change the oil often on those hydrogear transmissions, makes a huge difference. almost as often as you change the oil on your motor. ive had huge performance restoration from dropping the oil. the heat absorbing properties eventually wear out the fluids functioning and it has to be changed.

Thank you for a great job!! Everything else on youtube is just guys changing the oil with their home-grown approach. I am a novice who just purchased a used Exmark and I was looking for a tutorial overview of how these typical systems work including the directional flow and purpose of the various hoses and the pumping logic and function. You did a marvelous job showing and explaining with great clarity and precision. I was starved for a clear dissemination of the basic parts and basic process. It was a joy listening to you and following your discourse. You are a very effective communicator and a very capable instructor. I am in your debt. Again, thanks very much! EXCELLENT WORK!!!

The video failed to mention pre-filling the new oil filter. Always allow some extra time to let all the air purge out of the oil filter element while completely filling it with fresh Mobil 1 15w50. This helps eliminate a huge amount of air getting into the pump and motor, and prevents momentary oil starvation. You will only lose a very small amount of what's in the filter when threading it into position on the filter mount. It's a good idea to take this extra step on all equipment that use spin on filters. Some manufacturers either strongly recommend, or require this prefilling of the new filters on all their equipment and engines.

Hi Ed, I have a Gen 1 Stander X. There was a lot of debris and buildup around both hydros so while rebuilding the engine I took opportunity to clean them up and replace the low pressure feed and return lines. I replaced the fluid and filter (OEM) after the line replacements. I now cannot get the system to bleed. I am following recommendations in the service manual (jacked up and cycling levers with bypass valves both open and closed). Both wheels turn lethargically and can be easily stopped by hand. Any suggestions? I believe the pumps are at the end of their lives (high time-passive leaks) but I’d really like to get them bled and working in the interim. Thanks. -Max

The relief valve on one of our machines is super tight in the threads regardless of loosening or tightened. Im the only one to ever loosen it and it was the first time this year. I'm new to Hydro pumps and motors. I purchased a well used SCAG TT. There's quite a bit of slop in the controls and it appears to be in the linkage that moves the plate in the pump. So my question is, is it worth rebuilding. I will not be using it commercially, just to maintain my 3 acres which are not going to be mowed on a regular basis.

Realize you will not answer this. Just wanted to say as someone thats spent many days, weeks, or years in factory training classes the key is knowing the difference in scoring and discolored hard parts. If your fingernail hangs on the scoring it is trashed. I am going to have to watch this video many times to get the diagnostics down and not having that gauge set to figure out what is worth going into a rebuild.

I work at a Grasshopper dealer and get this question quite often. The short answer is no. You can tweak the neutral setting to gain a little. Also you can turn up the RPMs on the engine a little. I wouldn't go any higher than 3680. Some go higher but these engines are designed to run 3600. The small amount of ground speed you'll gain isn't worth the extra engine wear. Hope this helps.

We have a Great Dane 61 inch Zero Turn mower. that left side stopped. we replaced the pump. still same. so we replaced the wheel motor. but its shorter and totally different. because Ross is not in business anymore. we filled new filter with oil. jacked up mower back end. Started it , worked lever back and forth for almost 30 mins. we also did it with free wheel set on pump. It just dont want to turn wheel much at all.. and when we push lever all way forwards or backwards. it make pump sound like its got air in it or Lack of oil. Over $1200.00 in the one side so far..and nothing.. any ideal before it goes to scrap. and eat the $ we have in new pump and wheel motor.? Thanks

Good info! Hill mounting and keeping sub-20 mins overworking to prevent overheating was very useful! Have 1 related question: Stander X, 700 hrs - at max velocity, the mower banks a few degrees left. When the right (overpowered side) forward control is abruptly released a few cm, there is a low whine. Symptom is isolated to the right side. Checking/lubricating linkages as a first course of action, but suspect internal issue. Dealer has yet to identify issue, may be due to its appearance when temperature is higher, but I'm unsure. Recommendations? Regards
@WrightMowers
@WrightMowers 6 жыл бұрын
There are two types of issues to look for--a whine and a ratcheting noise. A whine (also often heard when cold starting) is often from a tiny pin hole leak on suction hose between the pumps and the filter--it could even be a leaky filter gasket. Ratcheting noise can come from the suction on slowing down abruptly causing the pistons in the pump to "float" or the check valve in the nose of the motor chattering. Most all mowers can do it, especially when stopping on asphalt where you get lots of traction and reversing pressure. I would not be highly concerned about it as long as it doesn't a lot worse or you start loosing power. If you are nearing 700hrs you may want to go ahead and change the hydro oil (Mobile 1 15w-50)--you only have to replace the oil in the tank, no need to purge the pumps and motors. -Ed

