Rebuilding a Hydro Gear BDP-10A

In this video we take apart a noisy Hydro Gear BDP-10A pump and rebuild it. The tractor had a hydraulic line failure previously, and I was told there was no proper fluid in the field, so hydraulic oil from a lift truck was used. The right side pump seems fine, but the left side pump was noisy and not a strong as the right side pump. With a new pump at over $400, we replaced the common wear parts and got the unit going again.

Thanks for the video, Great Dane 52" mower since new over 20 years old. The RH Pump started leaking under the drive pully. Thank you for the seal kit part numbers. New pump 475, or a seal kit from Amazon 34 dollars. I decided a no brainer went with 34 dollars Amazon.

Little metal flakes or burs jam between the housing and the little bullet looking things. The surface is so fine machined that just a little but of metal flakes/ dust locks it all up

Quick question. First off can’t thank you enough for making this! I’m working on a BDU-10L-218 that has a broken shaft right at the bearing retaining clip from overtightening Kevlar belt with frozen up belt tensioner. My question is can I replace the shaft without splitting the case? Seems like if I keep it bearing facing down I could lightly tap out the shaft with bearing and slide up the new one.

Yep, sure did. Tractor is still in service as far as I know. I haven't seen it in a long time though so not 100% sure.

Bearing part number? It's not listed with the rest. Would you still have it? Not fond of the china bearing if I'm rebuilding it..

did the manual call for coating the o-rings? Normally I like to keep rubber oil free due to it making rubber swell. Also, if you have to do another pump, disassemble it in an open oil pan, will keep that mess off your shop counters and then you can pour it in a collection container.

I honestly don't recall - whenever I re-assemble anything with a seal that keeps in an oil or lubricant, I generally coat the seal with that same lubricant - in this case, engine oil. That technique has always served me well. I wasn't expecting that much oil to come out of it - having never seen the inside of one of those pumps until then, I didn't know what to expect. I'll definitely disassemble them in a pan in the future though!

Head over to Toro's website for the z master Z528: www.toro.com/en/parts/partdetails?id=31158. I believe the manual for the BDP 10A is the second choice in the service manual drop down

ON the charge pump gear it has a location dot. Did I hear you say they were on opposite sides?

Yes I think you're right but I recall reading documentation later on that suggested it didn't matter.

Doing this complete rebuild off your video basically.. but I'm wanting to replace the Main Bearing and Thrust Bearing.. do you have any part numbers or links for those that are Not China bearings .. would be very helpful. Thanks!

This was a while ago, but looking at my amazon order history, I am pretty sure this is the ball bearing I used: amzn.to/3FB0Yhp. It is made by SKF, a well-known brand. I don't recall replacing the thrust bearing but could be wrong :)

When u put the pulley back on the shaft was there play between shaft and pulley? My pulley kinda is loose when I tighten both set screws it doesn't spin perfectly circle, seems like a bad design.

Yeah there was no play on mine. There might be something wonky going on with yours.

It is a 4.5L unit. This is the one I use www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074XB5HSV. Bought it over 2 years ago and it still works very well! Only regret is not getting a bigger one.

How did you determine it was the left pump, and not the right, before removal of the pump? And your garage is awe inspiring - so clean and organized.

Thank you for the compliment! I do try and keep it tidy. It was actually pretty clear it was the left pump. It was a lot noisier and could not keep up with the right side causing the tractor to pull to the left.

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC thank you for replying so quickly! I'm having trouble with my 17 yr old Yazoo Kees 61" commercial zero turn since July when it started bogging down. It runs better in reverse than forward. The 3rd place that has tried to repair it said it might be the hydraulics, which was above his skill set so my brother is looking at it.

@@jeanbean1390 before you condemn the hydrostatic drive Make sure there is no air in the system. If your mower has a reservoir make sure you don't see any fine air bubbles in there. If you do you probably have a leak on the suction side somewhere. If there's no visible air I would tear into it sooner rather than later before any expensive damage occurs. This was my first time working on a hydrostatic pump and it really was not that difficult. Just pay attention to how things came apart, inspect all the parts carefully, and make sure everything is meticulously clean when you put it back together

Wow, thanks.! I'm doing an old BDP-10L .. I expect it to be very similar... THANKS.! ... hope subscribing gets you some $... With my dog... Never set down a screwdriver (always find them with the mower... Hard on the blades)
