaching them that you don't have to have a big budget to do this stuff I've hodgepodged all kinds of engines and shit together in my time there's been many times people told me what I was doing was wrong or the wrong way or it's not going to work and there's nothing greater than when it does.

Congratulations on the growing of your channel every time I go on I can see you gaining more and more followers it's cuz you're genuinely one guy to watch keep up all the hard work thank you.

Back in 1959 engine choices were a 6 cyl. OHV 223 Cu. In.---V8 OHV 292 Cu.In.----V8 OHV 332 Cu.In.-----V8 OHV 352 Cu.In. I would of loved to had a 390 in one of mine. Jd in so lucky to have a 1959 like his, it beats what I had in 1968 & 1969, so much better pickings and technology in today's world than what I had in 69. Wish I had a time machine .

Back in 1979 I got an F150 with an exploded clutch, 300 inline 6. The explosion blew the bell housing up and took the mounting tabs on the block with it. The donor engine had been dumped in a ditch 4-5 years earlier and was rusted pretty much solid. It was beat apart, sand papered and reassembled using whatever looked best out of the pile of junk. I got 50,000 miles out of that engine. Had to carry an extra 3/8 bolt and a 9/16 wrench 'cause the starter only had one good mount hole and it fell off occasionally.

I built my 394 ci bored 390. With my son 30 years ago, my son was about your sons age. I ported the heads and let him assemble them. I lightened the stock crank and rebalanced it polished the rods and peened them, lightened the forged pistons and we put it all together with an aluminum intake and a 236@.050 cam and took it to the dyno. It made 488 ft lbs and 503 hp at 6300. The compression was 11:1. It still runs beautifully with that solid cam. The 65 Galaxie it’s in only weighs 3600 lbs. That thing is still spooky, it will burn the tires through first, 2nd and moves in 3 rd on street tires. 30 years and it still runs like a champ, no leaks no blowby.

Reliability is so much more important for a " legacy build, father son projects build much more than engines and cars, they build memories and life experience. This is the true value of projects like this, teaching the care and prep of assembly, those little details end up being lifelong knowledge that applies to everything in life💯

No such thing as an okay ford motor lol they are all time bombs with a short timer. You get it running and it runs good then out of nowhere it dies and leaves you stranded looking for answers praying its not a broken part and something fixable only to find a broken part. Ask me how i know

But I have every single 391 truck block I have come across and a sonic showing .150 left between the bowls and .190 major thrust left after a bore to 4.13 you have a 406 or a 428 with a 410 Mercury or a 428 crank. Edelbrock heads or ported CJs and you have a twin peeler wheeler!

@@ratedredneck96 I built the 390 in my Galaxie 25 years ago that was in my High Boy, my 67 F100 before that stock, and in its original home the 1969 Galaxie it came in and we received as a wedding present 42 years ago. It never left us stranded. My wife drove it with two of her friends before we met to California from eastern South Dakota and back, and never got stranded. Good maintenance is all it takes. Fords and any other make is all the same to me as far as working on. That’s half the fun.

Oh of course one more thing I have to say!! It is definitely awesome to see your 11 year old boy out working on car and truck stuff for sure!!! I’m pretty sure he is the only 11 year old that I have ever seen do as much as he has done on his 390 Ford engine!!! Usually they would definitely get really bored in the first 20 minutes!!! As long as you teach him the Wright way he might just be better then dad when he gets older!!! Definitely an awesome 11 year old!!! He would rather be out helping dad on Vehicales instead of inside playing video games!!! I definitely always wanted to be outside also when I was younger!!! I remember being 12 or 13 and working on a 1972 Chevy truck that my dad wrecked and told me he would help me rebuild it!!! 2 years later he still hadn’t started to help me so I started in on it and was able to do just about everything myself other than the farmer that was renting pastor ground across the road from my mom and dad he had stopped by to help me flip the box over backwards and off of the frame!!! I wasn’t quite tall enough to get it to go all the way over!!! I remember trying and trying and trying and I just couldn’t make it happen because of my height!!! Lol!!! Plus those older pickup box’s are definitely heavier!!! Lol!!!

I'm going to throw this out there, I'm only 1:25 in so far, but listen when it comes to that lapping compound, it's like magic. It starts off at a very rough grit, and as you go it thins out, it almost gets wet with oil as your lapping, you lift and reseat the compound and drop it back in and now you're up at a finer grit. That stuff is pretty amazing and it works SO well. I had to do the valves on an 04 Honda Pilot 3.5, ha the camshaft blew the bearing out (ugh) of the head.. that was fun! I thought my timing belt broke.. nope, well I mean it did but not because the timing belt was bad, it was lack of oil up there on the cam.. anyway.. yeah that lapping compound is amazing for like $5.99!! edit: One other little thing, and I know you know what you're doing, clearly.. but whenever I replace a valve spring and its keeper, after I take the puller off, I tap it a couple times with a hammer. Hard. Make sure those keepers are in place. ONE TIME I had one pop out, and man if that happened inside a closed engine.. uh.. it would probably be really really bad. Catastrophic one might say.. so that's a tip my old man taught me many many moons ago.

I know that your approaches are not always "conventional" or "good", but I like that you demonstrate that pretty much everything can be fixed with a hammer, hacksaw, rubber hose and screwdriver. :) I will likely never completely rebuild an engine but I like to think that in a pinch with enough time on Google I could figure it out. Watching you go through the process helps with building that confidence and reduces the intimidation factor by about 63.6%.

You did it the right way. You want a nice pattern all the way around the valve. The ideal spot is just above the center portion of the valve seat on the valve.

I have asked that question ❓⁉️, Good morning and dying to see the fruit and work of the labor and waiting for you and the parts.

Have to be in shape to crank them out in the 70's and early 80's. Did it for 40 years

First rule in engine building. Those cork end gaskets go in the garbage. A nice silicone bead from 1 head to the other squishes beautifully when the intake is installed.

This would've required at least 2 inches of silicone. Second rule of engine building, don't fill the engine with silicone

oooo yeah....FE intake manifolds. The work of Beelzebub...! Make sure you've got the rocker bolts in the right holes. One each side is cut back to provide the oil way to the heads. If you put a full bolt in those holes you wont get any oil to the top end.

Nothing beats the old Clam shell clamp valve spring compressor. Now you know why the aftermarket aluminum intakes for Ford are so nice.. they are light..