Why not use anti wear hydraulic over motor oil. I know it’s recommended,but I’ve been told the formula for engines in motor oil is not primarily for protection,but for keeping the engine clean during combustion.hydraulic on the other hand is formulated for anti wear.would really appreciate your knowledge on this subject,seemingly considering to do the change.thanks

About to tear apart a wheel motor hoping to see something obvious...what could cause the left side to have no real power only barely moves forward but after it's put in neutral the left side still goes forward just as weakly as if it were in drive no reverse working on left still while the right wheel acts normally the whole time.

Very good video. Two questions: I'm curious how the power is controlled to the drive wheels of a zeroturn mower. I assume there is a lever on either the wheel motors, or on the right and left pumps, that controls the flow of fluid to the wheel motors. I assume that the control arms are connected to those levers. Are the levers on the wheel motors or the pumps? If one side of my mower gets just a little more power than the other when I move both control arms forward, does that mean I need to adjust the linkage between the control arms and the lever that I spoke of above?
@WrightMowers
@WrightMowers 7 жыл бұрын
Poco, Start by going to 2min 20 seconds. You will see how the cradle pivots causing the pistons to go "uphill" or "down hill" to control forwards and backwards. You likely have one of several issues, if you have a linkage adjust it to make that side go faster. You could also have one side beginning to fail... Best wishes, Ed

I have a Wright Sport X. The bypass on the right-side hydraulic pump (nut with short lever which allows the unit to be towed when opened) cannot be opened or shut. I've tried Blaster, WD-40, and a heat gun. Got it to rotate open sufficiently to tow mower to shop but can't close the bypass accurately to where it matches the left side pump. I have 2013 Stander X that I just purchased with 600 hours on it. It is very clean and appears to be well maintained. The previous owner said the hydo oil and filter were just changed over the winter. It has a slight chatter or stutter on only the right side when accelerating that wheel motor. I did not notice it when I first tested the mower but it is noticeable now that i'm comfortable with the mower. Left side is totally smooth. It has me think that it has to be the motor. I plan on ordering an OEM replacement and installing. Any thoughts that it would likely be something different failing?

Would it be worth it to replace worn bearings? In my case The bearings on the shaft have gone bad, some are missing (there’s only 8 that remain) and some look to be shredded the others that remain have some bad wear marks on them. It had a good bit of play in the shaft and when I removed it and the bald bearings fell out when the shaft was removed.

what hydro gear pump is in this video?

+Tim Broughton There were actually two pumps shown. The cutaway one was a 10cc pump from something like a Small frame Stander from a few years ago. The one with the fan that was disassembled is a 12cc pump that's used on the Stander X. Thanks for watching.

Hi Ed, i have ZT3100 hydro gear drives on my brand new mower. It seems that the oil level in both reservoirs keep dropping slowly but surely. I do keep finding a very small amount of oil collecting around the dish part of both wheel rims. What are you thoughts on this, could it be a drive shaft seals for the hydro gears or is this normal? Cheers.

Hi Dean, yes, it sounds like a leaking axle seal. -Ed

Can I use Mobil 1 sae 15w50 synthet oil also for a Hydro lesco walk behind mower

+bocardo Generally we can't recommend service for other mowers but in this case it has a very similar system to our mowers and our experience is that Mobil 1 15w50 would be one of the best oils for your system.

@@WrightMowers HaHaHa! ....I remember my Mercruser dealer told me to only use the Mercruiser brand oil filters. He said they were "better". One day, looking at the mercuiser filter in bright sunlight, I could clearly see it was a Fram filter painted over with black paint. Then I found out that virtually all filters come out of the same plant. Only the color and prices for the filters are different.

What could cause a leak at the bypass valve on the pump? I have an identical pump that is leaking at the threads. Inspection revealed 2 o-rings at the base. Would ring failure be the only cause of a leak at the threads, or could something else initiate that?
@WrightMowers
@WrightMowers 7 жыл бұрын
It could be those o-rings. I'm not one 100% why it might be leaking but I do know that if for any reason the system was overheated it can cause some of the rubber parts to not flex as much and seal as well as they should.
